High end roster players with 1 year until UFA, not RFA's or players already signed long term.
Even if you assume any pending UFA will sign, there's a big difference between Huberdeau @ $10M until his late 30's and Thomas @ $8M until his early 30's.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>The_Rocket</b></div><div>the tkachuk trade was widely viewed as a win for calgary at the time. hubderdeau having an unprecedented drop off was nearly impossible to see coming.</div></div>
Not a win on its own, but because it made the best out of a bad situation.
Calgary got 2 pending UFA's and were lucky(:-/) to be able to convince them to sign extensions.
They easily could have walked away with only a protected 1st and a middling prospect.
If you're comparing to the Tkachuk trade your proposals are flawed because you're targeting younger core players under contract or team control. That makes it a bad comp.

What can we expect for next year
If we're in the playoff picture we don't move Savard next year.
If we don't pick up a bonafide top 6 forward, we aren't likely to make the playoffs.
I'd say we either trade Savard now and continue development, or we keep him, add a forward, and start pushing.
Dach coming back gets us close, but we still need a little more and we'll be derailed again if we don't have the top 6 depth to sustain a player missing some games.
We also need at least one of our young D to take a leap to have a solid 2nd pairing at least.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy316</b></div><div>Faksa for Brandon Tanev they dont lose Physicality in the exchange and get a better competitor
DAL has multiple Centers stuffed on Wing due to lack of Wingers
I dont see how a Center for Center exchange helped them or makes them better in any way at all whatsoever.
It'd be like MTL trading Jake Allen for Antti Raanta and paying to do it
I love Jake but he cant provide the consistency Faksa can as a Bottom 6 Bulk Faceoffs Grit Checking Power Center.
He's got his own niche role but for a team as Physical as DAL he makes no sense at all , he'd get hurt in a Practice there.
Evans in SEA however makes a ton of sense as there's lots of opportunity for him to play in that middle 6 role.
Jake's strength like Paul Byron is he can hang in there on any line during injuries for an extended period.
But he's most productive on 3rd line playing a defensive checking role and while he thrives at Center he's better offensively on the Wing as he can open up and use his Speed.
3 way Trade
B.Tanev to DAL
J.Evans to SEA with DAL 3rd round pick
Faksa to MTL with a DAL 5th round pick
MTL looks like it loses but a Bulk Faceoffs 4th liner is exactly what we need.
Fact that he's Czech should mean he and Arber will work closely together
Arber and his Family are very openly passionate about their Czech Heritage so Arber playing with a long tenured Czech Native should be good times.
Really though Evans is just kinda in the way with Dach's return next year Evans would be pushed back down to 4th i feel he's at a point where on a team like SEA he could lock down a 2b type role especially if Tatar re-signs as those 2 played a lot together when Danault took the slapshot to the face.
For DAL i think B.Tanev and his Brother bring Grit without Penalties ever 5 minutes, they play good Defensive Hockey but arent limited to that role and they dont have high Turnover rate and a great recovery rate ration by comparison. Its a lot of areas that would help Tighten up a Stack DAL roster</div></div>
I think you're under-appreciating the stability and consistency Evans brings for his cap hit. Moving him for a 3rd would be a tough decision. If you add Faksa's cap hit, that's an easy no.

KJ a HABS player
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BadaBing</b></div><div>He is in the dog house. Playing 4-5 min per game. Perfect timing for Hughes to pull that trigger and I think this gets it done or some other version of the same value</div></div>
There will be a new GM and it will be up to that GM to determine if Vincent is "his guy". If Vincent is out, the problem is solved.
If Vincent stays and KJ can't figure out how to work with him, then it's a possibility, I'm only saying the value has to be there.
Even IF they decide to move KJ, they'll want a pick around the top 10, but it would be more likely they build a package for an established center to retool quickly.
They've taken steps toward competing, so a rebuild package of futures likely isn't of interest.

Don't think that gets it done.
Columbus needs him more than us.
We'll at least have to give them our own 1st this year and if we're starting there we may as well consider all possibilities of moving the pick, where KJ may not be the best target available.

I understand the perspective, but Allen's value has completely tanked. We gain here simply by ending the 3-goalie rotation and getting Primeau some more playing time.
Even as a healthy scratch carrying an extra forward makes more sense than an extra goaltender.
Best case we play Ryjo and he gains value as trade bait next season (more than what we would receive for Allen).

Calgary is retooling and have a number of UFAs on defense.
With the exodus of pending free agents, it's not surprising they may want some younger players under team control for several years.
It's also not "giving up" a 1st, it's moving back a few spots because they are getting a 1st back. The actual difference won't be known until the draft, and the trade can wait until then.

My point was we need more than forwards. If we are rushing to improve, we will need defense as well.
I like our D corps, but they aren't ready yet. Give everyone more time to bake before throwing money and assets into big acquisitions.
I'm okay with 1 big forward add because it will help our other forwards establish themselves, but more is likely to derail or at least delay development.

Pick one top 6 forward to pursue. We need to put that forward with Dach and determine who works best with that combination from what we have, and then go out and get a player that fits if we don't have one.
If you add 3 guys at once you're taking a lot of risk of at least one not working out and preventing our own prospects from developing.
If you can get say, Reinhart and Hanifin, instead of 3 forwards, that would give us more of a playoff push.
We should be more patient, but it doesn't matter who is up front if our defense is going to keep getting younger. Until our D corps has gained more experience overall, we need to take the same slow approach for the forward group.

-- If it climbs/stays to #11 or higher, I believe it is sent to Montreal.
-- If Flames sell off at deadline, its probably a good bet to be in top-10 and stay with Calgary.
So what would be the 4D chess move for Kent Hughes to block a Calgary sell-off and get a 11-16 pick as opposed to possible later pick next year?
(probably nothing...but its just-for-fun hypothetical...so give us some wild takes)</div></div>
Montreal can only take Calgary's pick this year if it is between 20 and 32. If it's better, we get into next year with all the permutations.

Saw this as well and Anaheim makes out like bandits.
Granted, they are using 2/3 retention slots and taking back Ryjo, but that's contingent on Colorado paying for players they can't afford.
You can get a backup for less than a 3rd and $1M, or at least someone who is UFA to forego the retention for next year.
That just leaves Henrique for Ryjo. Should cost one less first and that 3rd can go to 3rd party retention on Henrique.

I'm not even factoring Allen into the equation. His value has all but tanked with his recent performance.
The 1st is the issue. We could afford to move Kovacevic and a lower pick for Turcotte if LA was interested, but 1sts should be reserved for bonafide top of the lineup players at this stage, not hopefuls.
If that can't be managed, draft the BPA and hope for a better player down the road, or at least someone you can flip after some development that hasn't been derailed by injuries and covid interruptions.

We're past the point of spending 1sts for "maybes".
Our next moves need to be trading surplus D and/or picks for more established forwards that are young enough that we can get ~5 years out of them.
Moving out players not meeting expectations and with higher cap hits will be a work in progress, but once the old vets are gone and the current group has gained some experience, then we can look at players like Turcotte.
We need a solid group to bring young players into, in order to give them the best chance of success. We don't have that yet.

A non-playoff team isn't trading for a pending UFA. They can wait and sign him after the season, especially if it means taking on an unwanted defense contract in the process.

Nils Lundkvist is the most recent young RHD for picks trade I can think of and brought a 1st and 4th.
IF Montreal were to trade Barron for pick(s), it should be for a 1st at a minimum.
There are a lot of fans who are not on board with proper rebuild and development, that have no patience for grooming a young player into an effective NHLer over time.
They might be willing to throw away any player not having an immediate impact in order to rush someone else into that spot (Mailloux and Reinbacher) and those will be the same fans who complain when we trade a promising young defenseman for the next Gomez or Drouin, while that defender goes on to realize their potential elsewhere.

The players going back to Montreal have no value to them.
If you need to send contracts back, pick any 2.
You might get Savard and Kovacevic for the 1st and 3rd, but you won't get a 2nd back and I doubt they send two non-rental defensemen to a division rival.
