Reinforcements for Ovi
For me the key to this is getting to 8oa, one spot in front of the Wings to snipe Reinbacher as a potential 1RHD for the next core.
We could chat about the other pieces and if that makes the most sense but I’d probably do this or something very close to it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>My problem with Hellebuyck is that we can't afford the cost of his acquisition, we can't afford his cap hit for the one season that he'll be in Los Angeles, and we can't afford to re-sign him. Since this trade has been suggested many times since the Kings' exit from the playoffs, I've gone through these reasons in other threads, so I was short-winded responding to this suggestion. Let me be more expansive:
Our primary needs are to fill the vacancies at #2 LhD and starting goaltender. Given the current makeup of our roster, we'll have about $8 million to accomplish those two tasks. Hellebuyck's $6-million-plus cap hit is a drag on that resolution which Petersen's cap hit offsets, but Dillon isn't the answer to our LhD problem so that package is a no-go regardless of what we have to send; meanwhile, Byfield and Clarke are projected to be such key future cornerstones of our franchise that we simply won't part with them. Let's consider only Hellebuyck from the Jets' side. (I'm not sure that the Ryan Miller trade is a good comparable because as I recall, he wasn't a rental and this deal took place before the cap era became so all-encompassing.) Hellebuyck for Petersen is cap-satisfying for Los Angeles but obviously horribly insufficient on value for the Jets. So we'd offer you our 2023 second (having traded our 2022 and 2023 firsts, we probably won't be keen on trading our 2024) and a choice of Alex Iafallo and one of the following two prospects or both Alex Turcotte and Sean Durzi. I think that's about the most we'd want to give up for one season of Connor Hellebuyck, as excellent and hardy as he is.</div></div>
The Miller trade although 8 years ago was within the cap era and he was a rental as he signed in Vancouver the following year.
With Helle being a top 5, some would say top 3 goalie in the league a 1st is going to be a must if the pick is a significant part of the return. Probably looking at the Pens or Sens or maybe even wings as better landing spots I guess. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Much appreciated.

He’s 30 but also scored 40 goals this year and was o e of the top Cs when it comes to slot passes per 60 so of his line mates could have finished better he would have topped 90 points. I thought with how close Detroit was this year they would be ready to make the playoffs next year and a Larkin/Scheif 1 2 punch is as good as anyone else.
Was leaving Kasper to take 55’s spot as he ages. If it doesn’t make sense it doesn’t but with 5 picks in the first 2 rounds I thought there was some draft capital to play with.
I would probably expect a 1st from a playoff team, prospect + at the deadline and since the Islanders pick will be later I figured I’d see if we could move the timing up a bit.

My understanding is that they let both walk with Hughes coming in next year on the left and Nemec needing one more year on the right.
For a contending team I thought DeMelo would be the perfect add as he’s great with the young guys if you wanted to pair him with Hughes and he can handle top pair minutes of something happened to Hamilton.
He’s a defensive d man but the cost is the cost. We could hold and move him at the deadline for a late second so I think we’d need that level of return. You want to suggest a prospect or player instead of the pick I’d listen but thought the late 2nd would be the preferred thing to move.

Some insiders thought Stanley to the Caps at the deadline was essentially a done deal, which was the basis for the trade. Wheeler at $4M and Schmidt at $3M are value contracts at that point so the idea was a couple of guys trying to max out OVI’s last bit as rentals and a longer term piece in Stan for a guy I thought you were trying to move. He likely wouldn’t waive his trade protection to come here anyhow but that’s what I was thinking. If you don’t want rentals and are interested in younger pieces only I get that.

Sorry bro. Didn’t mean to hit a nerve but I know how it feels with all these PLD trades we wouldn’t consider. I had seen a few for by field but hadn’t seen Brandt. With the RHD depth the kings have, their desire to get out from Cal’s dead cap and filling a hole on left d with pretty much the exact player you need (if he was younger would be perfect but price would be more) I wanted to see what the commentary would be as Clarke probably needs a year or 2 in the A I thought he could be moved as Helle will extend there for sure.
Are you not interested in Helle or just don’t want to give up a high end asset for him? If you were interested what would your offer be? The Ryan miller trade is maybe the most comparable one considering age and performance but with Ott included it muddies the water a bit. But that was a 1st, a 3rd, an nhl goalie coming back (Halak), Stewart as a middle 6 winger that was picked 18 OA but had some injury trouble and then carrier that was a recent 2nd round pick that was nhl ready but not really established yet.
Ott was in his 11th NHL season and was on the downswing scoring 24 points in his 4+ seasons after the trade. (Total points, not per year)
I’d prefer to avoid 3 or 4 pieces for the return and would prefer fewer, but better assets.

I think a few reasons. 1) he hits and works has ass off on the forcheck turning pucks over. In Winnipeg we love that stuff but our other top 6 wingers aren’t very physical. 2) he goes to the net and scores from the slot. KFC, Ehlers, Perfetti, Wheeler don’t really bring that. 3) he said he likes it here and would consider signing an extension. He’s a keep as even with what we have coming there is skill but not a lot of grit. Also it’s just nice to hear a player say they want to be here. With so much talk about who is leaving and being on every single no trade list it’s really wearing on people having all these people dump on where you live all the time. Honestly it takes a lot of the shine off the NHL for a number of people.

I disagree on your DeMelo take. If you need them at the deadline you can use them at the start of the season too. It’s just a question of capspace.
Also, the only coach the Jets have ever fired is Claude Noel. Pomo quit and Lowry was interim and not offered the job.

No, that wouldn’t be the offer that would win the bidding war. We’d be looking for one or maybe 2 pieces as the return.

Get a 1st + good prospect for each and tank for a top 10 pick at the 2024 and 2025 draft. That's 8 good prospects you're adding over 2 years.
By the start of the 26/27 season, WPG could have many good young players joining the team and build something strong.</div></div>
The only outcomes that would be disastrous is them all being kept as own rentals.
Helle will stay if we’re going to compete and without PLD and 55 we won’t, so moving them both means moving 37 also.
If the rumour is true that PLD will extend if 55 is traded then maybe we can convince 37 to stay too. It’s a really interesting dynamic because as an RFA this summer the Jets will offer PLD 8 by $9.5M and he’ll be able to go to the Habs and ask what the offer will be as a UFA. If it’s 7 by $7.5M that’s $24M in career earnings he leaves on the table just to play for Montreal. Hopefully he has a change of heart and extends long term, we move 55 to Detroit, Boston or Carolina and 37 decides to stay. That is the path to keep the team competitive and clearly hand over leadership to the new core.

I disagree. I think it’s critical for a franchise to punch them back to send a message that you’re not to be messed with.
For the Jets I would do this deal if PLD won’t extend long term. I especially love it because it screws over the Habs and their low ball offers. However, the latest rumour I’ve heard is that he will sign long term with us as long as we trade 55.
So 55 to Carolina could make sense too, especially if you’re just looking for a 5 year term.

Given his age, contract duration and the fact he’s likely getting the C I don’t think he’s moved and if he was it wouldn’t be for a bunch of magic beans.
Dillon could be a fit there. Logan Stanley. Nate Schmidt maybe? Ville Heinola or Declan Chisholm.
Required returns would vary but IMO JMo and Samberg are the foundation pieces of the next core so even when we sell, both those guys are off limits.

I appreciate that. Holtz is the key piece of the return for me but I could explore what Helle with or without retention and DeMelo would look like. I’d want a second for DeMelo, that could be Casey or a pick in this years’ draft. I’d be ok either way.
Without Holtz I’m really not sure why I’d trade Helle to NJ as I could probably get a 2023 1st from someone else so waiting the extra year is pretty unappealing for the rebuild especially when the pick will be super late. What would your offer look like for Helle (with retention or without)?

If the Jets could even get one prospect on the level of Holtz or Casey (+ a minor add) when trading Hellebuyck it'd be a major coup.</div></div>
What would your offer be for just Helle then? For me the appeal was really Holtz as a right shot forward with high draft pedigree but that hasn’t broken out yet and will clearly be behind Mercer.
What if the Jets took out Casey and added one of our Russian wingers?
The salary retention is a critical piece for the cap to work for NJ but the return needs to be the same or better than we would get trading the pieces individually.
What are your goalie comp trades you would consider relevant benchmarks for a Helle trade? Patrick Roy is probably the last time a goalie his calibre was moved. Maybe Cory Schneider? Less proven but more team control.

There are 13 teams guaranteed to finish the season with more points than the Islanders, so the latest that their pick could be is 19th overall, and they're competing with Pittsburgh or Florida plus Winnipeg for that spot; if they miss the playoffs, they're pretty much assured of #15 or #16.</div></div>
So it remains to be seen…. That’s why they play the games. They could make the playoffs and win. There’s a chance so it isn’t decided yet.

Rumour around town here is that PLD will sign long term here if we trade 55. Who knows if that is true or not but trading him is based on that rumour being true. I can trade Scheif elsewhere but I think we need a stopgap C unless we think one of Perfetti, Lucius, Lambert or Barron can take that spot. Could be Monahan instead of Toews…. Sounds like a perfect partnership in 2024 as a free agent.
Fat chance i see Blake wheeler and Connor Hellebuyck waiving for NJ. I seriously doubt that the NJD are on Wheeler's 4 team trade list. And there are rumblings that after his wife gave birth to their first child. That Connor Hellebuyck wants to play closer to home. Would love to see a Helly/Cossa duo in the coming years in Detroit.</div></div>
I think 55 would for sure consider Detroit as a UFA. I think the Jets trade him somewhere he’d like to go this offseason so if that is somewhere other than Detroit he likely doesn’t see free agency. Just like Red Wings fans were sure that Trouba would just sign there as a UFA. If you don’t make a play for the player there is someone else that will.
Last offseason when we stripped the C off him it was rumoured he was willing to expand the list and at this point in his career winning is the most important thing so I think he does waive for the Devils. We’ll have to agree to disagree on if they’d go or not. I think they will and that Helle would extend in Jersey. If you wanted to talk a trade for 37 we could do that but it feels like the preference is just to hope for the best in free agency.

I just saw save percentages of .908 and .901 with a $4.5m caphit and a guy in the substance abuse program and thought he was maybe an expensive reclamation project. If he’s not a cap dump that’s my bad. Just thought that $14.5M in goalies isn’t an optimal way to build a team especially when one of them is playing at replacement level.

The problem with Reinhart for us is he only has one year of team control left and the direction the team takes in the offseason is unknown yet. From a cap perspective we may not be able to make it work unless we move people out and if we move out Scheif and/or PLD then it only makes sense if he would be open to extending here.
I was thinking like a 50% retained Wheeler + Stanley for Knight and Mackie S. knight hasn’t been good at the NHL level, is currently in the substance abuse program and has a $4.5M hit for the next 3 years while Bob is still under contract. Sort of depends on how much of a dump you think Knight is.
As for the OP. The 1st, Stanley and either Rash or Danny to follow the typical pick, roster player, prospect return. The 5th round pick…. You know you’re reaching there as it won’t move the needle.

Montreal doesnt have leverage...?.. what kind of false equivalency nonsense are you trying to expute
A contender wont have a top15 pick to spend as a rental. Not only are you picking and choosing your own reality but you dont understand the dynamics of a contenders package and a team like Montreal</div></div>
My example is as likely to happen as PLD signing a $4M offersheet. That’s the point. There is a near zero percent chance either happens so that isn’t leverage.
If Florida makes the playoffs you don’t have a top 15 pick to offer either.
I understand the dynamics perfectly of what a rental would get from a contender. If Montreal’s package is less than that then we’ll deal him wherever we get the most. It isn’t really rocket science here.
Assuming PLD decides to screw the Jets more than he already has with his agents public plea isn’t likely. Bergevin is gone so no offersheet is coming. Want to get him without having to compete on the UFA market for him? That has value. Want to lock him up long term before the cap explodes? That has value. Want to make sure he doesn’t get a taste of somewhere else and change his mind on Montreal? That has value.
All I’m saying in thread after thread here is that Montrel has the pieces to make a fair trade for PLD. The Jets won’t take less than what they would get as a 50% retained deadline rental. Maybe that price is too rich for the Habs? If so, no big deal as we can trade him somewhere else. Then maybe he makes it to UFA and maybe he doesn’t. That’s the gamble. Maybe he takes an 7 by $8 contract, but what if someone offers him $9.5? Is he giving up $10.5M in lifetime earnings to play in Montreal? Maybe, but maybe not.
If Habs want him they have to come with a respectable deal if they want to make sure they get him. A trash deal means they may or may not get him through UFA but if they do the contract won’t be a sweetheart one like they could get if they traded for him.

It is kind of funny that there is a quote about not understanding leverage and then a super far fetched example is used to prove that they have it. What if Arizona is moved to Quebec City after the season and they offer 3 1st round picks for PLD because they want a French Canadian superstar…. Like it’s only leverage if it falls within the realm of a possible or likely outcome.
Maybe we deal PLD to Boston and he really likes it there and extends…. Maybe Carolina or Vegas make a play for him?
The reality is that Montreal has to come to the table with at least what he’d get as a pure rental. It’s got to have a 1st round pick, this year would be preferable to next year’s so the Florida pick is appealing. It’s got to have a high end prospect and a roster player we could use. With PLD and Suzuki, Beck seems like a prospect that could be offered up. For a roster player, for me that would be Barron to unite him with his brother age wise he helps the next core. Dvorak is a negative. We have Lowry at 3c and he isn’t top 6 quality so if we have to take him I’d need even more. If it gets to the point we give a prospect back like Rash or something so be it.
There is for sure a trade to be made but the Jets are going to have to take a haircut by getting the rental price, not the Horvat price where an extension could be worked out. Taking less than the rental price just isn’t a real possibility.

Hello Kevin Cheveldayoff
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>eazy_duz_it</b></div><div>I saw something where the Habs can offersheet Dubois for the value of a second round pick and if the Jets keep Dubois, then they can't trade him and will have to let him walk next year. Rather do that than give up so much value</div></div>
Don’t believe everything that you read because the Habs already traded their 2nd round pick so they’d need to trade for it back before being able to make an offersheet that involves a 2nd round pick. His qualifying offer is $6M which would be a first and a third and if he goes to player elected arbitration he’d get probably $7.5M which is an offersheet the Habs can’t make because they don’t have their own 2nd round pick. So not trading for him and competing for him as a UFA is a possibility. Any offersheet less than 4 - 1st round picks the Habs can’t actually make. PLD technically could sign an offersheet for less than what he’d get in arbitration but why would he do that? Knowing the Jets will match and he has to play the year in Winnipeg for less money then if he had just elected arbitration.

Thoughts on making it a bigger deal with the Jets?
Scheifele and Pionk? I had only really pegged Detroit as a potential landing spot for 55 because the wings are his childhood favourite team, Stevie Y his favourite player and Copp was his roommate here on Winnipeg so he’d have a good friend on the team as well. Larkin Scheif 1-2 punch is strong as the team is ready to compete.
Cost for 55 would include the Islanders pick + 2nd rounder + sort of thing. Hadn’t contemplated a bigger deal, just wondering if there would be interest. Another likely destination for 55 could be Boston but Detroit is probably where he would prefer to sign an extension.
