Gourde might have made more money if he waiting till July and been a UFA. But he had just one good year in the NHL. Taking 33m guaranteed satisfied him more than taking the chance of having a poor year or getting injured. Players do this all the time. Taking guaranteed long term instead of going short term and hoping for greater riches done the road.
And if Gourde plays like a 8m player for the term of his contract, he won't be disappointed. He'll be happy he's playing great.
Kadri of the Leafs seemed to play much better after he got his 6 year 4.6m contract. Maybe he relaxed or became more focused.
