No "offense only" players have ~55% defensive deployment at even strength and are top 30 for short handed TOI per game.
Nor are any defensemen that are top 15 in points considered "cap dumps" any more (regardless of what they may have been before).
Monahan was a cap dump at one time. Of course Winnipeg has no use for him and certainly wouldn't give up a 1st.
A top pairing defenseman averaging over 25 minutes a game playing in all situations for under $5M being a "worse contract" than a 3rd pairing defender at a shade under $6M is quite the statement.
That's 3 strikes, you're out.

That's why he shouldn't have been in the game. He's going to cause trouble and someone is going to go after him.

It does mean the tissue around the eyes is compromised and you can get serious eye injuries that way.
Not defending Rempe btw. He earns what he gets.

It's pretty low for Reaves to try to get a fight with a guy sporting two black eyes.
I wouldn't have even put Rempe in that game.
The way he is expected to play means he could be forced into a bad situation. Players aren't going to take it easy on him because he's injured, especially if he's running around throwing the body.

Rebuild Over
I'd be hesitant to move that Calgary pick.
If Florida is a lottery team next season we could get Calgary's pick in the 2nd-10th range. (If I have it correctly, but however slim, that pick has a chance to be high in 25 or 26.)
Florida is facing a possible turnover of nearly half their roster while Calgary is selling off players. I wouldn't discount that being a 1st + 3rd/4th or top 10 pick at this point.

At very best he plays on the third line till Arvidsson comes back then gets demoted to the fourth line until Grunstrom comes back then he's a healthy scratch the rest of his time with the Kings. So he might get 15-20 games played with the Kings and two years of 3.4m only playing a handful of games is too much for any team to take on so the price will have to be less with retention on his contract if you want to make a trade with the Kings involving Armia.</div></div>
It would likely have to be a 4th in order to get the retention, but even if you're okay with that the 4th would have to go to a 3rd party.
Montreal would get nothing in return in that scenario (which is fine, it would just be to send him to a better situation) but they aren't using their limited retention spots on a 4th.

Levshunov, Yakemchuk, and Parekh (iirc) are all projected RHD in the top 10. (Obviously some rankings will differ and I haven't looked at all of them.)
There's more variation in the forwards, but they would be practically guaranteed at least one of those 3.

I believe the idea of acquiring Montreal's 1st in a Zegras trade, would have Anaheim taking a RHD in addition to a Lindstrom (or similar) combined with their own pick. The MTL pick may be the defenseman instead and there's a better chance of a D being available with whichever ends up being the later pick.

It is something with the potential for abuse even if the intent isn't there in this situation.
You can't "keep" your own UFA's at less than market value this way.
In spirit, it is fine. There was obviously no intent to circumvent the cap here. Ottawa expected to contend and NY didn't expect Tarasenko to be available.
The problem is that the rules have to apply regardless of whether the motives were pure, otherwise other teams can use it as precedent for "shadier" transactions.

Could they still get Pettersson if negotiations fall apart
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vancity2196</b></div><div>The Carolina-Vancouver trade is ridiculous :veryangry
Petey is off-limits.</div></div>
Vancouver was considering trading him to Carolina (or were using it as a catalyst to open contract negotiations again).
That suggests he isn't as off-limits as you would think. Management is serious about wanting a commitment from him now, likely to be able to project cap space for any moves beyond a rental they may consider at the current deadline.
If Pettersson doesn't sign by the deadline, it may hurt Vancouver's chances to add for a run this year. (As an example, maybe they are trying to see if they can fit a Guentzel extension instead of going after a rental.)
It's unlikely he gets moved given where Vancouver is at currently, but if he refuses to extend they may be less aggressive at the deadline and trade him in the off-season.
As for whether the Canes could still get Pettersson if negotiations don't pan out, it's possible, but once Pettersson's availability is confirmed there may be higher offers sent in from other teams.

Canes and Canucks had trade talks over Pettersson.
Canucks had to seriously consider and elected to attempt getting a contract signed instead.
Faced with the possibility of being traded, Pettersson has allowed contract negotiations to resume instead of waiting until the off season.
Very interesting information.
First, Pettersson could be available and teams will now make serious pitches for him (if they weren't already). Knowing the possibility was close to consideration, there could be a bidding war.
Still think they sign him if at all possible, but it looks like Vancouver is applying pressure to get it done before the deadline and forcing his hand.

Splashing Cash
I'd like to see Anderson try to shorten his stick a couple inches. Get lower for playing the puck and make it easier to handle in tight.
Losing a little reach should also naturally encourage getting in close with the body.
He can skate a circle or drive the net while protecting the puck out wide, but when he's shooting he has less aim control and difficulty with passes in close.
I'm no expert. I have to assume somebody more knowledgable then me has already gone through some of these ideas with him and they were rejected (players are picky/touchy about their gear), but I really think it is something he should try, even if just in practice over the offseason. At this point, what could it hurt?
I'd also like someone to remind him that he's a powerful, big bodied skater. He doesn't need to be fancy.
Get the puck. Get the puck to the net. If anyone tries to stop you from doing either of those things, plow through them.
If he's willing to change the way he plays and try different ways to be effective, we can afford to be a little patient.
The same goes for Gallagher. He needs to change the way he plays and try different ways to be effective.
Stop trying to stick handle in traffic. Stop trying to play at a pace that exceeds your physical ability.
Slow it down, move the puck, and get your linemates involved.
It hurts me to watch him hunched over and out of breath 20 seconds into a shift, while he tries to race defenders down ice, inevitably gets surrounded, and ties himself into knots trying to keep control of the puck in a mess of bodies and sticks.

As much as I'd like to see a super skilled player like Zegras on my favorite team, you can't get away from the fact that he's already 5 years closer to his 30s than a top 5 pick from the 2024 draft. Plus the Habs aren't one top 6 forward away from contention. Its too soon to trade high draft capital for established players.</div></div>
Like I said, that's a valid perspective, but he's the right age to fit in with our current core, while the next guy may not even be here for a couple of years.
The biggest obstacle for us is time. Our defense simply isn't going to be experienced enough for a couple of years. We could do something like sign Montour to get a bump on the back end as well, but Zegras will still only be mid 20's when our defense should be ready, so it's not a loss.

That's a valid stance. I'm in favor of patience as well. The patience of the fanbase may not be on par with our own however.
IF we were to attempt to move faster, this is one move which might make sense.
Separating Caufield and Suzuki is a way to add another facet to our attack. With Slafkovsky and Suzuki developing some chemistry and Slaf gaining confidence to shoot more, another playermaker to feed Caufield will give us multiple offensive threats in the top 6. One of those lines is going to benefit from better matchups on any given night.
Fact is that this is a strong defense draft and that's the last thing we need. There's a good chance the forwards worth drafting in the top 10 are gone before our selection, in which case we would be reaching instead of taking the BPA. Now this wouldn't happen before the draft order is determined anyway, so we could decide to hold the pick still. Using it to acquire Zegras might not work in a different year, but I think it does this particular season if we are drafting outside the top 5.
I'm not even personally entirely sold on Zegras and would be okay with a different target.
I'm merely suggesting that the situation at this time makes a move for a forward a logical next step.

That's the discrepancy. He IS special. You may not value those traits highly, but he does have a rare combination of attributes as a big, strong, enforcer type, that can also play, and he may have one of the hardest shots in the league. Even if he's average in every other area, he is still "special".
Don't forget, he's played less than 100 games. There's still room for him to improve. If he learns to use his size more effectively and employ his shot, he could develop into a 2nd pairing version of Weber.

There's still some hope for Anderson. I'm not betting on it, but if he can finish the season healthy, put some work in the off season, and find some chemistry in camp to get off on the right foot, he may still be able to contribute.
That's the best we can hope for right now. No need to jump in to retention and/or another bad contract. We should probably move him if there's an opportunity to be free and clear off his contract, but no half measures.
