(NYR/DAL) - Zuccarello for draft picks
Oh ****, voted fair deal before reading those conditions. This is a win for the Rags, no doubt. A 3rd rnd becoming a first rnd pick next year if they resign him? So currently he is seriously just a rental as a 3rd vs a 1rst is quite a large consideration. The 2nd becomes a 1rst this year if they make it to the western conference finals, and he plays 50% of the first 2 rounds games. That's also a great deal, as the West isn't locked up at all right now, and who knows which team will come out of that mess. Dallas should be able to improve their pp and general offense with this trade, while hopefully not sacrificing defense, and I guess Lovejoy being brought in is them trying to push that message as well. So not a bad bet on improving the 2nd to a late 1rst rnd pick, though not as good of a bet made on the 3rd to 1rst condition.

Confirmed: (ANA/BUF) - Montour for Guhle and 2019 1st round pick
Can't really argue that Buffalo just got a solid 20min+ dman, that should be able to give Ristolainen a much needed breather in pressure situations. All that at a very sweet 3.3875 cap hit for 1 more season after this. Guhle may just be a great dman that has a higher offensive ceiling than Montour, but given Buffalo's recent lottery success, they are kind of too deep on the left side to allow proper development of Guhle (though they could have tried slotting a leftie on the right and save some future prospects....this seems oddly familiar of Buffalo....pretty sure they did something similar the last time they got good assets/team).

(SJS/DET) - 2019 2nd and 2020 conditional 3rd for Nyquist
Seems unlikely that this year will be the year for the "this is the year" San Jose Sharks. They've certainly thrown the farm and future at this narrow window, and maybe it's reasonable because this year seems like a down year for all the big teams of the past, with the exception of the Easts version of the "this is the year" team (Tampa). I don't think the Sharks are good enough to even make it out of the West though, and could be a likely crash and burn first round exit kind of team. Does Nyquist make them that much better? I think about Tatar last year in Vegas; sure he's a good player, but where does he fit in and how well does he transition to a new team that isn't Detroit (a fairly hardcore system team)?
So Detroit wins this trade in my books. Not a first, but likely two 2nd rnd picks. They still have Vanek for some last minute trade bait, so they might be able to round up a 3rd or 4th as well.

(EDM/VAN) - Spooner for Gagner
At first I thought this was great because I thought Ganger only had a year left on his contract. But no, he still has another year like Spooner, but 1 mil cheaper. So Oilers save 1mil in cap space and basically improve slightly because Ganger is more likely to fit/play hard for a role on the team. He's going to get a solid opportunity to play big minutes (probably try him out as a center or a RW with one of the 3 big centers). Great chance for him to turn his career around. But I would have preferred Spooner being traded for a draft pick or a prospect, simply to just open up the cap space.

How is this a loss? The last two trades have been pretty even as far as Edmonton trades go. Chiarelli would have probably traded RNH instead of Talbot, and got back McQuaid + 2nd pick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangles</b></div><div>You could have got a much more proven goalie for cheaper in the offseason....</div></div>
I doubt it. Maybe for a similar price though. Like I said before, a 2 year deal at around 3 mil aav would have been better, and also wait until closer to the end of the season. Playing against inferior offenses? It's all relative to the competition, especially for goalies. Worse team in front of him, worse players attacking...it evens out and the goalies still see good chances that require good goaltending. You could argue the KHL team he played on was stacked as well, so he probably already was playing with an advantage compared to other KHL goalies, but I'm not going to make such a claim with the limited data on KHL stats. He's clearly a capable goalie by what he's shown so far though. 4+mil per year for 3 is steep though, definitely an overpay at this point, but not surprising considering it's Edmonton and that's very typical.
I'm generally curious though as to who you think would be available at that price range that is "much more proven".

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyDangles</b></div><div>It is an awful signing. The KHL may be the 2nd best league in the world but it it miles below the NHL. You don't pay a goalie $4.5 mil per year on 27 games. EDM probably could have got Varlamov for that price in the offseason.</div></div>
Goalies are a bit different when comparing quality of the two leagues. Everybody knows goalies tend to develop slower and some only reach top level in their late 20s - early 30s. Some spend time playing for all sorts of teams in different leagues around the world, but the important thing is that they keep on playing and keep their confidence levels up. Put a confident goalie who is above average in net on a good team and I could really care less where he played last year.

2 years at 3.25 mil/year
That's what a good contract would look like, but also closer to the end of the year when he's proven he can be consistently good for a season. The contract he has isn't that, but it also isn't too big of an overpay, which is saying something for this GM and this franchise. The biggest issue is the timing. The team has been so up and down lately, and the downs are really low. Basically sealing in your starter going forward, with the team barely holding a .500 record together... doesn't seem like a sound move. But let's face it, Chia is definitely close to being fired, so a few drastic and risky moves are almost expected. All that said, I voted Yes because I'm a hopeless Oilers fan and maybe this is a great contract for what is basically Rinne.

I don't think so. They would have to offer closer to 5mil to get that deal done. You're right about security and all, but he's young and healthy; no reason to settle for a low ball offer like that when he is likely to be worth 2-3 times as much in a couple of seasons.

I wouldn't say "always". You can end up with a back and forth situation where nobody really plays defense, and they just trade chances. Not a very good strategy to win. Obviously it's better to have a good mix of both types of dmen, but even better to have dmen who are good at both breakout passes and denying zone entries. One of the reasons people are so high on Doughty compared to Karlsson; he can actually do both very well.

FINALLY
But seriously, what the heck was the hold up? 3.2 for 2 years? Great negotiating Nurse's agent...really showed your worth losing to Chia in a staring contest.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Clubkid75</b></div><div>The Oilers are fine as long as Sekera goes on and remains on the long term injured reserve. Once he comes back it’s tight as the roster currently stands. They will have about 2 million in space left when he returns depending on who gets sent down to the minors when he comes back</div></div>
I wouldn't say "fine" just yet. If they have a bounce back year and are in or close to playoffs, then at least you can say they are getting their moneys worth. Another year of being a bottom feeder while sitting near the cap though...not fine. But yes, Sekera buried on the LTIR and maybe a trade or two (Lucic, Russell, Cagguila, Kassian), and the Oilers cap situation will be looking a little better. What they really need is too start consistently turning out players from their farm system so they can fill low salary roster spots, make big impacts, then trade them while they are still rfa's.

Projecting Talbot’s Next Contract
Hard to say at this point. Some big "ifs" play a role for sure.
If Talbot has a good year, looking at 5-7 mil for probably 4-6 years.
If Talbot has a so-so year, looking at 4-5 mil for a few years or walking papers if the next point.
If Koskinen steals the show, bye bye Talbot, but how much for Koskinen?
Overall, Oilers aren't looking great between the pipes going forward unless something unlikely happens (Talbot does great and also signs cheap or Koskinen turns out to be good and also sings cheap). Skinner is a ways away it looks like, if ever, and maybe Rodrigue or Hawkey will turn out. But that still doesn't leave much in cap space given their current roster. So does RNH get traded this year for less value than he's worth? Do they trade Lucic with Pulju to get rid of his contract?

(MTL / VGK) - Tatar, Suzuki, 2019 2nd for Pacioretty
I voted fair deal, but now that I think about it more, Montreal kind of wins this one, if only because they didn't lose Pacioretty to FA without any return. I get Vegas's angle here; they just lost Neal and so Pacioretty basically replaces him. But Neal has more big game experience and seems like a more outspoken leader type than Pacioretty, so I don't know if Pacioretty will be able to take those reigns. He is younger though, and has more recent high point/goal seasons; a bad year last year but the Canadiens as a whole were pretty bad.
Overall, seems like a unneeded desperation move by Vegas. They are already selling their young assets to try and make a run at the cup. But I guess they are racing the clock right now; either win big now or risk losing this "fan base" to the NFL.

Had to vote no for this. Sure, it's a league min, but I personally think he will steal the backup position this year because I've seen what Brossoit has to offer and I don't see him being consistent enough to warrant not trying Comrie. Comrie meanwhile looks like he is on the right track to becoming a solid goalie in the NHL; give him some backup time this year and he might provide the Jets with a bit of trade bait next offseason if he has good stats. Would have been better if they inked him for 2 years at a low salary though.

It will be close. Only hope really is that he signs for a 1/2 year 3.5 contract. In a way this issue can be tied to the Griffin Reinhart disaster; Chia wasted good picks for a slow bottom line dman when he could have drafted Barzal or even a handful of decent dmen who would all be capable of jumping in right now on cheap elc's, or maybe trade those picks for a dman who can actually skate... So after that wasted trade, he is forced to resign Russel to keep the defense looking somewhat respectable, and now Nurse finds himself short of a couple million which is tied up in Russel's 4mil-ish per year deal.
