Hard pass! This trade does not help the Leafs whatsoever.

Personally, I don't see Toronto accepting this trade. Jay Bouwmeester is a UFA this summer and Robby Fabbri is almost always injured. Toronto is essentially trading one of the best young players in the league for one year of an ageing defenceman, a good second line defenceman, and another name to put onto the injured reserve.
Though as a Blues fan, I do like it wink

I think both teams decline. Edmundson has been the Blues best defenseman this year, but he’s also not the top pair guy you’d want in a Nylander trade.

No, Nylander was just informed less than a week that he WAS NOT GETTING TRADED. He FLEW TO NYLANDER saying that. PLUS this trade would be THE WORST OPTION for Toronto to give up Nylander. (Sorry for the caps it’s just EMPHASIS purposes)

Doesn't really matter what was said to Nylander by Dubas....that's part of negotiation. But I do agree, Nylander will not be traded. Leafs just cannot give in to an RFA who wants to dictate salary. The Leafs haven't given up on Nylander, they have NHL control of for five years, minus one month.

Think back 250 years ago, when the French peasants said "They wanted money", OK bread . Antointte Marie Dubas said , "Let them eat cake."

Here is the problem with this logic. The Leafs have to worry about offer sheets. With Matthews and Marner due significant raises this will be difficult for the Leafs to match. So the question now becomes do I trade his rights and get something for him or let him sign an offer sheet? Not sure Dubas can take that route.

I agree with the title. You are almost at November. You have no contract. You got 30 some days left. You better start making a deal.

I don't think he's signable in Toronto at this point. The attitude of management really blew it on this one. Even if you want players to take less, you don't publicly state that. It makes it seem like you devalue the players and are rolling them while the owner ranks in the cash off their backs. It's also bad news to start dropping large piles of cash on UFA and then turn to the players who took you to the dance and say take less. Toronto fans need to start looking at this differently. Instead of signing Nylander you got JT + whatever Nylander returns you. It's not a bad deal. But it's pretty clear there are gonna be issues in Toronto this year and next. As I really don't see Matthews and Marner "taking less to keep the team together". The next CBA is gonna be really fun. Issue 1 Escro payment. Issue 2 what counts as revenue. Issue 3, lower UFA age. NHL "but but but Olympics." Players "pay me"

Actually until the next CBA starts over, or the next lockout if it happens sooner than five years. I heard if they don’t give him a contract by the next CBA, which is next year right?, then he will be he youngest modern UFA. I think

????. But the Leafs have offered him a contract under the terms of the CBA, which is why the Leafs have retained his rights.
Just my thoughts on the next CBA. Let's imagine that the 50/50 revenue sharing doesn't change. The actual money going to the players doesn't change. Many of the players make under 2m a year. Do they want to lose a years pay in their shortened careers.? Just guessing that the vast majority of players....who have have the same voting rights as the stars, don't give a hoot about the stars getting more money, they want more money.

Take a look at the Nylander situation. The Leafs probably think 6.5m is fair. Nylander wants 8m. Since the Leafs pay to the cap, that 1.5m is coming out of other players salaries...and probably not the stars.( ifNylander signs for 8m) So in effect the 1m players like Leivo, Dermot, Kapanen, Johnson, etc would have be squeezed by 250,000 each if. Nylander gets 8m. I betcha the majority of Leaf players want Nylander back playing, but not at their expense when they sign their next contracts.

We'll see what the offer sheets are. But I don't why so many think the Leafs have real cap issues next year? Just do the math on the Leafs next year roster. Other teams have budgets/cap issues too. Is Matthews entitled to as much as Hart winner McDavid. Is Marner worthy of top 10 RW money coming off his ELC.
And trading Nylander rights? Other teams want certainly on his contract. Carolina seems like a logical trade partner. Don't think Carolina has the desire to overpay Nylander when Aho and Teravainen have their RFA contracts next year. Colorado is another destination,, and they have Raatannen to sign next year. So, I really think it is fallacy that the Nylander can find another team that wants to overpay him. There certainly has been no indication that the Leafs want to underpay Nylander. I'm kinda surprised (disappointed ) that they couldn't agree on a bridge which would allow Nylander to up his value on a big contract in a few years (think Trouba).
