If big Buff retires I think the wise move is too take a step back this year

Description
I think any move now would be a desperation move and would be an overpay as a result. Wait for waivers. Wait for other teams to get desperate for cap space. Hope a player like Pionk or Niku takes the role and runs with it. At minimum wait till the TDL where the costs will be much less and you 'll have a better idea of what to expect for the team.

There's no two ways about it, that defense will be eaten alive in the playoffs and trying to force a trade now would just be sacrificing more futures for a dman who alone still won't make this core capable of winning a cup anyway so why fake it.

The core of this team is locked up long term, assuming they now sign Laine and Connor. Sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward. This year seems to be the one they have no choice on. They have some D prospects on the way, might as well give them the chance to develop and that will help the team long term.

I agree to a point. This is if the other teams try to screw the Jets on a trade. If its a fair trade, then I'm all for it.

As much as someone like Faulk isnt a great replacement, he is on the trade block so I can see that happening...or something along those lines...

Maybe they swing a trade for Honka or DeAngelo's rights, but yeah I think anything bigger than that would be a massive mistake

It’s at least promising that all of our good prospects are on defence. Top tier would be heinola samberg, Stanley
Are all guys who could help cover the blow at least

I think you're right but I would go a step further and trade Wheeler. I know he is a leader and everything but maximizing his trade value now while almost guaranteeing Winnipeg gets a good top draft pick could have them doing a on the fly rebuild really quickly

The cost for Faulk was apparently Kase and pick..... Do you honestly think Faulk will cost the Jets Kulikov and a 1st? GM's jobs are to maximize return while minimizing expense. WPG are the desperate team here and every Gm knows that now. Alll Chevy can do is be smart and not give in to it. Once everything dies down, he'll be able to potentially make a move but it'll be way later into the season when other teams become just as desperate as the Jets are.

Yeah that's all good and dandy but he has a NMC and is the captain of the team. That would be a massive PR disaster. Plus the core are all signed for minimum 5 years (assuming Connor and Laine are signed now). That is plenty of time for prospects to come in and for WPG to hopefully sign a UFA next year.

I had expressed the same sentiment a while back. I look at the Jets and they have some serious holes and some bad contracts that will hurt them and shorten or close their window entirely. Buff and Wheeler are on the wrong side of 30 and Little is a 3C at best and is also on the wrong side of 30. All 3 should be moved and replaced with futures. Get some cap relief, and pieces that should be ready to contribute in 2 years and this team will be a force again when Schiefele is still in his 20's.

Otherwise, Wheeler will start to decline and he'll be unmoveable, Little is already almost unmoveable. Buff retiring could be a good thing. I think Chevy is way too loyal for his own good though and would sooner move Laine than Wheeler which is pretty dumb.

Understand its a PR disaster now but if they end up losing all season anyways and Wheelers play dips then its going to be all the conversation anyway, we both know the media will be the first ones to hop on the 'why are we paying a 33 year old winger $8.7 million?" train

Like I said, he has a NMC and makes 8.7M. The odds that a team is on his list and has the cap to take on a 33 year old making 8.7M is pretty much nil.

For the same reason you want to maximize trading Wheeler now, is the same reason why many teams wouldn't be interested in paying the price WPG would want for trading their captain and back to back 90+ point player....

Trading a player like that is hard.

I agree its way too long but in all honesty, 5M bucks a season for a UFA aged player putting up 40-50 points isn't all that bad. Its only bad when he eventually falls off a cliff in the last couple years of that contract more than likely. For the time being, there are far worse contracts in the league.
