Pretty sure that Marleau has told media that the only other place he will play is San Jose. Also not sure replacing one old guy with an even older guy is the solution

My understanding is that he said West Coast, and didn't mean Vancouver.

We aren't replacing one old guy with an older guy. We're acquiring a RhD and a third-round pick for a meaningless cap hit because we only pay $1M of his salary.

Like the trade, seems to make sense for both clubs to me.

Off-topic: any new favorite picks for Anaheim at #9? I've seen Krebs mocked there a lot among national media

Since when do teams take one cap dump as the reason for taking another cap dump.

The ask on Marleau as been a young forward. The TOR GM has said as much and that the cost was "too high" currently. I highly doubt the price has gone down, especially as the cap amount is being reported as lower than the 83 million projected.

My favorite is still Trevor Zegras, with second choice Victor Soderstrom. I just can't see them taking one of the wingers (Boldy, Caufield, Kaliyev) but maybe Podkolzin.

For Anaheim, Zaitsev isn't a cap dump -- he's an essential RD addition. Sherwood is a very promising RW who is buried on the depth chart even after Perry's buyout.

I'm really skeptical Zegras will fall that far. Honestly I'd see justification in taking him 3rd-5th overall, he's that talented. But alas you never know with these drafts. Zegras at 9 would be an absolute steal.

A C or a D makes a ton of sense. Soderstrom would be solid, Anaheim loves their European defenseman.

yeah, Zaitsev is a cap dump for ANA. Lets not pretend there is value there.

Agreed. Cap dump+cap dump+3rd would be a pretty dumb move on Anaheim's part. You're taking on $10.5ish mil in cap and doing the Leafs a huge favor when they're already in a tight spot.

Acquiring Zaitsev makes sense, but there had better be an asset included to take some of the heat off of that $21 mil that he's still owed.

Kypreos said that and his level of "Insider" is basically making up rumours to look cool. He just speculates and makes stuff up to get fans riled up.

Totally, its a product of the age we live in. Everyone blows everything out of proportion all the time. Society thinks with its emotions too much.

As a guy who has been a loyal Jays fan (And Raps, god love 'em) forever, if I'm ever having a bad day, I just scroll through the Jays facebook comments and think "At least you're not one of these people..."

Love to see arenas and stadiums packed (Going the other way for the Jays right now unfortunately), and love that the fan bases are growing, but holy moly the amount of hot-takes on a daily basis is painful.

The Ducks are my one salvation, since there's about 3 of us that are fans in Atlantic Canada total.

I'm not pretending. That's my contention. The only pretending being done is your pretense that Korbinian Holzer, Andy Welinski and Jake Dotchin are NHL level and Nikita Zaitsev isn't. Because that's the inevitable logic of your position.

"Acquiring Zaitsev makes sense" precisely because he isn't a cap dump. You have refuted your own argument. He's a perfectly good 3rd-pairing d-man on a long-term contract that the Ducks can afford, and is an absolute requirement this season given the dire weakness of their right-side defense.

Now when you "got Myers" ( or Stralman ) how about this one :

a 4.5 million 3rd pairing D man. Brilliant. And you keep arguing as if that makes any sense.
The only time you are getting that in a 3rd pairing Dman is if he brings something else to the table, and even then most people will tell you, it's a bad contract.

"Acquiring Zaitsev makes sense" but there had better be an asset attached. Cherry picking comments is over-rated. If we change *precisely because he isn't a cap dump* to *precisely because he IS a cap dump*, then all of the sudden you've refuted your own argument. See how full sentences matter, and if we change things to our own benefit it's easier to make a counter-argument?

You're right, Anaheim can afford Zaitsev. Anaheim can also afford multiple other cheaper options. Paying $4.5 mil/year to a 3rd pairing dman (as you said he is) is a bit foolish though, especially with the term attached. Just because a team can afford a player today, doesn't make it a smart move for the following season(s). See: Zaitsev in Toronto. Team could afford him, then all of the sudden they couldn't. Why not use the $10.5ish mil in cap space to acquire any number of equally capable 3rd pairing dmen.

You've turned a team that has freed some seriously needed cap space into a team that's back into cap hell, and haven't improved it.

It's only a good, affordable contract if you're Toronto, who have to trade him away because they can't afford him. Kinda ironic...
