i just wanna know what leverage Draisaitl has to command more than that. please explain to me where i as gm, would get off paying my second line centre more than 6.75M per year. if you want to go into "hes a 1st line winger land" why would i give a winger more money than that? cant win with wingers making money, its the least important position in hockey and teams who pay wingers HUGE money (Washington/Chicago/Dallas/StLouis etc) cant win cups

Um you can, that's how RFA / UFA rules work. Other than an offer sheet, players basically have to take whatever they're offered until they're UFA (there is a window where they can apply for arbitration, and still get almost nothing)

His options basically are to sign an offer sheet, which EDM can match and trade him to whomever they want, OR to become a UFA that is 26 and has won a couple of Stanley Cups with McDavid.
EDM wouldn't have signed Russell at 4 million if they were going to offer Draisatl a longer term contract that would have included more expensive UFA years</div></div>

I don't see it happening from either side. That's a long contract for Van to retain on and I doubt the Oilers would want to take on Eriksson's full deal. On top of that the Canucks shouldn't be dealing away their younger players that still have good upside. Virtanen is a question mark (I see him as a middle six winger) and Stecher looks like he could be a good top 4 D.</div></div>

if edmonton is taking on louis deal it would have to be 50% retained they cant afford a 3rd liner for over 4M and theres no way they give up a pick as well in that trade

Here are some things that WILL happen in Edmonton this year;

1) One of Benning or Nurse will earn a top 4 role on the team, at first because of Sekera's injury, but later because Russell is terrible (and I see you agree with that from the buyout). 2) Maroon and Letestu will have strong enough years as role players that they'll be able to cash in somewhere as UFA's. The Oil won't be able to afford to keep them.

You can point to Tarasenko or others around 7.5 as comparables, but they signed those deals in previous years when the cap was lower, and Leon just put up a point per game through the regular season and playoffs. The dude's agent won't be giving a huge discount, even if his numbers are inflated by the 'McJesus effect'. The only way they agree to a 7.5 mill cap hit is on a shorter term so he can cash in on the next contract.</div></div>

i can get on board with 1,2 and 3, but i cannot agree with Drai making more than 7.5. hes proved nothing, has much lower comparables and literally has no leverage. someone wants to offersheet him more, then take your 4 first rounders and run. any team that can afford $9/10M drai wont have a good first rounder for the next few years
