Montreal Canadiens
Philip Danault
Andrew Shaw
Alexander Romanov

Chicago Blackhawks
Alex DeBrincat
Chad Krys
Two months of Fleischmann/Weise

It balances out a little more. But still, CHI gets the best player ultimately.

Definitely Chicago. I'm a Habs fan and if we got DeBrincat, that would be amazing but we got Shaw instead, so the trade was pretty much Shaw for DeBrincat

While it's a clear loss for Montreal, we got Mysak + Part of the Allen trade + 2023 3rd round pick and 2 serviceable years of Shaw.

Montreal still benefited from the trade.

It's interesting to look back at a trade a few years later and see who the draft picks turned out to be, but I don't think you can judge a trade for draft picks by how good the players who were drafted became. Montreal didn't trade Alex Debrincat and Chad Krys for Andrew Shaw. They traded two second-round picks. One of them turned into a star for Chicago thanks to a combination of luck, good scouting, and the right environment for his development. The trade was made before the draft started, so nobody knew if Debrincat would even be available then, and if Montreal had kept the pick, maybe they would have taken somebody else and Chicago still would have got Debrincat with the other 2nd-round pick they owned.

Not likely we would have drafted DeBrincat anyway, and if we did, perhaps we don't take Caufield.
It's one thing to look back at a player you traded away, but quite another with a pick. There are too many "what ifs" involving selecting a player over trading for one.
You have to know that player is going to be available in that spot, have him scouted and targeted above dozens of others, and it has to either be the best player available on the board, or at least a position of need.

Shaw was a solid enough pickup at the time *though more was hoped for). We also recouped a lot of value when we eventually sent him back to Chicago.
Not bad when you can get 3 years out of a player for two 2nds and return him in used condition for a 2nd and a 3rd.

What I meant here was that in the 2016 draft in the 2nd round, there were 2 players that became at least very solid NHL players and Chicago happened to have received 1 of them. This wasn't a "Haha, CHI fleeced the Habs" but more of a "Montreal just got seriously unlucky here"

I don't consider it unlucky. You know there's a risk when you trade away picks that they will become good players for another team. You simply can't worry about it or you'd never trade them and make it difficult to improve your team now.

My point was : if CHI picked Cameron Morrison (the pick after DeBrincat) then this is a nothing trade. But, the one second round pick that MTL doesn't have in the past how many years turns out to be DeBrincat, that's just unlucky in my eyes.

Obviously, to get better you have to take risks (Using the Leafs whom I'm most familiar with: Dubas going all in this year with McCabe, ROR, Acciari, Lafferty, Gus and Schenn isn't coming with risks. What if that 2023 1st becomes the next Mcdavid? McKinnon, Matthews, Crosby, Gretzky? Or Ottawa's drafting history includes a lot of risks. Heck, even Caufield was a huge risk.
