The shake up that can make sense
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>You may have no choice but I don't see TO being at all a good trading partner. Nylander will sign with the leafs or test the open market. Marner won't resign there either. So why would Calgary trade for one of them only to see them leave as well. If you have to trade Lindholm and Hanafin and Toffoli it will be either at the deadline for futures or for younger players with upside.</div></div>
Maybe I don’t have the right read in what Calgary would want to do but what I would consider their core is a bit older so are they going for a rebuild with those guys on the cap sheet for many years? Feels more like a retool, of course this has to assume nylander would sign there, if he would I think that’s a great get for Calgary

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shaquille_Oatmeal</b></div><div>Calgary isn't doing that and neither is Arizona. Getting rid of Murray's contract will almost cost a 1st round pick by it self. Are you getting Crouse and Schmaltz for a late 1st round pick + Robertson? Not even close.</div></div>
Matt Murray who needed a third and a 7th to be traded last season with 2 years in his deal, now needs a first to dump it? Mrazek with similar cap hit and 2 years cost moving back like 10 spots in the draft
Value may still be low yes but it’s not because Murray is there.

I don’t get why Leaf fans are running him out of town, but other teams fans thinking they can get him for a late round pick or salary retained is hilarious</div></div>
Ya I was about to reply and say it’s crazy that he had a rough time in one series so now he’s worth nothing. Brodie and McCabe together didn’t allow one 5 on 5 goal against Tampa.
For me, not trying to run him out of town, would just prefer to go after orlov. Bit of asset management too if you can get some picks for Brodie and bring in orlov

He's 1C making less than 5M, that would be in such high demand around the league. Why would Nylander be any more inclined to sign an extension than Lindholm?
You can't compete with a player of Kadri's caliber as your 1C</div></div>
I get that. Usually have to assume a few facts to make these. Was just going with that Calgary would want to trade Lindholm for a 40 goal guy more than multiple pieces in return. And ya gotta assume nylander would sign there. I get it makes them weaker at centre but if they are forced to trade Lindholm that’s going to happen no matter what.
Nylander with Huberdeau would be pretty lethal I think.

Even if they get an extension done with Nylander, Byram has shown a lot for a 21 year old who is going to be on a cheap bridge deal, and then on a cheaper deal than Nylander is going to get long term after the bridge. The amount of control the Avs have on a 21 year old top 4 d with a lot of upside is just too valuable. I know it sounds weird if youre just looking at production but there is a lot more to value than that.
Avs are going to bridge Byram and fill out their roster with contracts that wont interfere with the possibility of bringing Landy back next year and until they know for sure if he can come back or not, then make decisions longer term to replace him.</div></div>
Nah it does make sense! With the cap situation it’s a tough move for them to make.

I understand the cap is tight but with Landy out this year it’s easy for them to fit Nylander, and if the cap goes up like it’s supposed to they can most likely fit an extension for him but it’s not going to be easy.
Toews for nylander cap wise long term makes more sense but I assume Avs want to keep Toews as he’s more important to a cup contender this coming season.

I get that, but if they feel like they can’t get him resigned, Marner makes sense for a team still wanting to be a cup contender. Even though they could run into the same issue with Marner next summer

Just thinking about this one, I think 1 for 1 is the fair deal. In a scenario where they have trouble signing Aho, Marner would be the best player they could get in return.
For Toronto, they get some extra cap space this year but I think would need to be able to extend Aho or this could be a waste.

So all I was trying to point out is that teams would trade some prospects and picks for a 100 point selke nominee if they like that player. Ya they rather him have more term but 2 years is workable and there’s a chance at an extension. Every trade has risks. If Detroit rather keep their prospects and keep drafting that’s cool, they can do that, not every prospect pans out tho. Basically saying that they wouldn’t trade one prospect for a top player in the league doesn’t make much sense. I’m not sure what the price would be but generally teams pay multiple picks/prospects in a deal like this.
Ya I’m a leafs fan, at the end of the day no one here knows what players could be traded and what the price could be. We are shocked by trade returns all the time.

For Nylander at 3mill they can easily get more than ROR or Bertuzzi

As if we look at Arizona's timeline to compete 2026 is probs best as they dont got a lot to show rn</div></div>
I think Keller should be one of the top targets for the leafs, prefer Marner traded to get the assets to give Arizona for Keller. Basically a 3 team trade.
Leafs wouldn’t move knies, they need the cheap production, but Marner for prospects and picks and then flip a lot of that to Arizona? I like it.

Sieder and Raymond only have 1 year til RFA, better trade them now before they could hold out and demand a trade.
Seriously, sorry for being dramatic but I get tired of seeing the “no no no we can’t trade that for player X, he only had 2 years left!!” He’s not going to fall off the face of the earth in 2 years, work out a contract extension or trade him to get some assets back if it doesn’t work out.
Pretty sure any team that is comfortable with the cap hit would trade a late top 10 pick for Marner. Debrincat went for number 7 and 39 and a third. He had 2 years of control.

Marner to Detroit
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DeadWingsv2</b></div><div>Marner makes way too much. Even though he's very good, I think these finals are showing that depth and quality are worth more than super high paid players. There isn't a single team left with a player making MORE than 10m a year and all of those teams, that player is their highest paid. Furthermore, the assets it would take to get him, are a double hit. Detroit needs to just keep building through the draft and if they can add a superstar that makes less than 10m in a trade that makes sense, sure, but otherwise, I'd MUCH rather have two VERY good players making 5m...</div></div>
So you can win with a guy making 10 million but not 10.9? Lol. I think Detroit be just fine with marners cap hit because Larkin is at 8.7. Seider will get a high number but that’s on defence so things are more spread out. Torontos problem has always been half the cap on 4 forwards. They bet that those 4 guys could deliver, seems like they can’t together but Marner could absolutely be a force on a different team in the playoffs. You can win with him, just not sure the leafs can.
Detroit seems in good position to resign him too and good chance he would like it there.
As for the trade cost, hard to say but Detroit has the prospects and picks to give Toronto a nice package, they might have to pay a little more for Toronto to deal him in division. I think it’s one of the more likely destinations.

My first response to the feedback said it would take top prospects for Marner but totally cool if Columbus wouldn’t want to do it? That’s what I meant by it’s just an idea man. Can’t afford to extend nylander for probably 2 million or so more than he makes now but can bring in Wilson, bertuzzi and Konecny?
They can afford it, only one year of JT with the matthews and nylander extensions, they can make it work if they want too.
No trades they would make this summer are totally cap related, more about changing the core of the team. They can afford what they got now, just probably isn’t the way to go.
