I agree, but either way it's gonna be important for at least one of Ranta/Olausson/Foudy to hit and be NHL ready to be an effective bottom 6 player

I agree with all of this, plus the Avs have two more years of Toews on a sweetheart deal, I think there's a good chance he walks after that unless the cap goes up significantly. When that happens, you're gonna be very happy to have a (then 26-year old) top 4 puck-moving D that still has 3 years left at $5 million. Yes, the Avs are making win-now moves, but their core is still ridiculously young, it's not like they're in the Pittsburgh/Washington just squeeze whatever you can out of however many years their core's have left. The Avs should be a contender for at least the next 5 years and maybe the next 10.

Seriously I don't get the desire to move a 24-year old top 4 D locked in at a fair number for 5 years in order to keep a 32-year old 2C who's probably gonna get worse throughout the contract.

Big val
I'm glad they re-signed him but that's a lot more money and term than I was expecting. Hopefully they can get Lehkonen in at a decent number and figure out a 2C. I think this makes it more likely they find a cheaper 2C to bridge to Newhook and then you have Mack/Rantanen/Landy/Nuke/Newhook/Lehkonen as your top 6 for the forseeable future.

Cap Hell 20222023
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mergus80</b></div><div>I think this general concept is probably what they do. Of their big three UFAs, it sounds like their closest to extending Nichushkin. I don’t see how they can fit Kadri, and rather than extending Burakovsky I think it makes more sense to spend on a replacement 2C. Trocheck would be a good fit.
On the back end, I’m wondering if they try to keep Jack Johnson or Ryan Murray, rather than spending a little more on a guy they’re less familiar with. MacDermid is also a serviceable option as a rotational bottom-pair D, and I’m curious to see how much opportunity they give Danila Zhuravlyov.
The one wrinkle I could see is extending Manson and then trading Girard for a younger, more long-term solution at 2C. Marty Necas’s name is out there, or a player of comparable age, skill, and upside. I’m not necessarily advocating for that plan, but I think it’s a possibility.</div></div>
I agree that this is the general concept they will probably go for, but I don't think it makes sense to go for a long-term solution at 2C because I think they expect Newhook to be the long term answer there. I think it makes more sense to find some sort of stop gap at a reasonable price for the next 1-3 years. They may need to trade Girard next year depending on how much it'll cost to extend Mack/Byram/Newhook but I don't think there's any downside in waiting a year as Girard will have a chance to have a bounce-back year and potentially increase his value. I'd love for them to extend Manson too, mostly because they gave up a good price to get him but need to be smart and can't overpay. I've been wondering if Compher is a potential guy to trade for futures to free up some money especially because I think there's a good chance they can't afford to resign him next year.

Cheaper goalies can afford Kadri now
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tstrauss16</b></div><div>Oof that’s gonna be tough next year. Girard is gone for sure at that point and after Mack, you’re left with like $18.5M to sign 10-11 guys.</div></div>
Well if you look at the long-term outlook it's about $24 million in cap space, you figure about 11 of that goes to Mack, and about 8-9 to Byram/Newhook, which leaves you with 5-6 to sign a few bottom 6 guys and a couple bottom pairing d, which shouldn't cost a ton especially cause you're hoping guys like Ranta/Olausson/Foudy can slide into that bottom 6 on ELCs. But if that's not enough you can trade Girard and should get a good return for him with hopefully some cheap talent.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Anus_McLeod</b></div><div>I did that trade more to illustrate that they <strong>could</strong> move Compher and this is likely around what they'd get. If they don't need to move him, they won't. I'm pretty sure they'll move Compher before they move Girard if it's cap they need.</div></div>
I agree, they may need to move Girard next year to make MacKinnon/Newhook/Byram work, but why do it a year early when he's coming off an injury and a down year due to injury? He should raise his value this year and still has a lot of term left, gives you a better shot at winning, and it'll get you a year closer to Behrens being ready.

I think this is generally what they do, with the exception of letting Burakovsky go and use some of that money for a 2C. I know DNVR has mentioned they're interested in Copp, but not sure if they'd want to do that much term that he'll probably want. Otherwise I think you see if you can get Giroux on a short term deal or look at a Stastny. If things are tight next summer to sign Mack/Byram/Newhook then I think a Girard trade is the most obvious.

Your contract values are really close (imo). My critiques would be (1) I don't think Manson does only 3 years, (2) Copp is probably a bit low, and (3) Sturm is probably gone unless they offer him more. Good job though.</div></div>
Good points, I changed the 2nd to a 3rd, could do a mid-tier prospect instead for a team in a similar situation. Bumped up Copp, Nuke, and Kuemper's contracts. Think there's still enough to do Mack/Byram/Newhook next summer but could trade Girard then if they need to make room and should get a pretty good return.

With the year he had though, he'll be looking for a 6-yr deal in the $8m - 9m range, which we can't afford with Mack's deal coming up next year. As for Kuemper, I can't see them letting him walk. Was he amazing? Hell no, but if we can lock him down for $4m - 4.5m as a result? I'm game.</div></div>
Everyone wanting to get rid of Kuemper seems to not realize how much worse the other goaltending options would be. He was fantastic in the regular season and I really think a lot of his postseason struggles stemmed from the eye injury. He was pretty good in the cup final outside of a few softies.

Yeah I guess the D pairings won't matter too much because Bednar likes to mix and match situationally. I think there's a good chance Seattle takes Compher or Donskoi, I'd leave them both exposed as well as Graves. You don't want to lose one of them but you're gonna lose a good player and might as well shed some cap if you have to. Would probably prefer one of the forwards go so there's a spot available for Bowers.

I doubt they trade him before the season, but if you get into the season and Byram earns that spot and keeps Cole as a 7D, especially when you have Timmins as an 8th D wouldn't it make sense to see if you can get something decent for Cole since he's just gonna walk this offseason anyways?

Minimal movement until 2022
I think this is gonna be the Avs best team in this window. They'll have MacKinnon/Kadri/Newhook/Bowers potentially down the middle (probably let Kadri go after that if Newhook looks like he's ready to be a 2C) and it'll be the last year before they have to sign Kaut/Byram/Bowers and two years until they'll have to sign MacKinnon and potentially Newhook if they play him in the playoffs next year.

If they're in a playoff run next year and think Newhook could help them win a Stanley Cup, I don't think Sakic is going to be too worried about making the 2023 cap work. You only get so many shots at it

Colorado will be fine cap-wise in 2021 and 2022, given that some contracts like Cole and Calvert come off the books. It's in 2023 when Mackinnon and Byram need to be resigned that there will be a cap crunch, but even then Johnson, Compher, Donskoi, reach UFA which is a lot of cap space opened. I'd argue that it would be first in 2024 that we feel the cap crunch for real as that's when Newhook will be moving off his ELC.</div></div>
I think there's a good chance they burn the first year of that ELC next year for the playoffs.

That made me laugh so thanks for that.
Maybe a little low on nichushkin and timmins if you think he will be top 4 by then. Also why only one year for grubauer? I don’t think he will take a 1 year deal even after considering his injury issues. Otherwise this is fine and I think it’s safe to say that you are not an idiot. 😂</div></div>
Honestly it was just kind of a placeholder for Grubauer, I honestly think the ideal situation would be for Francouz to look good enough to take over as a starter by then and have either Annunen or Warner look ready to at least be NHL backups. More likely for Werner as this is probably going to be Annunen's first year in North America and I'm guessing will need at least a year in the AHL. Goalies are so unpredictable though, I honestly feel like goaltending has become such a science these days that there's not much difference between good starters and good backups and it's probably not worth spending a ton of your cap on.
