I think that's a huge overpay for Larsson imo. It's an overpay already but dropping Borgen and adding Niemela is rough.

It does when it provides cap flexibility to address other areas of need like this trade does. Without saving the money on Brodie taking a lesser D man the other trades that make the Leafs D better don't happen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Sorry, to expect Brodie who may be on last year in the NHL would agree to a trade to last place team, instead of playing for a contender defies all logic. So many Leafs fans think getting bottom end Dmen from non playoff teams though they may be "big" in this this Peeke is a solution. The fourth and fifth Dmen on the non playoff Flames is the answer Better Dmen may be the answer.
Gotta think Zaradov is worth more in trade. But that's a massive overpay for Tanev.
But geez, it's always the same story by so many. Not one criticism of the poor value play by Marner, Matthews, Bertuzzi and Tavares this season has been bigger problem for the Leafs, but surely this should be common knowledge at this point for anyone who watched Leaf games this season.</div></div>
Why would it be Brodie's last year in the NHL? He's 33 years old, that doesn't make sense lol
This is an AGM post, not a whine and complain about our forwards production post. Our D is the biggest area of need and I'm sure you would agree, even if we also need more production from our forwards. The two can exist at the same time. So I really don't understand how that comment adds anything to this conversation.

Good grief man lol no they don't. You cannot honestly look at this Leafs d core post trades and say for 1 second it's worse. It's the cost of doing business. You really think Mark f'n Giordano is the straw that breaks the camels back on a deal like this? Come on.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>You really think Brodie would have CBJ on his trade list?
Flames say no. But really how does this "right the ship"? Trading three Dmen for two hurts the Leafs. Never mind the giving up futures for no reason.</div></div>
I don't know who is on his no-trade list, do you? Did you think Gaudreau would do to CBJ? Because I sure didn't. We can't assume we know everything that's unknown. We also can't even assume whoever Brodie were traded to would even keep him, a lot can happen.
Your math is also a little off there, my trades have 3 D outgoing and 3 D incoming. It's not for nothing if you watch any of the Leafs games or think critically for 2 seconds. Leafs don't have a single D man outside of mayyyyyybe McCabe that is moving anyone from the front of the net, nevermind being a physical presence. Zadorov addresses that and provides some much needed size and toughness the Leafs need to not get absolutely bullied in the playoffs. Tanev we know his upside and he's a great fit for the Leafs. I'm not sure you understand how trades or retention work if you assess this as "giving up futures for no reason". Teams aren't in the habit of just doing their buddies a solid by retaining salary to fit under the cap so obvious we need to pay a price for it. Surely this should be common knowledge at this point - especially if you're a "long time Leafs sufferer" you should know this practise.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Abruzzese has next to zero trade value. He needs to play 69 more NHL games this season to not become a Group 6 UFA (<a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/faq#ufa6">you can read about that here</a>). The problem is there are only 60-64 games remaining in the season so it is impossible for him to meet that quota.
A 3rd alone does not get you Zadorov, he is easily worth more than a 2nd. Not to mention this is very likely a sellers market and demand for defenseman is high thanks to Vegas winning the cup. Zadorov is not Luke Schenn, he is a strictly better player in every way possible. Zadorov is a player very similar to Nic Hague (who just played a big role in Vegas' cup win).</div></div>
I think you will be surprised when Zadorov doesn't fetch you the moon, the sun, the stars and the sky. Maybe I'm wrong, it's happened before and it will happen again, but I don't think Calgary is getting the return the fans seem to expect they will.

A 3rd and pending UFA doesn't come close to Zadorov
Upgrade the 3rd to a 2nd and the Vancouver trade is probably fair. Raty was considered a top 70 prospect last year but not anymore
DeAngelo is a cap dump and a known locker room cancer. Pashin is a C level prospect that is probably going to stay in the KHL, 1st and 2nd is definitely not enough for Lindholm</div></div>
I'll agree with what you're saying about the DeAngelo trade. But I think you're dreaming if you think Zadorov is getting much more than that if at all. Tanev, I'll agree that change makes sense though but I don't think they scoff at any of those 3 deals by any means.

Of course it's going to be a lot for a premium player, in the prime of their career, that would be one of your top players. I would assume any trade people post with Nylander is based on the assumption they will be extending him as well.
"Doesn't need" lol c'mon now. Columbus finished tied for 2nd last in the league and finished with the 3rd fewest goals for. Nylander would have been CBJs top goal scorer, 2nd in assists, top PP contributor and top overall point producer.

I really want Zadorov, he fits exactly what we need. I went with Lily because the alternative is Timmins and an earlier round pick which still leaves Lily pushed down the depth chart. So I figure Lily moving gives him a genuine opportunity somewhere else in spite of the fact I wish they would just play and develop him in Toronto - but they don't seem intent on ever doing that.

Valuable yes, not valuable enough to bridge that gap in quality between the two.
There's a middle ground somewhere, I just don't know where it is lol
Leafs fans will say Pesce and Jarvis for Nylander and Canes fans will say, "You're crazy if you think you're getting Jarvis too! Canes are HIGH on Jarvis, won't ever happen"
Canes fans will say exactly what you did, Nylander for Pesce straight up is worth it to save the cap space down the line. But the chasm between the two in value is too large for that to happen.
I think most realistically would be like Pesce, Teuvo and a pick of some sort for Nylander and a later pick. Granted it would need to come with Pesce and Nylander both extending and Carolina retaining a decent amount on Teuvo which would be a tough pill to swallow.
Maybe something like Pesce and Necas for Nylander+ but even that I think is too rich for Carolina fans to swallow either and likely not worth it considering how close in points to Nylander Necas was for like $m less. I don't know the answer but it sounds like both sides will not be happy with wherever the middle ground is haha

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fangm</b></div><div>Maybe this is right with the way the money is in the league but statistically tatar is easily a top 100 winger. Analytically he runs circles around Domi, Debrincat and so many others. If you get him for league min he'd likely be the best contract in the league. I think most models have him around $6M.
Cat is a bit of an exaggeration but he was horrible last year. I don't expect tatar to better in future.</div></div>
Sure, I'll agree he's a top 100 winger. I just have this feeling he's not getting close to $4m in free agency. If he was going to I feel like he would've got it already. Maybe I'm wrong and I'll be happy to admit it if I am proven wrong, I just think he'll be in the $1.5-2.5m range this season with whoever he signs with. I'm not as in tune with the analytics as some people are, I'll admit that. But he's also been very inconsistent with his production year to year and in a league where scoring goals is king, scoring a total of 45 goals in his last 3 seasons isn't stellar by comparison to guys you mentioned like Debrincat - Domi sure, but Domi didn't get $4m either.

Yeesh, that's a lot of not happening. No way they trade Reaves immediately after signing him. I don't see the Leafs moving Nylander unless it's shoring up our defense. The Konecny deal, in spite of retention and Murray contract is still a bit of an overpay but it wouldn't surprise me if a deal similar was made and Tatar is going to be lucky to be on a PTO this preseason.

Leafs Possible Options
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gmurrayt</b></div><div>You actually have a point. Upon further reflection, it would cost at least a 2nd, probably more to dump Murray. Timmins is worth a 7th, Voit maybe a mid round pick if being generous. So upon closer review, Nashville likely would not do this deal even if Fabbro was replaced by the very popular future considerations.</div></div>
I'm sure we're doing that thing where I as a Leaf fan overvalue my guys a bit and you, as a non-Leaf fan, think Leafs players are worthless.
Timmins is 100% worth more than a 7th. He would get at minimum a 6th rounder, more likely a 5th rounder. Voit more likely a 3rd rounder, if we're only talking about draft pick compensation for either, possibly a touch more provided how well he's developed and played in the OHL.
So through that lens, Murray, a 3rd and a 5th for Fabbro I can better understand why you wouldn't take it. But I don't think it would take a whole lot more to do it.
As a Preds fan, what's your take on Carrier? I don't know a whole lot about him so I'd be curious to hear your insight.
