MTL would you do it?

Description
There is definitely a trade waiting to happen if MTL is willing to take a little salary back... Sekera is a solid 2nd pairing dman and MTL has the ability to add the extra million in cap while adding valuable picks whether they would keep them or use them to acquire NHL talent and speed up their rebuild/retool.

From Edmontons perspective this is probably an overpayment and it is mortgaging the future however at some point you have to go for it if you wanna compete for the cup. If just making the playoffs is fine keep the picks and move forward. Patches would give EDM 2 legit scoring lines and free up the bottom six to contribute more goal share. The RW is still concerning but with McDavid + Nuge & Drai + Patches you have two elite combos on your top 2 lines.

Also i hope the Oilers bridge Nurse, much like MTL did on Subbans second deal which was 2 years at 3 million roughly. With that being said i do not feel like Nurse is ever going to be on Subbans level however a bridge deal for dmen allows the team and player to better gauge long term value.

You realize this is fantasy right.... NMC & NTC dont really apply considering i dont have a direct line to the players i traded and cant confirm or deny their willingness to be traded.
And "no value for MTL" how is a top 3/4 dman, 1st round pick and a conditional 2nd / 3rd round pick no value??? youre a clown if you think MTL is getting zero return

I wouldn't do that trade, his next contract asking price is too high. Would be better to let MTL lose him for nothing. And likely wont sign an extension, so your losing a 1st for 1 year of him possibly being a 40 goal scorer.

MTL is going to deal him this year and i have my doubts he ever hits the open market. He probably gets dealt to a contender and resigns in the summer of 2019.

I don't doubt that he will get traded, but he isnt going to net a 1st round ++, I would assume that it will be similar to the Kane trade, a prospect and conditional picks if he does resign with the team he was traded too.

He is more valuable then Kane though. If Kane gets you a prospect and a second as a rental then Pacioretty gets you a first and a prospect as a rental. I would also look at what Rick Nash got and think Pacioretty would get you something better than that.

I don’t think either team would do this deal for various reasons. The biggest reason is simply money. Edmonton would want to bring in someone they would have long term and they can’t afford Pacioretty. And on Montreal’s side they would most likely ask for a prospect instead of Sekera and I don’t think they would be willing to give up Bear or Yamamoto in the deal.

The Kane trade included a 1st round pick, a conditional pick and a prospect. Patches will get all of that if the right GM is dealing ham

For arguments sake assume the deal is done as such Edmonton reduces is current cap hit by 1 million dollars. When they go to resign Patches he is going to command roughly 8 million?? Which means edmonton is going to need to make some decisions regarding current long term deals ie: Lucic, Russell, Kassian, and Nuge. The best option imo is to buyout the final 2 years of russell, dont pay your backup goalie 2.5mill, bridge Puuljarvi, Rattie and Rieder and assume the cap will increase by 3-4 million. And with that all being said Edm could afford Patches. Bad money deals are not a death sentence look at Toronto and how the managed to rid themselves of bad money

Might be a little much from edmonton but the habs could use a guy like sekera and if those picks are unprotected i would not hesitate

I disagree with it as a good trade comparable. Pacioretty doesn’t come with any locker room question marks, Kane has never gotten above 60 points, Kane only has one 30 goal season and can’t play defense. Pacioretty is far more valuable in my mind.

There is really no point to Habs taking Sekera in this deal...... the name of our game is to be losing right now. Not trying to win. We want picks and prospects only. We will however take Sekera (If he were to waive his NMC) under the pretense that we're taking his cap off your hands and in return we'd get an extra pick or prospect.

And for those EDM fans saying Sekera is this and Sekera is that, you keep him then..... We don't need him at all.

If pacioretty doesnt come with quesitons marks then why don't the habs want to resign him?

To much money for to long and we have a bunch of left wingers. Domi and Drouin are our top two left wingers of the future

Both those player are unproven, Drouin is a little more established, but still Paicoretty would still be a factor on the deal at 4-5 years for 5.5-6 mill. The problem is that Bergiven did not try and negotiate with him. Signs of a another issue.

I know their unproven but it’s whats happening, probably not for the best but here we are. Bergiven asked him what he was looking for and basically knew he wasn’t going to be able to offer what he wanted. He apparently asked for 8x8. Pacioretty will most likely get 5 years $7.5 million, Kane and JVR signed similar deals and he has had a better career then both of them and can command more.
