Giving MTL A French-Canadian and a Finn

Transactions
PIT
  1. Danault, Phillip
  2. Shaw, Andrew
Détails additionnels:
It's easy to look at Shaw and scoff. However, his possession metrics are great. He produces with the limited ice time. And he can also fill in at center when necessary (or replace Sheahan next season). He also seems to be a great locker room guy and fan favorite. So why not?
MTL
  1. Brassard, Derick
  2. Määttä, Olli
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2019 (PIT)
Détails additionnels:
The second is due to Danault's very cheap contract with term.

Pens are gonna be in salary cap hell, we don’t need to be paying a 4th liner 4 mil. Take out Määttä and Shaw and I’d do that trade. Rather have a defenseman than another depth forward, we should be adding defensemen rather than subtracting, we have good forward depth.

First off he brought that crap upon himself. Secondly I'm not saying he can't play in the league, I'm just suggesting that's not an indicator of a good locker room guy. More of a guy who has happened to be in winning locker rooms than being the cause of any positive atmosphere in there

I like the "fairness" of the trade, but can Pens live with that LHD for a Cup run?

Schultz will come back in February. Then the only defensive liability will be Johnson (if we keep him in sheltered minutes and scenarios it should be okay).

Shaw was a locker room and fan favorite in Chicago. Everyone loved him and he's doing pretty well in Montreal, I really don't think it makes sense for any team to trade for him because he's finally got line mates he has chemistry with in MTL and it's hard for role players especially to adjust to a new team. It took 2 seasons for Shaw to become productive in MTL.

Take your personal vendetta against him to someone else's thread. Multiple interviews from former and current teammates say he's a part of the winning culture of their teams and is a great locker room guy. He's also MTL's LGBTQ ambassador, so please take your invalid argument elsewhere.

No, he was the ambassador at the time when he mis-spoke as well. There is literally no reason for you to do this: go out of your way to defend a well-paid athlete for his inability to be a decent human being, no reason. Don't come at me with **** like a personal vendetta when I'm the one who's been talking about things outside of his person, unlike you.

Also this winning culture thing is entirely handsight bias and it shows time after time. First Washinton don't have it so they can't win - then they win and all of a sudden have it. Cleary there's a disparity between the concept "locker room / winning culture" and actually just winning games. This shows to be the case every time a player goes from a winning team to a losing or vice versa. People had Toews as the #1 center in the world because of his intangibles and winning mentality - except it all went away when they didn't win anymore. So to me at least it's clear that winning is the cause of this, either directly or through building "culture" through wins. Not the players themselves.

Oh I've done plenty, but I also understand that even if the players themselves are best at the sport it doesn't mean that they know what goes into being good at it or not

In fairness without bias, Pens are slightly overpaying here. Danault for Maatta is approx fair value. But Shaw for Brassard is a no show. As good as Shaw is playing and can be, he is role player. Brassard hasn't played well for the Pens but if you give him top line minutes here in MTL he'll blow Shaw out of the water. He is simply a better player. Everywhere else where he was relied on as a top performer, he has done an admiral job. CLB, NYR, OTT, etc

Frankly, it should be Montreal adding the 2nd round pick and I'd be ok with that. Replacing Danault with Brassard is fine which ever way you look at it for the Habs and moving a guy who is deployed as a winger in Shaw for a LHD like Maatta makes perfect sense from a Habs perspective as we are deep on the wing and weak at LHD. Don't know Pens depth and whatnot well enough to know if this makes sense for them or not.

Maatta-Danault is a trade I wouldn't be opposed but I'd do it next year. Montreal should add some pieces.

The only issue I have with Shaw is his cap hit. He'd be a near four million dollar fourth-line player.

Just thought trade was insane, maybe Maatta and Johnson for Danault and Shaw would be a lil closer but Brassard and a 2nd for another bad contract , just dont make much cap sense
