Personally, I like this trade as a Flames fan.

Smith was holding up a lot last year and when he went down things really fell apart; Gillies and Rittich are the closest to stepping up but I'd feel much more comfortable with more stability in net.

Price brings a hell of a lot more than just stability and I'd take an all-star goaltender any day of the week. Plus if you folks are in full rebuild mode and want to give Price a shot, and I know I'm really biased here, I think the Flames are a Price/1st string goalie away from being a consistent stanley cup finals threat.

The only tricky thing for us is the long term cap space. We still need to sign Tkachuk so I don't see Max staying here more than this year (if this ever were to happen). Having said that, I'd rather have the problem of moving salary out if it meant we had a goalie of Price's calibre in net.

Treize131 is correct about long term cap space. Seeing Ceci got 4.25m in his arbitration, I can't see Hanifan signing for so little long term.

I’m hoping they fix this contract problem in the next CBA, without a lockout. A couple years ago guys coming out of entry level deals were signing affordable contracts, now, no one knows where the market is because of UFA signings and long term high paying contracts to young kids.

this benefits both teams I would love to see a blockbuster like this. all depends on the patches extension however.

Habs would never retain salary on Price. Max they would. Plus Calgary's top 6 are set for years to come. Max is a rental for them. Hanifan is only 21 maybe just 3 years for him. Smith can steal games and Habs need good picks so no thanks. Calgary will have to move him themselves. Could be better ufas for goalies next year anyways.
