Habs shouldn't trade Price/Weber : Here's why

Description
Habs need to keep those two guys. Yes they could get picks and prospects and rebuild from scratch but that's not necessarily gonna work. My example is the Edmonton Oilers. They had almost no veteran players to help out all their top 5 picks from 2010 to 2015, struggled and struggled, and we can still argue that it's still the case today. Young players playing around great Veterans like Weber, Price, Gallagher, Petry will help their development. They need mentors. It will also make the team half decent so they don't get destroyed every single game. It will provide them more confidence and will to play the game. Otherwise the team will look like the Sabres and Oilers, and spend 5 years (being generous) and still not make the playoffs.

I'm all for trading Lehkonen if the return is nice but he should not be "shopped" as if he's any of the other guys on that list. Lehkonen is a good, young, cost controlled player. You don't put guys like him on the trade block.

I think we have a surplus at LW and should trade Lehkonen while other teams still see upside in him to get the most value. But yeah shouldn't be on a trade block you're right.

If we have a surplus at LW the last guy traded should be Lehkonen... this guys going to be a big player on the team going forward. Also I think they should keep Tatar. Good cap hit and has potential for a 25-25 season

Good presentation of Price and Weber role. I think the same way.

Yup agreed on the surplus at that position for sure. Gonna need to figure that out eventually. The nice thing about wingers is they can play both sides pretty easily though. So I'm not too worried.

I agree with this completely. With the cap going up every year and the number of entry-level contracts we will have for the next 3-6 years Prices and Webers contracts won't matter and by the time we're ready for contention the only other player we will absolutely have to resign is Gallagher. I also agree with the guys above, I love Lehkonen, I think he will be a great piece for years to come and his trade value will probably be higher once he has a few 30+ point seasons under him and is signed to a nice contract, which is bound to happen after his ELC

I don't think Montreal really has a choice with Weber. With the injuries, his age, and that massive contract that takes him until he's 41, I don't think any team is looking to add him anymore...

Agree, plus teams don't have to tank to reach cup contender status (look at WPG and NSH). Drafting stud players on a consistent basis is the key. Somebody was asking on another post: "How come this team seemed to have all the pieces 5-6 years ago and achieved nothing?" Pour drafting since 2007 certainly didn't help.

First of all I think Price and Weber will be difficult to move. But you are right they should keep them. Price alone will provide them steady goaltending throughout the next 8 years, he will not always be an elite goalie but he will be a steady starter that will win you more than he loses. Same with Weber, throughout the duration of his deal he won’t remain at the level he has been, but I think he will still be an effective defender, I could see him being good into his 40s like Chara. Also with the way the league is now you never know, the Habs could get in this year for all we know

I find it interesting that Tatar has a "good cap hit" and Lucic has a "bad cap hit", when both players got just 34 points last year and Lucic had more points the previous 2 years.

And Price for the same reasons.

idk if price or weber are movable to begin with, I could see some interest in price(but his contract means he might say no to that place) but not a ton in weber, the habs would absolutely have to kick in retention to have any shot. So by that point why not just keep him I guess.

Lucic is 3 years older, has 700,000 more against the cap and is under contract 3 years longer than Tatar. Also Tatar has managed to score 20 goals 5 straight seasons including the last 2 where he played the majority of his games with the stinky red wings

They're TWO years apart, Lucic's contract is TWO years longer than Tatar's, and Lucic gets more points than Tatar and has every year except one. Also, Lucic brings other elements to the game if he isn't scoring, Tatar does not. Notice he was inconsequential in Vegas' cup run? Got benched for the majority of the games.
