In all fairness, it did state to any team. However, I highly doubt anyone is going to take a 33 year old defenseman, with a 5 million dollar cap hit, with little offensive upside, coming off that play off performance, for a high to mid round pick.

Leafs 2023-24 Trade Deadline Moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>bg77</b></div><div>Hello gmurrayt,
Thank you for letting me know. These trades I have here could only be made if we have a player who makes $1,000,000 or greater added to LTIR by the trade deadline through to the end of the season, which is very possible. We will have to see how the season unfolds!</div></div>
No, in order to bring in these 2 players while only sending back picks, you would need an additional 4,500,000 in salary on LTIR. (actually only about 4,200,000 since you had 300,000 to play with already from other LTIR space.)

Leafs 2023-24 Trade Deadline Moves
If you have players on LTIR you don't get to accumulate cap space. On March 9 Toronto would have $302,717 available, so you are not able to afford anyone, you need to have money out for money in (you have about 300,000 to play with for money in/money out differences)

Grabbing the low hanging fruit
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>You think Matt Murray would agree to this if he was healthy?</div></div>
Although I do think Murray is banged up enough that he deserves to be on LTIR, he absolutely benefits from agreeing to go on LTIR when he did. Now Toronto cannot buy him out and he will get his full salary, which was not going to happen if he was deemed healthy enough to be considered an active player. Now Murray will get his full salary, all paid to him this year, and will also get the benefit of working on getting back on his game while utilizing Toronto's facilities, at Toronto's expense. If Murray argued he was healthy, he would have been bought out, made less money, and spread over 2 years, and would have had to foot the fill for any training expenses in order get his game back in order.

This deal is extremely lopsided in Toronto's favour, but I must admit, I certainly laughed with the argument that the deal is good because it is not terribly lopsided, it is just kind of lopsided, so Buffalo should jump all over it. Not sure why anyone would think this is even a possibility, may want to look up what a full no trade clause means.

If Gio is chilling with Tre, I assume this means he has retired. As a 35+ signing, I believe that means his cap remains even if he retires, so now the issues really become compounded.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Based on what exactly? He's a wizard with his stick offensively and defensively. He has a real issue with consistent effort so he definitely isn't great defensively but he is nowhere near the worst defensively. The Leafs have literally picked up 3 worse defensively forwards this summer in bertuzzi, Domi, and Reaves.</div></div>
He is lazy at times and does not put the team first. There have been numerous instances in the play offs that have been highlighted where he just bails on a play because he doesn't want to sacrifice himself. And one of the most important requirements of play off hockey is to sacrifice for the team. How do you think the minimum wage players feel when they see that type of play, they say to themselves "why should I go out and sacrifice for the team if the so called super stars who make a lot more money aren't willing to do it." He has tons of skill and talent, but his actions on the ice too many times just scream "me first". That is the culture that a team needs to get rid of to be successful, and that is my guess why someone like ROR probably got out of dodge at the first opportunity, because he knew he mental make up of the team, and knew it is not the foundation of a Stanley Cup winner.

lets try this
If Vancouver had the space, why wouldn't they just sign Dumba, saving themselves cap space and a draft pick, as well as creating the terms of the deal that they are ok with. People making these Brodie trades have to realize that other teams in the NHL are not just there to serve Toronto. I saw almost the exact same type of trade to at least 2 other teams so Toronto could then sign a cheaper Dumba.

line ideas with the current roster
Your scratches are actually players that need to be sent down to be cap compliant. So you are now running with a 20 man roster, with only 6 D, one of them the oldest players in the league, another showing signs of deterioration and being on the wrong side of 30 as well. Timmins will likely be claimed when sent down, your only 2 roster players who are waiver exempt are Knies and Robertson, both making under a million and both forwards. Because your using LTIR you don't accumulate cap so you won't be able to gain cap space to add an additional player to the roster part way into the season. That defense as is is not cup contender worthy. And the biggest issue of all, what if Murray decides he is healthy enough to play in December. Unlike other LTIR players he has been compared to (Price, Weber, etc) he does not have a multi year contract that will continue to pay him. He needs to play at some point this year if he hopes to get any type of contract next year. Toronto is playing with fire in so many ways if they don't make some additional moves.

Brodie trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>leaffanio</b></div><div>lol 4th round pick. he had a rough series against florida but so did about half the roster, before that he was our undisputed best defensive defenceman just like he has been for the entirety of his contract. i love how rd is the most coveted position in the league, unless its a leaf rd in which case we gotta dump a first for the privilege of getting rid of him.
if the leafs had to "dump" brodie, they already would've bought him out because his cap hit would be $0. there's a big market for him even if you're too bitter to acknowledge it
i remember this website telling me the leafs were gonna have to move assets to dump engvall at the tdl because we were "so tight to the cap" last year. then he goes for a 3rd and gets a 7 year contract. same thing with kerfoot, who supposedly had negative value until it came out that st louis was willing to trade barbashev for him. funny how that works</div></div>
If Brodie was bought out his cap hit this year is 0, his cap hit next year is 2.5 million. Pretty big impact for a year that Toronto needs to sign 2 of their bigger contracts, and presumably with a Murray buyout on its way that is going to add another 2 million to next year's cap number. You probably think Toronto can still trade Murray for positive assets do you? I do admit that I didn't think Engvall would get a 3rd back, even if it was a future 3rd and not the 2023 draft. But them same team that traded for him gave him a 7 year deal, that supports the poor decision making in NY, not Engvall's value. And you are using a trade that never happened to support Kerfoot's value? You are probably someone who argued that getting rid of Marleau would not have cost assets, or that dumping Mrazek would not have cost assets, simply because that player wore a maple leaf on the front of the jersey.
But I am willing to hear about all these teams are willing to give up a 2nd and 4th for a 5 million dollar, defensive defenseman, who is getting paid over 6 million in real dollars, is 33, has a modified no trade, and ended last year looking like his best days are behind him.

2 years ago this may have been close to fair. Today, a defenseman who appears to be badly regressing, with a 5 million cap hit on a team that is badly over the cap, and an actual salary that is even higher than his cap hit, will be lucky to get a 4th round pick only. He is a borderline cap dump.

Giving Reaves that contract then immediately burying him in the minors? Forget about getting future free agents to come play in Toronto. Also, Reaves may be a upset enough that he retires, which sticks Toronto with his full cap hit for the next 3 years.

Except there is nothing to support Murray is qualified to go on LTIR. So a buy out requires almost 700,00 for him. Now if by some chance Murray is able to be put on LTIR before the season starts, what does Toronto do if he gets cleared to play part way into the season? And that defense as posted is not anywhere near Stanley Cup contender quality. Using Muzzin on LTIR means there is no accrual of salary through the season, so team, as is constructed today, is limited on what they will be able to do in season for trades. And using a 20 man roster. Yes, everything looks great, if you bet money on another early round knock out.

Based on how Brodie finished the year, this statement is debatable. Add on the players ages, the cap retention, the cap hit and and the actual dollar amounts of both players, along with the fact Toronto is negotiating from a position of weakness with the the need to become cap compliant, and their need to have a tough, mean defenseman in their line up, and one would could easily argue that the sweeteners need to be better.

This will not work. Murray was declared fit and ready to play at the end of last season, he looks destined for a buyout, and the first year is more then remaining cap space in this scenario, so at least one more move will need to be made.

Brodie at the end of last year looked terrible. He carries a 5 million cap hit and is owed even more in real money for the last year of his contract. What logical reason would Pitt make that trade with Toronto. If they truly feel they needed a D upgrade, they would just trade the same pick that Toronto did and get back the better, cheaper, younger, longer signed player, and save a pick in the process.

Brodie is also the Leafs 2nd best dman. I have very little interest in trading him for a 3rd (or at all for that matter).
I know a lot of Anaheim fans say they would pass on this trade, but Brodie would be a great add and they can easily re-sell him for more at the deadline with retention.</div></div>
Why wouldn't Anaheim just go out and sign Dumba themselves. Doing that saves themselves a draft pick, cap space, real cash, and depending on the terms they set with Dumba, aren't hindered with a NTC trying to trade him at the deadline if they wish to do so.

Based on how Brodie finished the year and into the playoffs, coupled with his salary and cap hit, makes him a borderline cap dump. He is going to have to prove that last year was not age catching up to him. Until he does that, or Toronto retains significant cap, he is not getting anything close to a 3rd.
