Lumbus Savard TDL
I'm with <a href="/users/Kylonetic8" target="_blank">@Kylonetic8</a> here; with how well the Caps are playing this year, they have the luxury of not having to overpay in a trade and thus probably wouldn't pull the trigger on this deal as constructed currently. Love the idea of Savard in DC, he'd be a really great get if GMBM could swing it

changes
A 5 game sample isn't nearly big enough to justify such drastic changes as the ones you've suggested here, calm down and give it another 5-15 games before blowing it up. At 5v5, the Caps are rocking a 96.8 PDO, 54.85 CF%, and 42.11 GF% against 53.47 xGF%. Instead of their usual trend of outperforming expected goals and having a high PDO, which has been a common criticism used against them in past years, they've been drastically underperforming offensively and in net. This is a team that has shot at least 8% 5v5 every year since Oates got fired, including a league best 10% last year, so I don't believe for a second that they're gonna shoot around 7% on the season just because that's what they've done in the first 5 games, just like I don't think McDavid and Draisaitl's scrappy band of AHLers is gonna keep up their 13% shooting percentage for a full season and go 82-0-0.
TL;DR: listen to <a href="/users/ClockReads2113" target="_blank">@ClockReads2113</a> and just be patient

Name on defenseman who will be better than Dahlin in 2021-22
Dahlin will probably end up scoring a bunch more points and goals, but Heiskanen is a far better defender so I'd take him over Dahlin

That's what the Caps are paying him but there's retained salary, his AAV is 3.35M so he'd probably be looking for a raise based on that figure

You know that of those middle 6 players, only Nyquist, Bemstrom, and Wennberg are from Sweden, right? Eller and Bjorkstrand are Danish and Baertschi is Swiss, so not really much of a swedish speaking middle 6, as you put it

Ah, I was only considering average active roster size, i.e. just the days in the NHL column. Cap hit still counts on IR, but a roster spot opens up for a replacement, so using just NHL days to determine roster size shows you which teams called up replacements or extras after the deadline and which ones just subbed in their scratches to deal with injuries. Plus if you were to use NHL + IR to figure VGK's average roster size from 2018, you get an absurdly high number because Stoner, Grabovski, and Clarkson all were on normal IR that season, even though they were never active at any time that season.
Going by just NHL days, Caps had 22.39, 21.98, 22.63, and 23.01 average active NHL players on their rosters in 15-16, 16-17, 17-18, and 18-19, respectively.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Yojimbo</b></div><div>But the Caps will not go through the season with a 22 man cap roster. IR still counts against the cap, so if anyone in injured for less than 10 games/24 days both them and their replacement count. last year the Caps averaged 23.2 on the roster, the year before 22.9, 15-16 was 23.2, etc etc etc. And the Caps have been quite lucky in the injury department (compared to other teams). 22 works on paper, and on Playstation, but not in the NHL.</div></div>
Where are you getting those average roster size figures?

I was assuming 4 days since the Caps schedule is @STL 10/2, @NYI 10/4, and VS. CAR on 10/5, so from the 2nd to the 5th making 4 days the suspension length, but hell if it's 5 days that's even better

young mans game
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Of course you're mostly right. Risto's a career -143, and he would be a really big project. A change of scenes and a new coach who plays him in a bottom four role couldn't possibly make him any worse, though.</div></div>
Say you desperately need to sell a house in the next week or two, and the backyard needs improvement. It'd be a sensible idea to simply mow and weed the lawn and make it look nice, but you'd be certifiably insane if you instead decided to suddenly start digging a hole for an inground pool with your own bare hands, right? Sure, it might be worth exploring if you had room to royally screw up (which is the most likely outcome), but there's simply no way to justify the risk involved in such a, uh, let's say bold undertaking when time is of the essence.
Remember, the big trades don't necessarily do the most for a team. Caps gave STL a bunch of stuff for Shattenkirk, and that ultimately failed. Caps gave CHI a 3rd round pick, and all they got was a previously unknown defenseman and a Stanley Cup.

young mans game
No matter how bad the back half of Oshie's contract ends up being, I'd rather play him 20 minutes a night for the remainder of his deal than let Ristolainen play a second in a Caps sweater. Risto is hands down one of the worst defensemen in the league who is consistently given top pairing minutes while never once justifying that billing in any one of his six (6!!!!) seasons of NHL hockey. Chandler Stephenson is actually a pretty good analogue for Risto at this point; both are guys who have never proven their worth at 5v5 despite being given every chance to do so, and both are only good at one area of special teams (Risto PP and Stevie PK).
Bottom line: Oshie <em>might</em> be bad in a few years, but Ristolainen has only ever been bad, and trading one for the other would be an unprecedented show of insanity on the part of GMBM.

I didn't say it'd make sense for the Stars lol, just trying to show how ridiculous the return would have to be for trading Oshie this year to make sense to the Caps (just as it would take a ridiculous return for Radulov to get moved while the Stars are a contending team)

Barrie gets the Spurgeon deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>My idea is that Nylander should have been signed for $7MM (his actual deal is $7.5MM) sooner; even though that results in a (minimally) higher cap hit for him over the last 5 years of his contract, it still would have been a more reasonable figure and led to a lower figure for Marner. My point is that Dubas got rolled not just by Marner and his gang but by Nylander and his entourage, too.</div></div>
Ah, I see what you're saying about Willy's money now. I still think that Dubas would've gotten a world of **** from Marner's camp regardless of what Nylander signed for, as all the rhetoric from Paul and his agent was about getting "Matthews Money" as soon as 34 got his extension, and it was never really about trying to make X amount more than Nylander makes. The best play would've been to sign him before John Tavares handed him a career year on a silver platter, but I don't think that was ever really an option. Dubas has made really good trades and free agent signings so far, but I think RFA negotiation is his Achilles heel.

Barrie gets the Spurgeon deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Once again we see the adverse effect of overpaying Marner and Nylander. If those two worthies had been inked at a more reasonable $9MM and $7MM, there would be room for two more entry-level contracts and Toronto would have a 23-man roster even paying Barrie $7.5MM. Pay Muzzin $5.5MM instead and there is room for <strong>FOUR</strong> ELC's.</div></div>
Sound logic there and I agree that Marner's deal should've been much cheaper, but not sure what you mean about Nylander? His cap hit last year was 10.277M because he signed late, but for the next 6 years he's making 6.962M

Spurgeon is actually worth that money though (term is scary tho), Barrie is wildly overrated. Invest in Muzzin on a shorter term deal instead, he's a little older than Barrie but is a far better defender.
