I wouldn't call him a Wizard. He's still very bad.

He's kept the team that same/made it a little worse.

He has also depleted the prospect depth and you guys have no 1st round pick next year. Not a good thing.

-got rid of two bad contracts
-Improved Defence right side
-Traded two prospects, one was average, Rosen was not trusted by babcock
-Had a really good draft
-colorado retained on barrie
-got kerfoot back somehow
Still has borgman, sandin, robertson, liljegren as D prospects
Good Fwd prospect group too
All in two weeks

I'd like Kadri on my team over Kerfoot, but considering cap situation for TOR, not a bad trade and signing.

"Got rid of two bad contracts"

Traded a 1st round pick and a 40 points winger for nothing.

Traded a 4th defensemen for a 5th defensemen. The 5th defensemen makes more than the 4th defensemen.
Traded a middle 6 winger in that trade ^

"Improved Defence right side"

Right Hand side did improve, but it's lateral since Gardiner is gone. The D-core as a whole is worse than last year.

"Traded two prospects, one was average, Rosen was not trusted by babcock"

Traded two prospect while not making the team better than last year.

"Had a really good draft"

That's bias since none of the players have played NHL games yet.

"colorado retained on barrie"

That means nothing considering it's for one year and Barrie will walk next season.

"got kerfoot back somehow"

Dubas definitely won this trade, not going to argue that.

"Still has borgman, sandin, robertson, liljegren as D prospects"

You're gonna need them all to pan out considering only Rielly is signed beyond next season.
Sandin and Liljegren are the only notables there. The others are just prospect depth.

"Good Fwd prospect group too"
Not compared to when he took reign. He has nothing to show for it.

Traded a 4th defensemen for a 5th defensemen at best.

Well he did a hell of a job taking over for early worst GM of the year. He inherited a mess. Zaitsev is not a top 4 defenseman
Robertson is a great prospect
they drafted Mikko Kokkonen, some drafts had him in the early thirtys
got a high third back in the zaitsev trade
Marlueo trade sucked, but it is SIX MILLION, 7.5% of the cap.
Gardiner is not as good as barrie, and even if he did resign Tor would have four rhd

He traded Zaitsev for a worse defensive replacement and gave him the same money.

Robertson was the 40th-50th ranked prospect, He went where he was projected, I wouldn't call that a good pick, I would call that an expected pick.

You are completely BSing about Kokkonen

This was a decent pick, but he went where he should've.

Marleau has one year left on his contract. That isn't worth giving up a 1st round pick for.

Gardiner isn't as good as barrie, but the defense got worse.

Hainsey, Gardiner, Zaitsev is better than what they replaced it with.

Hainsey sucks and was overplayed
Zaisev was a small bit better defensively, but a lot better ofensively

Hainsey was better than what you have now. He wasn't the ideal guy, but he was better.
These advanced stats are a lie. Don't believe what they tell you.
Marleau was worth giving up a 1st round pick because Dubas is clueless.

No teams are going to NOT make us give a first, we NEEDED to get rid of this contract.
LOL also I meant a lot worse offensively
Back to the prospect argument, the habs have one of the best prospect pools in the league, and the leafs have so much young talent, they dont need a great prospect pool. they have an average prospect pool

The majority of Dubas signings and trades have been quite good. His biggest mistake is trying to lowball Nylander for so long, and having that drag out and basically throwing away a year of a player and hurting his team in a year they could contend.

The Muzzin acquistion gave up some prospects, but they managed to not give any of their top guys, and got Muzzin for the extra year. The Kadri deal was a good bit of asset management, he managed to downgrade to a cheaper but still effective 3rd line C, and get a RHD, even if for only a year. The deals to get himself out from under Zaitsev and Marleau were fine, they were a symptom of contracts he didn't sign. Other than that he landed Tavares, done a pretty good job of getting small upgrades here and there, and managed to come back next year with a similarly talented roster that is probably better allocated than last years version despite facing a cap crunch that most suggested would be guaranteed to cost him one of Matthews, Nylander or Marner. I guess he could still end up losing Marner, but it won't be because he didn't plan to keep him, it will be because he will want an amount that is an insane overpay and either someone will be giving up things of similar value or four first round picks to get him.

The big obstacles this year will be how he manages to deal with some UFA D, to see if he can hold onto picks and prospects going forward, and how he deals with Babcock if he doesn't want to coach to a strategy that Dubas is building his team toward.

But so far, there is not a lot of evidence to suggest he is doing a bad job, I do think it's a hefty mistake to lose time from a good player by trying to lowball them too much, especially when chances are for an extra $100-$200K they probably have him playing in October, but the rest of the moves have been positive in their correct context. Obviously losing a 1st to move Marleau's money sucks, but the deal isn't bad when you consider he never signed Marleau, it's just a bad situation to have to deal with. I would actually say being able to get that done, and Zaitsev out of the way so you can address the D and leaving room to deal with Marner is something a lot of GMs would not have been able to pull off.

In terms of Talent, the Leafs D going into this season are better and better allocated than the group that started last season, but they aren't as talented as who they had to end the year. The problem is they never really had that group entirely healthy, as both Dermott and Gardiner missed time after acquiring Muzzin and played hurt in the playoffs.

Make no mistake though, a top four that includes some mixture of Rielly, Muzzin, Barrie and Dermott is far better than going into last season with Rielly, Gardiner, Hainsey and Zaitsev.

Outside of Sandin/Liljegren, they have B-D level prospects. Nothing that stands out. Factor in no first round pick next year and it's even worse.

They gave up those picks and prospects only to let Gardiner leave and now they are in the exact same situation as they were with Gardiner at the beginning of next year.
