The problem with KK’s game is two-fold:
1) skating is awkward. As a result he falls a lot and is not particularly fast. This is something many of us thought would improve after his first few years but it really hasn’t. When he skates, he’s all legs and he looks very weak on his skates.
2) while his shot is good, he doesn’t seem to be able to get it off quickly. He often takes huge windups and pulls it back way too far and holds it the for that extra split second which gives opposing players enough time to get a stick on it . I always felt those were his 2 biggest weaknesses that if he could improve, he’s be a much more useful player.

Additionally you’d like to see him improve on face offs but that’s not as big of an issue than the 2 points I mentioned above.

I’m not gonna sit here and say this deal is great but KK has all but officially signed a 4 year deal worth about 4 mil. He’s not going to be a UFA and that is well known

Does that deal cost them Trochek?

If you are going to quote the CBA, you should probably read it first. Your first paragraph just reeks of ignorance.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong: https://montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/hockey-inside-out/carolina-gm-insists-revenge-wasnt-part-of-jesperi-kotkaniemi-deal

Kotkaniemi cannot be traded, due to the rules of the CBA.

Now...I'm sure this wasn't a fun thing to read. It may have even been humbling. I could say the same thing to you (you know, "If you are going to quote the CBA, you should probably read it first. Your first paragraph just reeks of ignorance.")

It's neither here nor there, as NOBODY is going to trade for him right now (IF there was an alternative universe where the CBA allowed the Hurricanes to be able to trade him during the season after signing the player to an offer sheet), unless the Hurricanes eat part of his contract. He's simply not playng up to it. It'll be interesting to see what happens. Many people on this site seem to be 100% certain that a deal is alreay done and the only thing in it's way are the days before the new year. Maybe that happens. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe he's not qualified and not resigned and another GM takes a chance on him in the offseason. I assume those GM's read the CBA, correct? After all, we wouldn't want one of them to "reek of ignorance."

Under the CBA, he cannot be traded by the Hurricanes. He can be signed to an extension, but they cannot trade him. He will be there for the rest of the season.

Hindsight's 20/20, but if they could do it all over again, they may not have signed him to that offer sheet. Over $6 million (and a first and third) for a player who just played a shade over 9 minutes last night: they could have allocated that money towards a better asset via trade. While it may have been a conversation starter and made for good laughs, I am not sure they will look back on that move too fondly. Good team, though. I also think that late first may end up being more productive than Kotkaniemi.

The first portion of your post is not true. Article 10.3 paragraph (b) says "The Prior Club may not Trade that Restricted Free Agent for a period of one year from the date it
exercises its Right of First Refusal. " Paragraph (c) of that same section, dealing with what happens if an offer sheet is not matched, makes no reference to restrictions on trading the player.

The only time that trading is restricted when dealing with offer sheets is
a) in the 7-day period that the prior team has the right of first refusal, they cannot trade that right to another team
b) if the prior team uses their right of first refusal, they are not permitted to trade the player for a calendar year

The second portion of your post is disingenuous. Carolina didn't go after the 21 year old Kotkaniemi just for this year, they are trying to build a sustained window lasting at least until 2024-25. They had the cap room to do it, and trading a late 1st and 3rd for a very young player who can be a legit 3C right now is definitely worth it. Just because the Hurricanes are so deep at centre that Kotka has to play 4C now isn't a knock on him.

Edit: you can download the CBA from here and read it if you want to. https://cdn.nhlpa.com/img/assets/file/NHL_NHLPA_2013_CBA.pdf . The relevant sections are on page 56 of the PDF. The Montréal Gazette made an error.

Not necessarily, it depends on the contracts that they want to give to Necas, Bear, and DeAngelo and it also depends on Trocheck's own demands. Nino's almost certainly gone though.

I feel like they could be in a similar situation this year as they were with Hamilton. Carolina sets their price and if Troch doesn't like it, he's gone for another team to throw a pile of money at a 28 year old UFA centre.

I’m sorry but you were saying? If you can pinpoint exactly where in the CBA it says that the canes won’t be able to trade KK if they chose it, I have no problem taking my comment back. You won’t be getting any good or realizable info about the CBA from the Montreal Gazette, so you might as well actually go straight to the source, the CBA.
