This trade means that TO is effectively paying a 20 point middle pair defensive defenceman over 5 million a year. Larsson is not all that much better than Zaitsev and you are asking the Leafs to take on his salary, pay Zaitsev a 1 million a year and it'll also cost Brown and Johnsson to do that.

There is no way you can spin this to make it look like anything other than a complete an utter steal for the Oilers. They get 2 players who will play in their top 6 and a right handed defenceman who isn't much worse than the guy they traded and on top of all of that, they save another million off of Zaitsev's contract.

I think there's a typo where instead of Zaitsev (1m retained), Brown, and Johnsson, the Leafs offer Johnsson and Hainsey.

Dude, come on. You know the retained salary is a little much, and for Leaf fans to not want to take on 1mill of retained salary when we already have 1,2. I think thats pretty fair. Better the devil you know than the one you dont. I keep Zaitsev if the ask is to retain salary.

Plus people NEED to remember that Brown had more points than McDavid when they played together it Junior. If they can touch any of that magic, Oilers are golden.

From an Edmonton perspective I'd be hesitant. Larsson is extremely underrated IMO. He's a really good defensive defenceman. I think he's definitely a step up on Zaitsev, but with brown and Johnsson its definitely fair value. I'd probably say yes

oh boy idc how an overager played with potentially the best junior player of all time, hes probably not seeing time away from the 3rd line unless its on the PP. as for the retained salary sure its hard to stomach but Larsson is on a sweetheart contract and Zaitsev is getting 2M more than hes worth. hard to justify edmonton paying 4.5M for a guy to play on their 3rd pair

Show my work? You're the one that made the trade three NHL regulars for one.....The stats I looked show their isn't much difference. But getting minor leagues to replace Johnsson and Brown is folly.
Want to add Larsson to the Leafs fine, but at the expensed of Zaitsev and two other regulars and would only the RHD marginally ,,,,an overpayment

Washington could really use Brown on the PK and as a middle six RW, now that Oshie and Wilson got brained. His cap hit is pretty similar to Michal Kempny's. Kempny is slightly more valuable, but Tor can balance however they like, in my book..... but not Zaitsev. Love the player, can't afford the contract.
