I don't know what his value is, but buffalo certainly isn't paying a second for him. Also, depth left shot d are probably the easiest players to pick up, everybody seems to have one that's making a bit more than the team wants to pay, and they would be thrilled to give them away for a late round pick- just to free up some cap space. That's what you are competing with.
