I was going to make the trade for tvr instead of pesce because I wanted people to focus on the contracts and not the trade.... then I thought well then all they are going to be focussed on is “wow look at that defense”.... so I went with this trade. Guess you can never win when you’re dealing with idiots....

I see what you're doing...but Sandin will be NHL ready sooner than Liljegren, despite shot-sided-ness.

Yup I agree, I also don’t see the leafs moving Kadri or paying M&M damn near 30m either.

Gaudreau is a good comparable but an older signing I think that of all players in the league marner reminds me the most of Johnny.

9.25% of the cap would be 7.7m and I would think that’s where the leafs start... if Rantanen were to get signed before him I would think the leafs would have an absolute upper limit. If Rantanen were to sign for let’s say 9m I think the leafs could easily get marner at 8.5m max.

I hear a lot of people saying kucherov but really his first ask before the bridge was 7.5m then after a 40 goal 85 point season and then a 39 goal 100 point season he got the 9.5m deal. Marner is putting up assists at a much higher rate this season but is still scoring goals at the same pace.

I think the best answer is that there really aren’t a lot of great examples.

I think he falls somewhere between gaudreau and kucherov, maybe around draisaitl type money.

Sky's the limit 4 Matthews, but Marner is over payed at $9$10$11$12 mill, 4get over $13.
Marner is a younger Kessel, 3 times more assists than goals.
Easy on Matthews line.

Some reports suggest, mostly due to offer sheet threats.
leaves would be better to take 4 1st rounds for Marne, focus on Matthews, Nylander & Kapanin.
Plus trade Gardiner&teplace him somehow.

Gaudreau makes a lot of sense as well as being more current than pass first guys like Wheeler and Giroux.
Kucherov and Rantanen can only be mentioned with beer goggles on.

Term is a big factor as well as quality of linemate. Marner struggled last year with Bozak and JVR, as did Matthews with Hyman and Brown. They are fortunate to be put in positions this year that really max their production and many forget that. It's easy to look at the numbers and expect them to swing for the fence but the question has to be asked if they could replicate their successes elsewhere?

In the hotbed of hockey, the media has to create stories where there are none. If there was ever a player that would have considered signing an offer sheet, they just signed him and he had an extra 2 months for other teams to kick tires.

Bingo! And despite the jokes re dumb jocks, hockey players aren't stupid.. they know when they're being set up for success and when they're not. As much as players want to get paid, they equally want to realize their potential. And in a team sport like hockey one needs good teammates to realize that. Hockey players know this, and it would take alot for me to believe they don't take that into consideration when contemplating their contracts. Jt coming to Toronto confirms this for me

? Kessel's never scored 3 times more assists than goals in a season. He's basically a pure goal scorer who's normally good for 30 goals and has never topped 60 assists.

The sadest part is all the users that look at those contracts and say yup seems fair. Must be nice to be an avs fan and sign Rantanen for 8.5m and get 5 stars lol.

Cheer up though. It’s just to demonstrate contracts that the leafs can move. Seems like everyone is attacking people for signing Matthews under 12.5m and marner under 10m. It reminds me a lot of nylander when everyone argued me that he was getting 8.5m plus. I just kept putting him in agm’s at 6.75m.

Seems like every team can sign their rfa’s to fair contracts, except for the leafs. Really makes me wonder why everyone hates them so much.

Speaking of "can walk on water". A few evenings ago, went for walk down the marina and harbour on Georgian Bay. It was dusk, quite lovely, Noticed the water was somewhat ice covered by there was some open water.
On the far side of the harbour there was fellow walking on bay. I watched him for about 12 minutes as he pushing some kinda sled. I was prepared to call 911 as concerned that he would hit a soft spot in the ice, and fall through. Every year some dies falling through the ice as they take the short cut going from one side of the bay to the other, and usually at this time of the year when the ice isn't solid. But he made it to shore, all it well.

After reading your comment, I now know why the fellow didn't fall through ice/water. It must have been Mitch Marner because he can walk on water as many Leafs fans suggest.smile

Given this time of year when the jolly fat man is on his way i thinks its good to believe in a lil beauty, magic and miracles. Like marner walking on water, and the leafs finally having a shot a winning a cup again!

Merry Christmas, to all you cantankerous cap friendly hockey fans!

I must say, that trade is horrendous. No way does Carolina trade their top new young upcoming star and their top young defenseman for a bunch of Leafs scraps. I mean come on now. This lacks any sort of common-sense and just makes it seem like you're a typical Leaf homer.
