Quoting: ricochetii

There's no excuse for the power play to struggle through multiple years and staff changes. That makes it a GM issue. Same goes for other areas like center depth and puck moving defensemen, with the excuse that "it's hard to make trades". Other teams do it, even if they have to overpay. You also can't "build through the draft" and fail to draft the BPA or develop any of those picks into top contributors.
Ducharme is not doing a good job, but he does have mitigating factors with key injuries and perhaps lacking the personnel to form a definitive strategy. As a new hire, he deserves a little leeway. Bergevin has failed to improve the construction of the team or organization on multiple fronts however. He's out of excuses.

If Bergevin has been with the Canadiens as their GM since the start of the 2012-2013 season. If he hasn't built a winning team by now, what is leading anyone to think that he will?
I completely agree: he needs to go and has needed to for quite some time. There is no excuse. While they would never do it, I think a guy like Jeff Gorton would be an outstanding choice. I assume Darche or Madden would be solid choices (if they go with what we should all assume to be a fracophone GM. I am not going to get into the geopolicial discussion of whether that is the right or wrong choice here).

Quoting: ricochetii

I still believe it's mostly a case of playing the wrong way for the personnel they have. As a result, the team has no identity. They can't play a shutdown game. They can't play a transition game. They can't play a possession game.
What they are doing, is trying to pull elements from different areas and mash them together. Some of the things they are doing, simply don't work in combination.
For one example, you can't have forwards playing high in the defensive zone to cheat on transition, while you have your defense being jammed up behind the net, often by their own initiation.
If they aren't getting to pucks quickly and moving them before getting tied up (or able to maneuver the puck after being pressured), the forwards are stuck waiting for pucks that never come. The defense has to be quick enough to make the first play, or strong enough that they can work the puck into control.
Our defense is instructed to trade themselves off with a forward, preventing them from making clean plays or protecting the net.
Our forwards are instructed to wait for the puck to come up the boards instead of closing the gap or helping to recover possession.
That's just one way in which our strategy is contributing to poor results. There are other examples in many areas of our play. None of these flaws are being recognized or addressed. This is primarily a coaching issue. Personnel better suited to some of these tactics would help, but it's still not a strategy for success.

I completely agree. When Julian was let go, I honestly thought the best candidate was Joel Bouchard, and was surprised that they selected Ducharme instead. It just seems as though they are playing uncomfortable hockey: there is so much nervous energy in the defensive zone, and when things break down they resort to the stretch pass as their only method of providing offense. I have also never been a fan of their power play structure.
Maybe they have the wrong players, too. But to me, this starts with coaching and management. That's just my opinion.

Chiarot and Lehkonen
Opinions on Chiarot vary wildly. I have read that they should expect to get a 3rd for him, but Elliot Friedman thinks they could absolutely get a first.
I don't have a horse in the race. All I know is that I am not in any front offices of any NHL teams, and I don't know what anyone is planning on doing. They can set their value, and see if they get any takers. Personally, I think they'll get a 2nd and a prospect (but that's just my opinion, so please don't hate).
Last thought: Never under estimate a GM's ability to overpay at the trade deadline and the opening of free-agency. It has happened before, and it will happen again. :)
HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all the Americans here! :)

I agree. However, I also never underestimate how GM's always make bad, perplexing decisions at the trade deadline. Chiarot will be traded, and someone is bound to give them a first. I don't think it will be Edmonton, but stranger things have happened. :)

I'm sorry, but you're wrong: https://montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/hockey-inside-out/carolina-gm-insists-revenge-wasnt-part-of-jesperi-kotkaniemi-deal
Kotkaniemi cannot be traded, due to the rules of the CBA.
Now...I'm sure this wasn't a fun thing to read. It may have even been humbling. I could say the same thing to you (you know, "If you are going to quote the CBA, you should probably read it first. Your first paragraph just reeks of ignorance.")
It's neither here nor there, as NOBODY is going to trade for him right now (IF there was an alternative universe where the CBA allowed the Hurricanes to be able to trade him during the season after signing the player to an offer sheet), unless the Hurricanes eat part of his contract. He's simply not playng up to it. It'll be interesting to see what happens. Many people on this site seem to be 100% certain that a deal is alreay done and the only thing in it's way are the days before the new year. Maybe that happens. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe he's not qualified and not resigned and another GM takes a chance on him in the offseason. I assume those GM's read the CBA, correct? After all, we wouldn't want one of them to "reek of ignorance."

Under the CBA, he cannot be traded by the Hurricanes. He can be signed to an extension, but they cannot trade him. He will be there for the rest of the season.
Hindsight's 20/20, but if they could do it all over again, they may not have signed him to that offer sheet. Over $6 million (and a first and third) for a player who just played a shade over 9 minutes last night: they could have allocated that money towards a better asset via trade. While it may have been a conversation starter and made for good laughs, I am not sure they will look back on that move too fondly. Good team, though. I also think that late first may end up being more productive than Kotkaniemi.

Which, to be honest, is (at least in my humble opinion) higher than what Kotkaniemi will become. To me, KK will be a solid bottom 6 forward that can provide some level of offense. Nothing more.

Quoting: Habs4ever

As much as I liked Danault it makes zero sense to pay $5.5 million for 6 years for a defensive centre to be 2nd line centre.
Yes he is missed but Montreal needs an offensive punch behind Suzuki. Either dvo turns it around, Poehling works out or mtl needs to go find an offensive centre for 2nd line.

Could not agree with this take more. In fact, one could argue that paying Kotkaniemi $3 million per is an overpayment (Carolina is paying him $6 just to play left wing on their 4th line at less than 12 minutes a night. While the Canadiens may have missed on his development, I am not sure Carolina is doing any better).
Stating what was already said; either Dvorak progresses back to his mean, Poehling makes a giant leap or they go out and get a 2nd line center via trade or, more likely, free agency and/or the draft in this coming offseason.

I could see them trading for Kravstov. It would give them the excuse to move Armia and/or Lehkonen - two more expensive players - for whatever package they would be able to obtain. They would get younger. I do not know what the cost would be, though. Someone mentioned Caufield, but I cannot imagine a world in which Montreal trades him. Maybe Ylönen and a 2nd or 3rd? That may work. But that's just my opinion.

They're just two different players who play a completely different style. Pezzetta plays a physical, aggressive style; he's tailor made for a 4th line role. RHP has been compared to a poor-man's Gallagher in terms of playing style. They're just different. That's probably why Pezzetta got the call-up first.

I could see them locking up Farrell soon, but giving him time to develop in the AHL Signing kids that are playing in the NCAA is always a risk because they could just choose not to sign (I've always thought that this was a weird clause for draftees. Does anyone know more that I don't?)

I could see Armstrong putting Perron on the team. He's a good player, but probably doesn't deserve the make the team on merit. However, Clarke did the same thing in '98, so anything's possible. That's why I completely buy Binnington making this team, regardless of how good (or bad) other goaltenders have played this season. I could see Parayko making this team because of it, too.
It'll be interesting to see who makes it and how gets left off. There are only so many spots for a country that could literally ice 2-3 teams that could compete in a tourny like this.

Deadline direction changes
I think they could get a first from Edmonton if the Oilers need goaltending at the deadline. Heck, teams do strange things at trade deadlines, and maybe they could get a first for Chiarot from a team that needs an experienced, rough-and-tumble defenseman for the playoffs (or playoff push). However, there is no way they are getting Broberg: he's probably pretty close to untouchable for them.
While you have them getting too much from the Oilers, you also have them not getting enough for Romanov.
These are just my opinions, though: Please don't hate! :)

I like it. I would consider swapping Guhle and Norlinder, as Norlinder actually plays on the right side and Guhle is dominant on the left. While I think Harris may need some seasoning in the AHL, he may not sign if they tell him that. Drafting NCAA kids can be tough : I hope that, during the next CBA negotiation, teams actually get some level of protection from just loosing their drafted NCAA players. It's always kind of unnerving there. Teams (and not just Montreal) are left in a difficult spot of having to consider dealing them for pennys on the dollar if they feel as though the player won't sign.

There's going to be someone who claims that Byron has negative value: he doesn't, though his production does not warrent his contract. I bet that they would have to add a little more to get that deal done.
I think the deals for Suzuki, Romanov and Evans look great.
Though: I am not sure they will be able to land Wright. They would either have to finish in last, have the Hurricanes finish in last (both are unlikely), or have one (or both) of the Canadiens and Hurricanes miss the playoffs AND win the lottery, ergo moving up 10 spots in the draft (this would, of course, mean that one of those teams finished as one of the 10 worst teams in the NHL). PHEW! BUT....I hope it happens! He is a heck of a player, and I'd feel bad for him if he had to go to some of the other markets. He'd be great for a hockey-mad city. :)

Has nothing to do with your team, but I think Byron will just be placed on the regular IR instead of LTIR, as he is expected back in December. I sounds like minor detail, but it does have major implications. :)

Eichel
I feel awful for Sabres fans, because their team is in such a tough position with this. No team is going to trade for him without knowing that he's healthy enough to both play again and play at the level that warrents his cap hit. That's just the reality. Just my opinion, but I am surprised that they haven't let him get the surgery he wants, and if I am Eichel I hold out until I get that surgery: it's his body, and while the CBA lets teams have control over a player's medical procedures, the spirit of that is, in reality, not for major injuries that can affect the future health and life of a player (like, for instance, a spinal injury). This is a big deal: if it weren't, he would have been traded by now. This has been ugly, and will continue to be ugly. What's the over/under on the which party caves when it comes to the surgery he gets? I'm probably not taking Eichel, it it certainly seems as though Adams has dug his heels in. Eichel will, at minimum, have to miss the Olympics, and if he doesn't have a surgery soon there is a potential that he misses the entire season. He may never play at the same level (the $10 million dollar per season level) or even play at all. This is his life.
This is all to say that no Sabres fan asked for this. Their is a good chance they're not going to win this trade. The Sabres are also looking to be historically bad this season, and while they have some good prospects, the winning seasons probably will not happen for at least another 3 years (? too liberal, though? Maybe 4-5?). And now the odds are they won't win an Eichel trade. I feel for those fans.

Myers and Fabbro will need to deals in the next season, and Trenin may or may not require a larger salary, dependent on his play in the upcoming season. Buffalo may need to take salary back. Sadly, I'm not quite sure that they'll be able to "win" an Eichel trade anymore. I feel awful for those fans in Buffalo. :(

Agreed, though I kind of get the logic: Poehling is waiver exempt and can be sent down without worry that he will be lost through waivers.
