Leafs can't afford Stamkos

Créé par: austinjackson
Équipe: 2016-17 Maple Leafs de Toronto
Date de création initiale: 21 juin 2016
Publié: 21 juin 2016
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Still need to sign 2 more D with only around $8.5M in cap space. Stamkos is going to want 10M or more on his own. Can't see it working without unloading some of the big contracts

I think you are absolutely correct. It would mean moving JVR, Bozak or Bernier. Not that I oppose those moves so much. ELC contracts come up soon in a few years, and maybe Matthews, Nylander and Marner are stars that will demand big money. So we might be saying in 3 or 4 years.....do the Leafs really need Stamkos? And do they really need him now?
Early July we will know what the Leaf management think. IMO....either Carolina or Arizona. The Leafs aren't really interested.

Robidas will be LTIR as well Lups if not he will be bought out. Bernier will be traded or bought out. Almost 0 chance Holland is resigned he isn't need his rights will be traded or signed the an offer sheet or Europe.

Isn't $2.5 million a lot for a fourth line winger?

Robidas will be in LTIR next year....so he doesn't count against the cap....Zaitsev and Carrick will both be on the team and both are D....Bozak is most likey moved and same with Bernier....There is plent of cash for Stamkos...You clearly haven't done any homework lol

They are going to have plenty of cap space as they have a ton of contracts that are easy to get rid of. Bernier, Bozak, and Holland are most likely to be traded. Robidas will be on the LTIR and won't count against cap. Michalek, Leich, Greening, and Lupul all possible buyout victims. That leaves around $20mil in cap space which should be enough to sign Stamkos, if they want, as well as some 4th line and depth forwards.

At present they definitely don't have enough cap room however I don't think it would be too hard to create it if they wanted to. I think the leafs are in a great spot regardless of whether they go after Stamkos or not. Next off season they have a lot of salary coming off the cap and there should be some good players available by teams who can't afford to re-sign or can't protect them. Probably better off stockpiling assets they can convert to draft picks at the deadline...then using those picks to move for other "Andersen's" next year.

I think I'll be happy either way as Stamkos would be a great long term piece to add but the cap flexibility moving forward will also be nice
