He would be retained as an rfa by the leafs and would not be allowed to play until next season. Odds are he would probably play over seas for the rest of the season or something

Now is he Toronto property till he signs or becomes a UFA in 5 years? If that's the case and Toronto continues to win there is no need to trade him for anything less than the RFA compensation.

LOL one of the Leafs fans was being serious suggesting the Hawks need to give up Jokiharju, Schmaltz and a 2nd or 1st round pick. Yeah, our 19 year old 1st line defensive player who has huge upside already in his first season at 19 playing 24 minutes a game next to Keith, Schmaltz who's 22 years old that scored more goals then nylander last year on a worse team then TOR, ,and a 1st or 2nd round pick.

Leafs fans need to wakeup and realize Nylander is good, but a guy who scores only 20 goals yet puts up 40 assists obviously is benefiting from his line mates elite talent and Nylander himself is really good but hardly elite.

                      8mx7 = 56m divided by 5 years = 11.2m which is 4 1sts

Just so you know, anything over 7.2m x7 is 4 1sts. Anything less Toronto matches.

From what I've read he is Toronto's There is mostly likely recourse for Nylander but I don't know. I would have to assume the League would intervene if it goes past a 2nd year. Since I have the floor the one thing I want to say is every player has DIFFERENT VALUE TO DIFFERENT TEAMS. As an example I'm a Wings fan and I've seen Larkin in some trades but The Wings are using him as the corner stone of their rebuild so short of being offered Conor McDavid and Austin Matthews in trade he isn't going to go anywhere. Is Larkin's ability worth that no but certain players have more value to different teams. Two players that were untouchable when Babcock was in Detroit Z and Glendening a bottom 6 forward does that make a lot of sense to people outside of Detroit and now Toronto probably not much.

Yup that’s a bad deal deal joki would be one for one even then I don’t think Chicago bites on it. But I had a guy try and tell me that nylander was worth Murphy and a 2nd... maybe you know him...

Again, Joki for Nylander straight up would be a dump move for the Hawks or most teams. 1st line RHD guys are a premium especially at 19 which is really rare. Nylander and a 2nd for Joki maybe. Nylander, like Schmaltz, is worth a solid 2nd line D player and a 1st or 2nd pick....that's fair. Murphy is one of the most underrated defensemen in the league. If you watched this guy develop last year, he's still on the younger side and some D guys develop late, you would have seen two different players by the end of the season.

I wouldn't expect a non Hawks fan to watch Murphy closely, but I'll tell you, if it wasn't for Jokiharju, and the dead weight contract of Seabs coupled with two potential stars ready next year in Boqvist and Ian Mitchell, Murphy would be dumb to give up as he is a solid 2nd line pairing. The Hawks have a log jam of young defensive talent while needing to carry Seabs and keith for the next 5 years. Boqvist, Beaudin, Mitchell, Chad Krys, Jokiharju, Forsling...all these guys will play in the NHL and all ages 17 to 22. Hawks can't afford to keep Murphy unfortunately.

Oh I’ve watched Murphy and I like thevway he plays... I’m not sure if he’s a hockey player or a body builder but either way he has full value to me. I added schmaltz and Murphy together for nylander due to the fact of schmaltz. He is the one I am unsure of. I think he is worth the gamble. Lots of hikes in his game though, but like nylander he is young. He just doesn’t have the same ceiling.

Totally different player. Schmaltz is more a two way and grittier player then Nylander whereas Nylander is more dynamic. They are the same age, and agree Schmaltz has a slightly lower ceiling but not far off from one another.

He may, but it doesn’t seem that he has been looking for any short term deals. He wants big money 7-8 years. I think to be honest though with all of the difficulties probably would, but who really wants to pay him 8m especially on a 5 year deal? It’s funny how everyone wants to say he’s worth less than what the leafs fans are trying to trade him for but yeah let’s offersheet him for 8m. I think the chain reaction that hits your teams rfa’s is Enough to deter teams from interfering with other teams negotiations. I can’t even count on both hands how many times I’ve seen canes agm’s with an 8m nylander x 5years that are signing aho at 7.5m x 8years. Same with avs and ratanen. They did an 8m x 5 offersheet and then figured that rantanen will sign the next year for 8x8m.... I think most GM’s are hoping that nylander is signed as cheap as possible. From all the quotes I’ve heard from other nhl staff none of them think nylander is worth a cent more than 6.5m. They all have a vested interest in that. Look what contracts like Draisatl and eichel have done for comparables.

Oh I agree. I don't think Nylander is worth more than $6-6.5mil. with the cap continually rising I can say $7mil is still a fair price however. What I find surprising is that leaf fans don't seem to get that it's not uncommon for teams to overpay for a player to ensure his services (Habs did it with Petry, $4-4.5mil was probably his fair market value at the time, but Habs needed to give him $5.5mil in order for him to stay. Why does it have to be so different with Nylander? RFA vs UFA be damned, he is still a free agent without a contract. If he wants the Leafs to pay him $8mil, that's his right. As far as he's concerned, he did his time playing cheap with his entry level deal, now cough over the cash.

a bunch of insiders have said that Nylander wants to stay a leaf. That's why there's no offer sheets that have been sign or offered, Nylander has made it clear he wants to stay. But Nylander, his agent, his dad, pretty much every other NHL fan base and half of the leafs fans know that fitting everyone under the cap will be almost impossible and that someone is going to be moved. Nylander just wants to make sure that it won't be him once he signs his deal. So what's the only thing that he has some control over in order to not get moved? His next contract.
Make it so that someone else's contract is easier to move than yours. That's all he's got. Leafs refusing to overpaying him by $1-1.5mil (which is not that bad and pretty much most other teams have to end up doing btw) just proves he's right.
And I get Leafs management side of this, don't get me wrong. If they overpay they 1000% can't keep everyone. In my opinion the problem right now is that Nylander agrees with that and is saying "choose me and move someone else". The fact that Dubas is probably fielding calls on Nylander now is proof that Willy is right. Leafs would rather trade him before moving another core player. Might as well trade him now and get it over with.

If I'm the leafs though, I'd feel Nylander is screwing them over. It's a no-win situation with how they handle him. if he doesn't sign and they don't move him, it's a wasted chance at putting the best team possible this year. If he doesn't sign and they do move him, they 99% won't be getting the best player in the deal, and they help whichever team get him (because whoever wants him is to increase their chances at wining the cup..duh...kind of counter productive since the leafs are suppose to be contenders)

I agree with 99% of this. I think it has a lot more to do with money than being traded the quotes from dubas that as long as he is the gm till they fire him he is a leaf and shanahan saying that nylander is his kids favorite player and there is no way that he will be moved... to me is a pretty strong message falling in def ears in the nylander camp. Also anything 7m or lower and the leafs have no problems signing all their rfa’s. Even at 8m you can still sign all your major pieces maybe a guy like brown would need to be moved and replaced with an elc. The good news for Toronto is they have only two nmc contracts and lots of movable assets. Ones that would actually yield returns rather than costing you to ditch.

If nylander sits out he loses. He is nowhere closer to arbitration with no leverage what so ever. Yes it does hurt the leafs to a lesser degree... we will be without nylander and he is a part of the team... but he certainly isn’t worth more than the remainder he leaves behind. If he wants to be a leaf he will take s deal... let’s face it the only way leafs start listening to trade iffers us if they feel nylander doesn’t want to be a part of this team. If he is being offered his fair value... that everyone in hockey but Willy and his agent (and his dad) agree with and he is still willing to sit out. I don’t think he really wants to be on this team. Poetic justice would be him sitting out and the leafs winning the cup. But that’s a pipe dream 50 years in the making.

yeah I think Nylander just isn't buying Dubas's "We can and will will" stuff. and I honestly think Nylander wants to stay. If he didn't care about the leafs and just wanted to play for money, doesn't matter where in the NHL, we would of heard of a trade request by now. Who wants to sit not playing until Dec? Nylander probably firmly believes the leafs can't keep everyone. and he's looking into the future and I'm not talking about the Connor Brown's, or depth players, but the actual core guys like Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Andersson in 3 years to be resigned, Reilly in 4 years. What happens when they need new deals? will letting a few depth guys go make the difference between those guys raises? I think not and imo Nylander's agent and his dad are feeding him the same info.
Nylander asking for $8mil is an overpay for sure in today's NHL (and I'd bet he'd take a $7.5mil deal), but it's not as outrageous as most people claim it to be. Contracts for NHL players are only going to go up. in 5-6 years an $8mil cap hit won't even be bad at all. and we'll probably have top guys (the Jack Hughes and Alexis Lafreniere's kind of guys) making $17-18mil a year by then.
