Sujet: (BUF/CHI) - Nylander for Jokiharju
Fair deal.

Chicago gets a young skilled forward who can add scoring depth, potentially ready to have a break out year. Buffalo gets a young skilled dman who can add more offense from the back end, potentially ready to be more than a depth option (too bad Buffalo has so many d roster spots taken up by big contract plugs). Buffalo has a habit of signing fa's or trading for all their forward scoring depth, so it leaves little room for Nylander to find a consistent home their. I'm guessing Jokiharju was not meshing well with the coaches or team in Chicago (another Finn that can't speak good English perhaps?) and they also have a stud rhd man in the pipes that will play the same role. As much as a potential top 4 offensive rhd is great to have for being a good team, teams also need more balanced lineups with scoring depth to succeed in this league.

I disagree about him "trending down" too. The last 2 seasons he has scored at about a 0.5PPG rate (while adjusting to 2 different teams play style in the last 2 season), compared to his career average of 0.58PPG. You are using his career year (58 points in 16-17) as a baseline and saying he has been "steadily producing less and less" the last 2 years. For the majority of his career he has been in the 40-50 point range when he plays a full season, and the last 2 years he was on pace for his point totals to fall in that range even when he has had to adjust to new teams so often.

Its also funny how you say he barely hit 10 goals last season when he had 13G in 58GP (0.224G/GP), while his career average is 0.204G/GP</div></div>

Two years removed from playing at his top level. 28 isn't young anymore in this league; it's basically the new 32. Ya it's only a 2 year deal but I still think they'll regret it by next season.

Yes, Dubass improved his team next year with the kadri trade, but beyond next year there is no guarantee it is better, more likely even. He lost everyother trade though because he was desperate to shed salary. Prospects and recent draft picks are meaningless to bring up in discussion as none have proven anything at the nhl level yet; it is only your biases that shine through in such arguments.

Overall though, Dubass made space for Marner (apparently, still don't quite understand how there is more than 9mil in space left) while filling the holes left by salary dumps with players that may be downgrades, but at least are new faces (crazy to keep trying to win with the same team of losers).

There has been plenty of bad contracts handed out in the last decade and there will be more in the next decade. Lucic did better than Neal last year, so there's another bad contract. But at any rate, it gets fairly boring and annoying to see the same posts everything the oilers do something, regardless of how small a thing it is.

Holland really hasn't done anything bad yet. He's cleaning up past mistakes and trying to put together a roster that can hopefully be competitive next year. Meanwhile, gms that have had more than a few months to make their teams better are out and about putting their teams in cap hell and trading first round picks to open cap space.

Not bad but not great. People here (are leaf fans really people?) are over exaggerating this deal just a bit. Is it slight too high and 1 year too long? Ya, maybe. He did just put up 20+ goal season and everyone else that did that is getting 3mil+ at 4 years+, so looks good there. He is also the kind of player that plays his role no matter where he's put in the lineup; he just goes out there and does his job. He started on a pto, played bottom 6 in preseason and earned a min contract, then played 4th line to start the season and did all the little things right, earning more minutes which lead to goals and even more minutes. He's the kind of vet the oilers need in their forward group right now.

Id take him at this contract over Conolly, Panik, or any of the other 2.5mil+ rw goal scorer that was signed today.

Somebody might be willing to move down for Miller, as he is a capable top 4 dman. Eakin is a good 3rd line center/utility player and isn't overpaid, so some teams might be interested in him. Haula...hard to say as he just had a big knee injury, but before that he was probably the best value forward in the league, so he might still get people interested, especially given his low cap hit. I won't bother to try and guess the inner workings of an NHL gm's mind; you tend to see things that nobody was predicting every year, so sitting here and pretending like we can judge which teams are likely to move down for the above players is near pointless. All I know is that Vegas needs cap space and it wouldn't hurt for them to pick up a really good prospect given what they've let go this past season (not to mention the picks given for Tatar in 2017-18), so moving up makes sense. But, they also might work trades with later picks too; no reason to force a first rnd pick trade if freeing cap space is your only real goal.

I'm with CD282, Lucic should be kept in Edmonton for now. Russel and/or Sekera should be moved this summer instead. Jones, Bear, and Lagesson are all needing ice time in the NHL so they can improve their games, but the Oilers have too many dmen currently signed, making it hard to give them all adequate time. So going off what others said for a Lucic trade, I'd suggest working one of them into a "move down" trade; send Russel/Sekera + 8th to a team that wants to move up and is also in need of more capable veteran dmen that can play 20min a game if needed. Maybe even get back a forward that has a similar contract (2-4mil) to help fill out the Oilers depth up front.

Lucic will need to be dealt with before the Seattle expansion draft, but might as well give him another season to see if he can bounce back. There's been rumors about a possible Lucic for Eriksson (Van) trade, but this only makes sense if Edmonton can do it without giving up a valuable pick/prospect. If Van is demanding a 2nd rnd pick or a prospect like Benson, then this is obviously a terrible idea; Edmonton needs all the low salary young talent they can get right now.

Fair point. But again, if Ottawa isn't prepared to hand out such large contracts (think of what it does to all the other smaller contracts....now everybody wants a bit more), then they do the right thing by bringing in players that other teams shouldn't be dealing. I feel Brannstrom is one of those players; really the only good d prospect in Vegas's young organization. But ya, Stone is a solid forward to have right now, and probably for another few years at the very least. What does he sign for next season though? I could easily see him go after 8mil at least, something like Wheeler's deal, but I could also see him go even higher depending on how well he adds to Vegas in a playoff run. Does Vegas get him though? What if they don't even make the playoffs, and Stone doesn't gel well during this short time frame? Or they do make it but get tossed out quick and people point fingers at Stone for "not doing enough". Maybe he signs somewhere else that seem to have more odds of being a contender.

Sujet: (PHI/NSH) - Simmonds for Hartman and 2020 conditional 4th round pick
Huh, I see this as a win for the Flyers as they get a younger player that has close to the same offensive output this season, but guess what? Hartman plays about 13min/game (3rd-4th line) and doesn't get any pp time either, while Simmonds has been getting 16min/game (2nd line) and pp time. Simmonds likely will look for the highest buyer come this offseason, so he is likely to play really hard for Nashville, but hard to say if he is capable of doing so in a helpful way (he does have a **** load of penalties this season, more so than Hartman, which is saying something). Hartman could very well be a much better offensive player in a bigger role with the Flyers and will likely be relatively cheap to sign longterm. Plus, they get a 4th rnd pick, and maybe it becomes a 3rd!!!

Sujet: (VAN/PIT) - Gudbranson for Pearson
Wow, another weird one. I guess Pitts really need a dman to fill some holes caused by injuries, but Gudbranson? I'm sure they could have traded Pearson to Edmonton for Russel, who is at least more useful and doesn't take as many penalties as Gudbranson (*_* )/`83pms`\( *_*) and a glorious -27 (but who really cares about +/- in our advanced stats age "\(~.~)/"). Don't even ask about his advanced stats. Vancouver gets another overpaid bottom 6 "vet", which I'm sure they're fine with. Speed on the back end (skating and puck movement), a youthful top 6 that is offensively potent, and a bottom 6 full of overpaid "vets" that will probably throw everything at a playoff run when it comes. But an aging roster in Pittsburgh isn't winning anytime soon utilizing Pearson in a bottom 6 role; they have enough players that can slot in there right now. I'm guessing they look at how the Islanders have been winning and realize they need more grit, strength, and size on their back end, simply to get out there against the Isles big 4th line (Martin, Clutterbuck, Cizikas); that is a mean line that isn't well contained in the East style of play.

Sujet: (MIN/NSH) - Granlund for Fiala
What an awfully weird trade. I voted "fair deal" because I'm just at a loss for words as to how odd this seems. But I'm willing to admit I don't watch either team regularly enough, to be a great judge of each player and how they were fitting a role on their respective teams. Everything tells me Granlund is about 2 Fiala's, at least, in trade value, so something must be missing from my assessment. But then again, being an oilers fan, you kind of get use to justifying these very same types of trades when all your young stars keep disappear, only to "reappear" as a great player on a much better managed team. Minnesota can't be this badly managed as well though, could they? It should be noted that Donato has been killing it for them, so they must feel he's capable of taking the role Granlund was playing, and now they need a solid 3rd line LW/utility type player (PK, PP, jump up in the top6 if need be). Fiala covers that base and is much younger than Granlund, as is Donato. Seems like being anchored by their big vet contracts is making them get crafty and try to build a competitor on the run. They've lost big so far in the Nino for Rask trade, but Rask is slightly cheaper and could still prove valuable in a role, so long as he plays the role well. I'm also not too certain Carolina understands how to value their players, as they've lost many good ones of late and their trades look really bad already.

So ya, fair deal I guess?

Got to give the win to Ottawa here. Stone is in his last year and will be making big money next season for long term. Nobody knows what kind of player he will be in a year or 2 or whatever. If Ottawa wasn't prepared to hand out that contract, then trading is their best option before he walks for nothing. They get a bottom 6/depth player in Lindberg, who they can likely easily resign cheap if they like what they see out of him in that role 9 (dynamic forward that can play wing and center). They get a great young d prospect in Brannstrom; somebody I'm really surprised to see Vegas give up so easily (though I'm sure they will sign Stone for 7+10mil/season or something). And they get a little 2nd rnd pick tacked on next year, which could always turn into another solid role player on a future Ottawa team that has many such players, and more elite prospects. Combine this with the Dzingle and Duchene asset drops/grabs, and they are looking pretty good going into the future, as far as potential goes. Everybody seems to forget that they blew up a team before like this, and turned it around in a decent time period. I expect them to do the same thing here. Maybe in a few years, when Boston is struggling to replace their vets, Toronto is regretting signing certain players and not trading them sooner to keep their prospect pool healthy (going for it all every season is easy way to lose future assets quick), Buffalo is likely to be right there as a top young team, Montreal and Florida are who knows where(?), and Tampa is still probably a power house; Ottawa should be able to start competing around then, and will likely follow a similar path they did with this past core of players and the other core of the players from even longer ago.

Say what you will about Ottawa and their treatment of good roster players that want money, they are still really good at drafting, developing, and trading for more picks/players to draft/develop, thus creating a cyclical system in harmony with the ebbs and flows of the Gary Bettman NHL. Some take this valuation of money over a person as a sign that Ottawa's owner must be really long in the Schnauzer (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), but there's another interpretation. If a player deems himself to be exuberantly more valuable than his team (gets 10mil+; worth 2 5-7mil players, even though 1v2 he loses), then he is signaling his intent to make it more difficult for the team to become better, because he wants more money. So who in this scenario is the really long Schnauzer? The owner, trying to keep his team competitive in a dishonest market, or the player, trying to make more money because he doesn't really care about his lowly teammates? There is always a middle ground in these contract negotiations, but if a player deems himself a star, with star like value, then he immediately becomes a problem on teams that can't afford stars.
