Well first thing first, playoffs mean revenue for the owner which is a big deal. Secondly, journalists always have an agenda. By them causing speculation and pressure, they create news stories. Keeping themselves relevant. Its especially so here in Montreal because we only really have Hockey. Impact is still pretty small, Alouettes suck, no baseball....yet, etc So the big talk of the town in the Habs and if you are a journalist with a lot of pull, you can stoke the fire and get plenty of things to talk about. When was the last time a journalist said "All the Habs have to do is play it safe, rebuild for 3 years and slowly develop players".........
I will say this though, this idea of 1st round exits yada yada yada isn't always true (Sorry leafs fans). So many teams nowadays catch fire and go well into the playoffs when they had virtually no expectation. Finishing 1st or 8th in the conference means jack squat lately in the NHL. Its all about synergy and getting hot at the right time. So the goal has become to simply make the playoffs and hope your team catches fire at that time.
So if you have a couple big name players on your team and a decent amount of depth, going for it isn't a bad idea. Unless your Columbus who basically sold their entire draft pick pool on a hunch they could win. Spectacular if it worked, terrible when it doesn't.
