What is the meaning of the term Franchise Player when it comes to sports?
Franchise Player is a term mostly used in North America and it is attributed to a player who has plenty of skill and in addition possesses qualities around which a business can be built. He/she becomes the face of the sports team, which is important when it comes to signing endorsement deals, media dealings and sporting trade in general. The Franchise Player is not necessarily the best player on the team, but he/she surely is paid like one.
It's almost as if Tampa Bay still considers Stamkos the face of the team.

i understand what ur saying but 9/10 the best players is the franchise player
well stamkos is the face of the franchise because he is the captain as well and has been for so long,
Usually franchise player just means ta playyer of a certain calibre a team can build around but is some cases, teams can have more than one franchise player so i don't know what the big fuss is about?? Some teams simply don't have franchise players. They just have really good players.
