<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>clark</b></div><div>actually the tanev trade seems like one of the few reasonable tanev trades posted. though after the harmonic trade, and what he returned, I'm sure the Canucks would want more. why trade bozak for kruger and retain too? leafs</div></div>
The Kruger trade is just to provide a bridge for Gauthier to recover from his leg injury before he assumes 4th line role and lets us shift Nylander to center. Doesn't have to happen at the start of the year and could be more of a trade deadline acquisition. I know some people think Nylander is going to be on the wing long-term but I would note that on the Marlies, Nylander performed much better once he switch to center and I think he did a good job in 2015 in the position as well. Given the cap situation I don't think we can afford to bring Bozak back long-term. The return could be higher in terms of the pick Chicago gives for the cap relief.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NateElder12</b></div><div>i'm interested to see what Leafs fans think of that trade. Kapanen seems to be a hot button topic when he's in trades.</div></div>
From a Leafs perspective I don't see it happening. Kapanen is probably the Leafs best prospect not in the NHL and should be up for a full time job next year while still being cost controlled. We already traded Harrington away once and he is a part time NHL at best so I don't see the attraction from the Leafs perspective to have him as the +.
I appreciate that you did at least take the Leafs need for a RHD but with only two years left and 30 years old I think Johnson is at the end of is prime years. When I look at his advanced stats he looks to be a 3/4 guy. I think we would want to try and get a 2/3 guy or at least a solid 4 (who is younger) if we traded Kapanen, and particularly someone who is more on the defensive side of the game.
Maybe something could work around JVR with some retention on the Leafs part (or at least I think that gets closer to fair value) for Jack Johson but even then not sure if playing style wise there would be a good fit. I assume part of the attraction with Kapanen is the expansion exemption, is there another Leafs prospect that would interest you?

If he has an extension in place sure. Otherwise you aren't getting that return for him.

Again they may fair trades, but shouldn't the Leafs use the problems that other teams are going to have protecting all their Dmen, instead of just making lateral trades.</div></div>
That's what I thought I was doing with Min. Brodin is on a great contract for a longer period than JVR. Also JVR has been brutal recently.
Trouba was more about taking advantage of the fact that they are overloaded on the right.

Fair enough I would say that Montour given his position and Kapanen's injury favours Toronto. Silverberg is cost controlled and is a top-line RW at the moment but JVR is better and a needed position for them LW so advantage Anaheim. I figured the Draft pick would be required to pry a cost controlled young D, however you could top-3 protect it as I'm assuming its not a top-10 pick.

Reinhart is a natural centre, he played wing in Buffalo because they have O'Reilly and Eichel and it was his rookie season. I think Reinhart is pretty good but not sure what the right balance would be. I think the price would be steep as he had strong rookie debut and was the 2nd overall pick.</i></div></div>
Reinhart is a center but if I remember correctly there was talk of him being a wing in the NHL when he was drafted. When you are giving 1st overall + for and second overall pick the plus needs to be on the other side. I don't think Reinhart and the player you get at 8 given the drop off in the draft is greater than the number 1 pick that gets you a potential franchise center. In Reinhart's year nobody was putting the franchise tag on him.

Given up a 2nd round pick and retaining salary on Greening just to pay Shaw similar money if not more to fill a similar roll seems like a huge step back for the Leafs. If we are helping you with your cap situation we would need to be compensated beyond just Shaw.
Note I say this knowing that Shaw is a good player but in the cap would you need to be underpaying your bottom six players so you can overpay your top six.

How valuable is Shaw on a $3 to $4 million contract? Because that is what you are going to have to pay him. I think it would be a lot to pay him vs. a similar player on an ELC if Toronto was trying to avoid the Cap hell that Chicago is going through now.

Leafs - Stamkos and Second overall
Thanks for the feedback. Just some background on the rational with the line-up
Zaitsev was above the ELC more just to keep his potential salary / bonuses in mind so they didn't overrun the cap.
Vesey may not come but this was just potential. I would argue that Brown's stat line in the AHL would make him a playmaking winger (<a href="http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=130232" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=130232</a>).
As for Patrik playing on his off wing from the highlight packs from Liiga that seems to be his normal position.
Sosh with Nylander given that's who they've had him line up with in the AHL playoffs (part of the time).

Blackhawks ideas
Don't disagree with the value per say but does it really make sense for a young rebuilding team to give up to controllable cheap assets for Shaw, who while controllable will likely be more expensive than both contracts combined from a Leafs perspective?
If you look at what Chicago has done to be successful all this time, it has been trading away RFAs that were going to make more than they are worth to the team for prospects. It seems to mean that Leafs Management would like to see what they've got in Kapanen and Hyman before moving them at worst you would think that Hyman would end up being a similar player depth wise to Andrew Shaw, while being much cheaper and under control for that much longer.

Think the trade is good for both teams
You thought wrong. While Shaw is a glue guy and a great player there is a reason why the Leafs shouldn't take on Salary for him, particularly when he will likely want a hefty raise. The trade reminds me of the Dave Bolland deal but we give up a ton more. JVR should net the Leafs a lot more than that.

I would highly doubt that Toronto does that Trade, particularly giving up JVR for an older player on a worse contract.

Buying out Jared Cowen gives them ~700k in cap relief on top of the relief from the Bickell trade. Given that Panarin has hit his schedule 2 bonuses they are going to need the space. In buying out Cowen you get 700k in cap relief plus $3 million for Bickell (assuming he is going to be buried in the AHL next year). Total cap relief is ~3.7 million, which I think is worth a 3rd and a 4th.

Post Kadri and Rielly
Depends on if he only wants to be directly in Winnipeg. If that's the only trade he will accept I would agree. I figured people talk about Edmonton as being a potential target but the flight time is somewhat simiilar. Edmonton for example 2 hour flight. Toronto 2.5 hour flight. New York currently 5 hour flight.

Sorry, didn't clarify, Hunwick would be a trade deadline deal. Other thing I've been pondering is if we could somehow get Kerby Rychel out of Columbus if we offered them some right wing prospects and took Tyutin for some cap relief.

There is a good change the Leafs will trade Cowan to cap strapped team. Due to salary quirks, Bickell's buyout is 1m a year for 2 years. Cowan's is a salary credit of 650,000 in year one and a hit of 750,000 in year two.
Agree with PAP will get a higher salary from the Leafs or someone.</i></div></div>
In terms of PAP, its more just a veteran presence on the top line (though I suppose at this point Kadri could be considered that). What do people think of Michalek to show case from a deadline trade? I was worried that he looks like he's lost a step in recent games though.
