Description
You'd really think the Isles would have made a move for a Top 6 forward when this is your Top 6. And you'd REALLY think the Isles would have made a move for a Top 6 forward when so many Top 6 forwards went for relatively little. Marcus Johansson for a 2nd and 4th. Wayne Simmonds for a middle 6 forward and a conditional 4th. Stone for a 2nd, a blue chip prospect and a middle 6 forward. Kevin Hayes for a draft protected 1st, a conditional 4th and a bottom 6 forward. Gustav Nyquist for a 2nd and 3rd.

It seems to me like the price was NOT too high for Top 6 forwards. I'm sorry, I really don't get why we didn't make a move, because not only did we need one, but apparently the market price for what we needed was in my opinion very, very low.

And no, I don't buy that Lou stood still because he was confident he could get Panarin/Duchene/Stone/whoever in Free Agency this summer. Because Free Agents want to sign with "win now" teams. If Columbus goes far in the playoffs, you can bet that Panarin and Duchene will take discounts to stay. Stone just got traded to Vegas. Why would he leave such a successful franchise for the Isles? We're having a great regular season, don't get me wrong, but we should consider ourselves a peripheral team until we get hardware or at the very least a 2nd round playoff win. And there's no way we make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs with this offense.

Possible that management is aware that the Isles are riding a PDO bender, similar to how Vegas was last year, and decided to keep assets and keep building the team from within?

Time to spend for this team is in the off-season. Try to get Panarin in the door, maybe Nyquist as well. If you're at the top of the Metro with this group right now, you'll be okay. Once you get in the playoffs, anything can happen.

maybe? name the last time a team made a huge deadline acquisition and won the cup..... not a 3rd pairing/ bottom 6 guy. I 1000% agree with you......they know the future is bright. no need to take steps backwards

....also highly doubt Panarin/duchene are taking any discount. If one does it's duchene. Panarin is going to a big city for high AAV.

I believe Lou Lam just didn't find anything worth trading for and breaking up a young core that he's cultivating. Islanders also getting Laad and Hickey back who they haven't had in a while is a boost. Also apparently they were seriously in on Stone but were not willing to go as high as Vegas did in terms of AAV in the contract extensions.

Fair enough. And to be clear, I don't think this team is long-term doomed because of our inaction today, I just think we missed a ton of good opportunities to get our team some hardware this year. You NEED hardware if you want to sign big time UFAs, which I think is the plan in July. And I really don't see any good talent falling all the way to the late 1st round to warrant keeping that 1st rounder.

We've all heard that Panarin wants to live in a big city, but every NHL player wants the same thing: they want to win. UFAs go to teams that just had successful postseasons. So if you want to sign Panarin/Stone/Duchene/whoever, you have to make sure you go far in the playoffs. If that means losing a few picks to shore up the Top 6, you do it.

The only team that seemed to pay a premium was Columbus, for Duchene & Dzingel. All others held firm.
A sign of desperation from Jarmo thanks in part to Bread and Bob.
If you want to see how this all came about, please refer back to my original post on their situation, about a month ago (January 26th), titled I SAW THIS IN A MOVIE...

Last team to make a huge deadline acquisition and won the cup I'd argue would be the LA Kings in 2012. Traded for Jeff Carter

Can’t argue that. So 1 in 6 years. Not the best odds imo

if you think Josh Brook is equal to Branstrom you're on crack. Brannstrom is waaaay more talented and a better open ice skater
