Montreal walks away from this pretty bad.
Yes it helps getting Allen off the books for next season, but this still leaves them in the same situation of having 3 goalies at the NHL level (somewhat with Samsonov), and they’re losing a big right handed shot defender that would probably fetch a decent return alone to a contending team. Robertson’s numbers might look decent but he’s a very streaky player and I don’t think he moves the needle for Montreal too much.
As for Toronto - they make out like bandits in this deal. Not only do they add a right handed shot defender that’s big and fits their desired play style, but they solidify the goaltending. Allen may have bad numbers in Montreal but he’s shown and proven before that he can provide good goaltending behind a good defence. In Toronto he’d see a drastic improvement in his numbers with a much better defence. The only issue for Toronto is that they’d likely lose Jones to waivers when Woll returns and that’s tough to swallow with Woll’s injury history and the lack of goaltending depth in the organization.
If in Montreal, I’m not making this deal and I’d think I could get a much better deal elsewhere
