Would look really bad if Dubas had two major holdouts in his first two years. Wheres the stall in talks? Money or term?

Leafs offered 8x10 and mitch said no. He countered with 3x10 and Dubas said no

How is he not? He is a centre so that is worth more than a winger

He is a better goal scorer so that is worth more

Marner was a 69 point player before he got a super star center. Tavares is a top 5 c in the game. Aho on the other line is the only star on his line (only forward star in his organization).

Aho is worth more

3 years should be 7.5 million. Not over 10

Is that from Burke? He has zero connections or any clue what's going on in hockey anymore. It's speculation and not an actual report.

Yup, a 20 year old 69point player...do you have any idea what player development is?

Yes I do know what player development is. But we are comparing directly to Aho

And why is that ridiculous?

The largest contract ever signed by an RFA winger off ELC in this CBA is Tarasenko's 7.5 million for 8 years. With cap inflation it's worth about 8.7 million for 8 years.

Tarasenko was also a goal scorer and most importantly tarasenko was the only superstar on his line. He didn't have Tavares. Now I suspect you'll point out that tarasenko has about 77 points in his contract year to Marner's 94 points. But scoring is way up. He was actually higher ranked in scoring that year (I believe 8th to Marner's 11th). The highest scorer that year had about 88 pts this year had 124 points.

There is NO PRECEDENCE for a winger of ELC to get anywhere near the 10 and 11 million dollar contracts being discussed.

Aho as above should be the ceiling.

2 years 7.5 million
3 years 8 million (my mistake above)
4 years 7.5 million (worst term for the Leafs/best for marner, walks him to UFA)
5 years 8.5 (what aho got)
6 years 9 million
7 years 9.5 million
8 years 10 million

Um.... Yeah he is. As a top line centre who has only missed two games in the last three years, and puts up 80+ points at an AAV of 8.45 for a term of five years, he most definitely is more valuable. Perhaps it is you that needs to wake up?

Of course it's too much....but he WILL get too much no matter what. The thing nobody is talking about is that Matthews' deal is what messed everything up. He's making way too much, especially to walk into UFA status so soon.

I know folks like to blame the GMs or teams, but Marner is not a holdout. Marner is free to sign with any team in the NHL, for any team, in any league in the world. So while it's on the Leafs somewhat to sign Marner, it's up to Marner to find a team to sign him. What looked bad on Dubas last year, wasn't that Nylander wasn't signed in August, it's Dubas overpaid Nylander in November.

Pisses me off that the speculation is that the other RFAs are waiting on Marner when Aho and Meier should have set the bar already.

It was only an overpayment because Nylander didn't produce. I think he will be closer to earning that number this year and beyond. Also, according to reports, they were only about $300k - $500k apart which is not that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. Dubas would have been **** on more if he didn't sign Nylander for a measley $300k.

By all comparables, Nylander was overpaid by per year by 500,000. So be it, I know it's subjective. Leafs were on 120 point pace without Nylander. The Leafs were much worse with him. Long term the Leafs may have set their own precedent....we will give in and overpay our RFAs. Happened with Nylander and then Matthews (yeah I know it's subjective). Overpaying your players can't continue in a cap league. And now Marner will fee cheated if he doesn't get overpaid too.
It's like when my older brother turned 16, he got a Mustang given to him by parents. My next oldest brother got a Camaro at 16. Then I got a Dodge Dart (just the slant six). Should have been delighted, hardly any guys my age had their own car , but somehow I felt cheated that I didn't get a muscle car. Guess my parents got smart. No 16 year old needs a sports car.
