Although I do think Murray is banged up enough that he deserves to be on LTIR, he absolutely benefits from agreeing to go on LTIR when he did. Now Toronto cannot buy him out and he will get his full salary, which was not going to happen if he was deemed healthy enough to be considered an active player. Now Murray will get his full salary, all paid to him this year, and will also get the benefit of working on getting back on his game while utilizing Toronto's facilities, at Toronto's expense. If Murray argued he was healthy, he would have been bought out, made less money, and spread over 2 years, and would have had to foot the fill for any training expenses in order get his game back in order.

He is lazy at times and does not put the team first. There have been numerous instances in the play offs that have been highlighted where he just bails on a play because he doesn't want to sacrifice himself. And one of the most important requirements of play off hockey is to sacrifice for the team. How do you think the minimum wage players feel when they see that type of play, they say to themselves "why should I go out and sacrifice for the team if the so called super stars who make a lot more money aren't willing to do it." He has tons of skill and talent, but his actions on the ice too many times just scream "me first". That is the culture that a team needs to get rid of to be successful, and that is my guess why someone like ROR probably got out of dodge at the first opportunity, because he knew he mental make up of the team, and knew it is not the foundation of a Stanley Cup winner.

Sujet: line ideas with the current roster
Your scratches are actually players that need to be sent down to be cap compliant. So you are now running with a 20 man roster, with only 6 D, one of them the oldest players in the league, another showing signs of deterioration and being on the wrong side of 30 as well. Timmins will likely be claimed when sent down, your only 2 roster players who are waiver exempt are Knies and Robertson, both making under a million and both forwards. Because your using LTIR you don't accumulate cap so you won't be able to gain cap space to add an additional player to the roster part way into the season. That defense as is is not cup contender worthy. And the biggest issue of all, what if Murray decides he is healthy enough to play in December. Unlike other LTIR players he has been compared to (Price, Weber, etc) he does not have a multi year contract that will continue to pay him. He needs to play at some point this year if he hopes to get any type of contract next year. Toronto is playing with fire in so many ways if they don't make some additional moves.

If Brodie was bought out his cap hit this year is 0, his cap hit next year is 2.5 million. Pretty big impact for a year that Toronto needs to sign 2 of their bigger contracts, and presumably with a Murray buyout on its way that is going to add another 2 million to next year's cap number. You probably think Toronto can still trade Murray for positive assets do you? I do admit that I didn't think Engvall would get a 3rd back, even if it was a future 3rd and not the 2023 draft. But them same team that traded for him gave him a 7 year deal, that supports the poor decision making in NY, not Engvall's value. And you are using a trade that never happened to support Kerfoot's value? You are probably someone who argued that getting rid of Marleau would not have cost assets, or that dumping Mrazek would not have cost assets, simply because that player wore a maple leaf on the front of the jersey.

But I am willing to hear about all these teams are willing to give up a 2nd and 4th for a 5 million dollar, defensive defenseman, who is getting paid over 6 million in real dollars, is 33, has a modified no trade, and ended last year looking like his best days are behind him.
