Boot goodrow
Won't be able to get rid of Goodrow now - that ship has already sailed. They should have just bought him out and used the 3.85 mil they would have added in cap space to perhaps sign players better than Belzile, Riley Nash, Bonino, Brouilliard, etc.

Keep in mind the cap is going to go up a minimum of 3-4 million a year over the next few seasons so the salary term will not look as bad - thinking a deal similar to the Nemeth salary dump would work (2nd and 3rd rd pick - no prospect sent back to NYR like in the Nemeth trade). This is the reason why I felt they should have just bought him out this year. The cap hits would have been more than reasonable. They could have used the close to 3.9 mil this year for 2 players that put up similar stats and would have stopped them from bargain basement shipping on day 1 of FA. Save picks for other trades

WHAT IF NYR Bought Out Goodrow
He had a pretty decent season last year. My thinking was if something happened to Shesty, Rittich is younger and capable of handling a bigger workload. Quick has been in severe decline past several years. Heck Vegas went with Hill over Quick - and that was a team that had more than enough defensive capabilities to cover for him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GeneralLandro</b></div><div>No it wouldn’t</div></div>
Yes it would. Nemeth had 2 years left on his cap dump trade - NYR sent 2 picks a few years down the road and NYR got a player back. This is 2 picks and a young cost-controlled player with nothing being sent back for a contract with 4 years on it. Also gives ANA another deadline asset to trade when they are sitting near the bottom of the Pacific again.

If trading Goodrow I wouldn't want to take the cap savings (and then some) to add another 30+ year old player. I would either invest most of the money into 2 players who put up similar offensive numbers as Goodrow and save some cap space for later in the year (i.e. any 2 of Boqvist, Heinen, Motte, Comtois, for example) or hold the entire savings and bring up some of the young guys (Othmann and Cuylie)

Take the NYR package and add a 3rd rd pick to it and change the ANA to the good old "future considerations" - that would be enough.

There is only a 2nd buyout window specific to teams who end up with 1 or more arbitration filings and even with that only a player with a contract over 4mil would be eligible for a buyout.

It's not hindsight. I didn't like the pick since day 1. LAF wasn't deemed close to a generational talent, is a LW which that position was already filled with the re-signing of Kreider and signing Panarin, and the org needs have been and still seem to be RW and C. So I picked the player that fit 1 of those needs who would have been available at #16 based on how the players were already picked - Dawson was the one available.

I was one of the Ranger fans that was not happy with the #2 pick - wanted #1 and Hughes. Wasn't happy with the Kaako selection - would have rather taken Dach, Zegras, or Seider. Then in 2020 instead of drafting Schneider since they wouldn't have been looking for another RD they could have actually drafted a RW like Peterka or Evangelista.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Onlyfairtrades1</b></div><div>Drury would be instantly fired if he did that trade. Horrible idea for the Rangers.</div></div>
I can see Drury making that stupid trade - it's not like he has had a fantastic track record so far. Here are some of his greatest hits:
signed Nemeth for 3 yrs @ 2.25M a year.
wasted money signing Tinordi when there were plenty of more serviceable LD available
acquired Reaves and immediately gave him a 1 year extension for no reason.
Traded for Blais - gave up Buch for him. I know Rangers weren't going to be able to keep him in 22-23 but they would have been better off signing him to a 1 year deal and trading him at the deadline instead of using him to acquire a player that was always in and out of the doghouse in STL and most likely would have been cut if not for this trade
Traded for Tyler Motte twice - which he would never have had to do if he didn't sign Reaves to that extension
Not to mention his horrendous skills in cap management (only GM that never used paper transactions with waiver eligible players to bank cap space, didn't put Lindgren on LTIR combined with the ridiculous pursuit of a damaged Kane forced the team to play the last 25 games of the year extremely shorthanded - few games with only 15 skaters).

I wouldn't want to commit long-term to Killorn or Zucker. Killorn had a career year at his age going into FA. Zucker is injured too much.
I agree with Jimbo1119 - Trouba buyout is not really worth it. A goodrow buyout with the reinvestment of that money into 2 forwards that will each produce near his level with a combined salary of Goodrow - kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I wouldn't pick those 2 players...but the premise is fine. The issue I have is what's done here with Trouba. I don't know enough about Soucy to offer a real good opinion whether he'd be a good replacement for Trouba....but I don't dislike the premise- as long as the resulting CAP savings is invested in a player much younger than Tarasenko. To get out from under Cap committed to Trouba- only to commit that to a player who will be 37 when his contract is done is just foolish.</div></div>
I wouldn't commit to Tarasenko long-term - not with the multiple shoulder injuries over the past few years. Plus, there is definitely going to be team that would sign him for more than 5 mil a year.
Soucy is a huge left shot D who plays alot on his off-side. Not a player who is going to generate a lot of offense. I would rather take that 4 mil and use it on an actual RD like Mayfield - Mayfield is 2 years older than Soucy.

Cup Contender
Panarin will be tough to trade. Easiest way to open up time for LAF and Kaako - Panarin or Kreider can suck it up and play RW. I hope they do not try to shoehorn LAF at RW again. Another one I've seen alot in other mock rosters is Othmann at RW - if they are looking to go that route, they should let him play in the AHL to gain the experience and comfort under less pressure and a coach that has been pretty good with the young talent there.
Not a popular idea in ACGM but buyout Goodrow. Drop the player making 3.64mil and providing 30 pts and take that money and spread it across 2 bottom 6 players (preferably 1C and 1 RW) that combined will provide a minimum of 40-50 pts combined for the same cap hit as Goodrow. Who cares if the dead cap space 4 years from now is high - the cap increases year over year after the 23-24 season will be anywhere between 3 and 4 million dollars a year.
Then make Drury signs up for some cap management classes so he understands that he should be doing paper transactions with the waiver exempt players (Cuylie, Othmann, and Schneider) to bank cap space - every team in the league seems to understand this concept except the Rangers.

Buyouts are a very bitter pill. If done to extend players off ELCs or to acquire either a young player (signed with term) or an RFA- then the buyout might make some sense. But to use the gained CAP to invest in UFA's? That's just extremely poor asset and CAP management.</div></div>
If you are performing a buyout on a player who is in the same age range as a UFA you are going to sign with that money that is going to either fill a bigger need on the team or provide the opportunity to sign multiple players with each one of them having the ability to duplicate the 1 player's production why would it be poor asset and CAP management. Wouldn't 2 players making a combined 3.64 million and putting up a combined point total b/t 50 & 60 pts be better than 1 player making the same amount of money and only putting up 31 pts.

Why Othmann as top 6 RW. I get he played some RW in juniors but wouldn't it benefit him to gain experience at RW in the AHL where there will be less pressure and a HC that has been pretty solid with the young talent there. Rather have Cuylie on 4th line at LW, put Kaako 2nd line RW and Engvall 3rd line RW

WHAT IF NYR never made trades with Winnipeg
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>xxToothxx</b></div><div>Would have rather have had Copp( w/out the 5.6 hit) than Kane this past year. What a waste of time and resources to accommodate him. Now that was an overpay!!</div></div>
I hated the Kane move for plenty of reasons and I also considered that an overpay because everyone knew he was hurt - that 2nd rd pick could have been used for something else.
But what I hated more was how the Rangers mismanaged the roster the entire season (1st issue actually was from previous season).
1) They get Reaves in 21-22 and immediately sign him to that 1.75mil extension - that money cost them a chance to re-sign Motte at the end of the 22 season (then they have to use another pick to get him again this past season).
2) All season they should have been performing paper transactions with Schneider to gain cap space.
3) They held onto Kravtsov too long and picked up Motte too early (and taking on more salary in the process).
4) When Lindgren got hurt, he should have went on LTIR (missed 17 of the last 23 games - really only played the last 5 games of the season which were meaningless). That 3 mil (Lindgren's salary) could have been used to get a different forward like Max Domi or split the money across a few forwards (i.e. Bjudstad and Bonino for example).
Instead, they decided it was better to play short-handed to barely get enough space to get Kane. I honestly believe if they would have just put Lindgren on LITR and not had to play multiple games at end of the year with only 16 skaters (couple of games they had 10 forwards and 4 D) they would have gotten out of the 1st round - they were too tired.

Despise people spouting off ignorant comments with ignorant reasoning.</div></div>
I am not denying he was a piece that helped NYR get to the ECF. I still feel it was an overpay. Frank Vatrano was acquired for a 4th rd pick (BTW - another big piece to the team in getting to the ECF). Compare his career stats to Copp (Vatrano:482 GP 211 pts .473 ppg Copp: 565 GP 244 pts .431ppg) - pretty similar. If talking the playoff run Copp had 14 pts (cost Barron 22 1st rd pick, 22 2nd rd pick and 5th rd pick) and Vatrano 13 pts (cost 22 4th rd pick). 1 extra playoff point for what was given up is an overpay.
I did not say NY gave him that money. The first portion of my reply provided reasoning on why I felt it was an overpay for Copp. The 2nd portion of my response was providing this years stats as further proof of an overpay. I am pretty sure DET was expecting more than 9 goals for the money they paid Copp.

I'm just not a fan of Jones. Would trade while he still has some type of value for either a C or a RW around the same age and with waiver exemption. Bridge deal is the way to go with Miller. The trend in the NHL is puck moving offensive-minded D carry more of a premium a deal - teams will live with the defensive warts. If Lindgren got 3 yr @ 3mil Miller will get at least 3yr @ 4 mil.
No need to sign Irwin (too old) - better keeping Hajek at that price point (at least a lot younger and you already know what you are getting), you can get a similar skill set player like Motte for cheaper.
Othmann should not be on the roster in 23-24. He should be in the AHL to further develop - perhaps even experiment with him on the right side.
