Okay well how about Rick Nash as an upgrade over Zach Hyman. I love Zach Hyman, dont get me wrong, but this is a hell of a 1st line going into the playoffs.

I think Nash is an interesting idea for Toronto, but that package won't get it done. Nash will get a pretty good haul wherever he goes. A 1st plus a prospect.

NO, NO, NO. Why? So Brown and Kapanen gets bumped down. Leafs don't need another bottom six winger. And to trade Carrick, a position of need, what would be the point? I'm sure some team would the most to the Rangers, but IMO, that package you offered if way too much for the Leafs and maybe for any team.

First of all Nash is UFA after this season. The package as above, wouldn't work for the Rangers, and putting Nash on the Leafs fourth line is akin to a Tuxedo on a pig! He might be the least 4th line player in all of hockey! A strong Power, goal scoring forward, when healthy, is a 1st line compliment type player so playing him down in the lineup is an insult!
A great player, unfortunately an awkward fit for the Leafs, who would have to give up too much to make it work!

Hey Doug7004, that is exactly why the trade works. Because he is a UFA. Since he doesn't have term, Rangers should want to at least get something for him. The trade solves 2 problems. Gets Leivo to another team. Although I am not sure how much he gets to play there either. Plus we get rid of a defencemen that in a year or so will be in the same position as Leivo. Good enough to be on an NHL roster, but doesn't seem to fit in.

Hey MarioPecchia91...the final lines would need tweeking. The first two lines are solid, but then I would do as follows: 3rd Line: Nash/Marleau/Brown and 4th Line: Komorov/Bozak/Kapanen

I think Nash could be a perfect fit for the leafs, Idk what these fools are thinking. I do agree that this package won't get it done though.
Nash will play in the top 6 with them.
Hyman most likely losing his top 6 time and goes to the 3rd.
If the younger guys get bumped out of the line up and the go down and tear it up with the marlies that isn't the worst thing in the world. That's what adding depth is for so that you have guys hanging in the wind just in case.

package does not get it done.. i'll even go a second rounder with the condition of turning into a first depending on how far toronto goes, but those players specifically do not get the deal to go through.. guarenteed first and we'll talk differently

Nash isn't worth it. I would keep my picks. Toronto needs a true stay at home defenseman.

He's not going to get a 1st, unless it comes with the condition of making the Cup finals.

Teams just aren't parting with their 1st round picks anyone for rentals. Only 2 1sts (Hanzal and Shattenkirk) were traded last year (in a weak draft), and 1 1st (Ladd) the year before. All 3 of those teams have some sort of buyers remorse.

TOR doesn't want NASH even for a 3rd rounder!!! SOOOO over-rated even at a $4M cap hit!!! The very first argument I got into on CapFriendly was 2.5 years ago with @palhal and I called Nash garbage. I know he's done a lot for team Canada back in the day and I probably shouldn't have used that language, but he's on pace for YET ANOTHER SUB 40 POINT SEASON!!! You get a guy like Nash to score, but he can't score. That's like getting a goalie, but his only flaw is he can't stop the puck from going in the net.

That is exactly why this trade works. Salary is retained and he is a UFA after next season, so its not like Toronto would be locking him up over a long term. Its a low risk trade, but you would have to give up a lot more than I suggested, as I am sure plenty of teams would offer a lot more. I think if he played here, he would be a great fit as Matthews left winger.

I agree. I think the package I suggested would not get it done as I believe other teams would be offering a lot more. May turn into a bidding war. I think he would be a big upgrade over Connor Brown and Zach Hyman. He looks like he has been playing a lot better recently and I think he would be amazing playing with Matthews.

Mario, you changed the post, once you realized he is UFA. But my principle still remain. 1) He has to play top 6, and would be a great fit! 2) The package as constructed, is low risk for the Leafs, but won't cut it for Rangers. 3) Babcock will not move Hyman. . . .who is a great compliment for Matthews and Nylander. 4) If they bring in a Nash, would/could they package JVR for a top 4 Dman, a much greater need!

Nope all Canadian teams are on Rick Nash no trade list he wants to play in the US alone he will only accept a trade to 12 teams and reportedly no Canadian teams are on the list.

Rangers absolutely say yes to this new package. Don't think we're going to get a better offer than that.

exo2769. Gee, you and I getting in an argument? Surprised, cause you and I think often think a like on team structure. Thought I wouldn't call Nash garbage, he sure is overpaid for what he brings now....and 2.5 years ago, there is so much better value for than Nash at 7.8m. I think Nash will get traded but I can't see the Rangers getting as much as many Ranger fan think he's worth. And the Leafs would really have little interest. If the Leafs make a trade it should be for a centre or Dman, not wasting assets on a winger.

I was a younger, more argumentative, and more naive man then! smile hahaha You and I do think alike on team structure. You have great insight! Leafs Definitely need a Dman in lieu of a winger. I actually think TOR should...over pay if they have to...for a guy like Trouba. I know WPG is playoff bound, but Trouba wants out of WPG bad! TOR has sooo many good young prospects. There might be some really good ones still down with the Marlies that never get a chance. Give Chevy what he wants via prospects and picks and lock Trouba down!

HI exo. Here is my new thought on the Leafs and it's changed in the past month. 1. No way the Leaf are going to beat Bruins or Tampa in the first round this year, so I wouldn't really be buyers this TDL.(haven't changed much on this ).
2. Trouba has set up as UFA in summer of 2020, so he a guy I don't think the Leafs would want to be the highest bidder for his services. (haven't changed here either)
3. Here's a different thought: Leafs young Dman are OK, and really don't need to go bonkers trading for anyone. Again I'm looking at a 2019 roster which composes of a Reilly, Borgman, Dermot at LHD (Gardiner gone via UFA). Zaitsev, Liljgren maybe Carrick at RHD, heck may a UFA or a trade.
4. After Matthews and Kadri, the Leafs don't have anyone at centre. Nylander and Marleau are iffy options. So as Leaf GM (yea right). securing a #2/3 centre for next fall and even maybe for a few years is the priority. Presently the Leafs have good potential in NHL wingers on the horizon. Kapanen has secured a spot, Johnson has busted out with the Marlies and then Timsashov and Bracco of the Marlies might be couple years away. Grundstrom of the SHL, seems like a lock in a year or two also.
Leafs have three picks in the first two rounds. If they drafted 3 centres....I wouldn't complain.

@palhal solid thoughts. Sometimes it's simply better to be patient and grow organically and minor moves.

***EDIT*** wouldn't that also be like the Blackhawks of years ago!!! Bringing in Centerman Handzus was a minor move that really changed the complexion of that team.

Teams that trade cost efficient players or picks constantly, just chase their tails....It's a losing proposition. I saw enough of that during the Dark Ages (Ferguson Jr, Burke and Nonis). Leafs are really on track now. The Leafs have this young core, that seem to really like each other much like the Hawks did with Toews, Kane, Seabrook, Keith and Crawford. Draft well, add 2 or 3 young guys a season, maybe a UFA ,as the older and more expensive guys move on.....hey seems like a winning combo. Worked for Hawks for years, and Pittsburg, and Boston and Tampa seem to have that formula too.
