I am a Habs fan, and like everyone in the world of hockey, I realize there is no chance the Hurricanes don't match - and after a good 6.9 days.
I think Bergevin won't just create haters around the other GMs. Some of them may try to offer sheet other players.
Some lingering RFA agent negotiations might be more pressed. It might change a bit the landscape.

But I agree with you, the offer sheet was too low.

There is 99% chance the Canes will match.

I'm not putting it at 100%, because MAYBE (1%, you gotta give that 1%), there is a tiny chance that business owner Geoff Molson knows something about Tom Dundon's cash flow that we don't know. That's the only reason.

It's a low cap hit, but 21 million up front isn't easy to come up with for most owners. It was a very calculated offersheet that might just pay off.

    That's what everyone agrees on.
It's got NOTHING to do with the AAV.

It's ALL about 21 million right there.
ALSO, if there is a lockout in 2 years, the signing bonuses need to be paid in full regardless.

It's till 99% certain they match. But it's not 100%.

I'm not nearly as certain. CAR really put themselves in a bad situation. Take care of your RFAs.

No chance. This stinks of an owner pushing something he has no clue about. Teams will always find the money to pay

Carolina will match, it doesn't matter about the upfront bonuses, it's just more of an annoyance. Philly tried to do this with Shea Weber and Nashville 7 yrs ago, with all of the bonus upfront. Nashville matched, so will Carolina. This is perfect for Aho in 5 years he will be UFA and only 26 and will get a big close to max contract then

He signed the offer sheet and unless carolina is willing to spend over 21 million in his first contract year (out of five, thanks to bonuses) then its official. And the habs will have to send some picks.

You really think 21 millions is not that bigger deal for a team the reach the eastern conference and made a profit of 22 millions( first time in a few years that they made money just too notice). The market of carolina isnt that great, the 12 millions bonus and 9,53millions next july 1st is big money! Everybody think oh yes they will match that easy but 21 millions is a lot of money for a team that havent made a profit in years

obviously not or you'd realize Dundon only took CAR after his Expansion bid for Houston fell.
wanting to crack Houston market for a while Bettman tried pushing him towards buying CAR.
Dundon only agreed after league said they'd talk relocation in 5 seasons if things havent improved.

Dundon got rich by making unpopular decisions like telling CAR management to not only move Skinner but Hanafin and Lindholm .
ALL CAR fans last year in any trade you'd do for Hanafin and Lindholm were just as arrogant as they are about Aho .
the truth is CAR fans arent in a hockey market , they dont understand how **** works
they just know big names they know and blindly insist they arent leaving .
the reality is Dundon dwindled CAR down to a team who's top player makes 6m with 4-5 stars making close to that.
i doubt he pays Aho 8.5 a year based on that even before the 21m bonus .

if CAR fans get mad , the Houston local doesnt give a **** after all that helps his relocation cause .
i expect Dundon takes the picks and hopes this helps kill the Bunch of Jerks movement that might interfere
with Relocation of his Houston Hurricane's . (after all Lindholm was just as over as Aho and 23 when traded and went on to score 78 points after being given away to CGY in abundle that didnt help CAR as much as it hurt them )

This is ridiculous man, even if this were true he would take Aho and trade him next year for double the value.
This whole thing is a PR thing for the Habs to their fans. They couldnt sign the top centre again and resorted to this. If they really wanted him they would have went to 10.5 or higher.
The only reason someone would buy this is if you are a massive has fan

A 1st round pick, those hold a lot of value. You could make that argument about every cap dump ever if you really want, that's a much smaller price to pay.

    that's assuming to much

from a business stand point you risk him getting hurt , having an off year or splitting the locker room while being stuck with 21m dollar expense. is that worth the player they might get extra in a trade?

for a Owner who only bought the team once NHL agreed to future relocation talks , i highly doubt it .
but he could . . . how ever most rich people dont get that way by making 21m dollar short term gambles .
they get rich by playing the long game and taking those picks to build a youth core .

if he blocks the deal CAR ends up with three 1st's , two 2nd's ,four 3rd's one of which is a conditional 2nd if Fox doesnt play 30 NHL games.
this puts them in a position to trade up for more talent long term , talent that will be ready just in time for Houston Hurricane's season debut

the issue is CAR fans dont know hockey or business .
they didnt get it last year when Dundon cleaned out the cupboards
they wont get it this year when he passes on 21 and a contract that takes him to UFA
not after Aho signed and declared he wanted to go to the only other team with as many Finnish Prospects.
Like Kotkanemi,Armia ,and Lehkonen he probably grew up watching Koivu in MTL because him agreeing to 8.5m
is what all you guys are ignoring , like you said he coulda got 10+ there was 2 other teams in play besides CAR
    he chose MTL

only after dumping Darling did he make the move though
he saved money then used about the same he saved to get a 1st.
its just a shell game , no out of pocket expense as they also got a Starter out of it in Reimer.

and again incase you missed the point , they didnt have to go to 10m
Aho was good at 8.5m choosing to sign here even though 2 other teams and CAR we're in on him.
he coulda waited and got more , Aho chose not to .

so what scenario's do players commonly take less money to play with a new team ?
think about it before you respond .

    that's assuming to much

from a business stand point you risk him getting hurt , having an off year or splitting the locker room while being stuck with 21m dollar expense. is that worth the player they might get extra in a trade?

for a Owner who only bought the team once NHL agreed to future relocation talks , i highly doubt it .
but he could . . . how ever most rich people dont get that way by making 21m dollar short term gambles .
they get rich by playing the long game and taking those picks to build a youth core .

if he blocks the deal CAR ends up with three 1st's , two 2nd's ,four 3rd's one of which is a conditional 2nd if Fox doesnt play 30 NHL games.
this puts them in a position to trade up for more talent long term , talent that will be ready just in time for Houston Hurricane's season debut

the issue is CAR fans dont know hockey or business .
they didnt get it last year when Dundon cleaned out the cupboards
they wont get it this year when he passes on 21 and a contract that takes him to UFA
not after Aho signed and declared he wanted to go to the only other team with as many Finnish Prospects.
Like Kotkanemi,Armia ,and Lehkonen he probably grew up watching Koivu in MTL because him agreeing to 8.5m
is what all you guys are ignoring , like you said he coulda got 10+ there was 2 other teams in play besides CAR
    he chose MTL

Lol seeing fans like you sucked into this thinking will make it that much more enjoyable when they match. This is a pipe dream at best
