So Thats It Eh
This will not work. Murray was declared fit and ready to play at the end of last season, he looks destined for a buyout, and the first year is more then remaining cap space in this scenario, so at least one more move will need to be made.

Leafs Revised Again
Brodie at the end of last year looked terrible. He carries a 5 million cap hit and is owed even more in real money for the last year of his contract. He is not getting anything close to this return, if you want to move him, you need to set your expectations much, much lower on the return you will get.

Calgary has lots of cap space do they? And they give up multiple useful assets, plus take on 2 ugly contracts, for 1 year of Nylander? This is not realistic at all.

If that is the type of package being offered to San Jose, no one has to worry about EK coming to Toronto.

Nylander trade
What logical reason would Pitt make that trade with Toronto. If they truly feel they needed a D upgrade, they would just trade the same pick that Toronto did and get back the better, cheaper, younger, longer signed player, and save a pick in the process.

Brodie is also the Leafs 2nd best dman. I have very little interest in trading him for a 3rd (or at all for that matter).
I know a lot of Anaheim fans say they would pass on this trade, but Brodie would be a great add and they can easily re-sell him for more at the deadline with retention.</div></div>
Why wouldn't Anaheim just go out and sign Dumba themselves. Doing that saves themselves a draft pick, cap space, real cash, and depending on the terms they set with Dumba, aren't hindered with a NTC trying to trade him at the deadline if they wish to do so.

Based on how Brodie finished the year and into the playoffs, coupled with his salary and cap hit, makes him a borderline cap dump. He is going to have to prove that last year was not age catching up to him. Until he does that, or Toronto retains significant cap, he is not getting anything close to a 3rd.

Don't forget about the added benefit of retaining 2 million/year for 4 years. It is like 80% of the leafs trades on here are based on the belief that all other teams in the NHL are there solely to help Toronto out of their constant cap mismanagement.

I don't disagree with that assessment, but have to point out that the only difference now is instead of AD, Toronto will have Gio to take the 6th spot. Toronto still has a lot of work to do in order to ice a complete team.

5 reasons why the Leafs can and should buy out Matt Murray
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>To start the next offseason, you will have over 40 million in cap space with the cap going up to 87.5 million.
Let's say Matthews signs for 13 million per, making him the highest paid player in the league.
That leaves the Leafs with 27 million in cap space.
I wouldn't worry about it.</div></div>
That last line sums up why Toronto has not done anything in the last 6 years despite having some great talent to build around. Not worrying about having cap space to fill in the rest of the roster. Also, no one, not even the most ardent Toronto fan, thinks Samsonov is going to sign for anything close to 2 million. And that blue line as it stands is going to get pushed around all day in its own end.

TreeLeafing Part 2
At this point Kressler alone does not return a 4th, forget another pick and that cap dump called Murray that will likely take at least a 2nd to move. And Timmins is not getting you anything close to a 3rd. There is some serious over valuing here.

Leafs blockbuster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>EichelTower9</b></div><div>What? Tanev is a solid shutdown D-man, but is injury prone. Brodie on the other hand is a reliable 2-way D man and superb skater, one of the best defensively. The only reason TML does this is for cap space.</div></div>
I assume you didn't watch the last part of the season for Toronto. Brodie is in decline and at this point with his cap hit, he will not fetch very much in a trade. Cap space is worth a lot this year, I doubt teams are not going to eat multiple millions in cap space at this point for a 4th. Especially for a team that is in a cap jam and is dealing from a position of weakness.

shake up
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>There’s lot of questionable trade proposals from other team’s fans too, so ‘pump the brakes’ on Leaf bashing. But I agree - gotta think Tre has something cooking, otherwise FA signings (especially Klingberg) don’t make a ton of sense given cap situation. But nothing is happening right now because so few teams have cap space; hope bettman & owners are happy - they’ve created the worst salary situation in pro sports.</div></div>
Most trades will likely have to involve salary in = salary out, or close to it. Tre is also dealing from a point of weakness because he has to do something, and all other teams know it. Not only does he have to get under the cap, but he also has to improve the defensive core. This may sound contradictive, but Toronto will likely have to make a trade they will probably not "win" in order to make their overall team better. That will likely involve trading Nylander for some type of top 4 defensive defenseman.

The worse thing about Toronto signing Domi and Bertuzzi is that it puts them in a serious cap crunch so now we have lots of Leaf fans all thinking that every other NHL team must help them get out of the mess with lopsided trades.

Leafs right up against the cap
Highly doubt Samsonov signs for that, especially if he has that group of 6 playing defense in front of him. Still lots of off season left yet, have to think that a trade will be done to free up some cap space to allow them to carry at least one extra roster player, and also add a mean, tough defenseman who focuses on his own end first and can expect to play 75+ games a year.

Leafs Possible Options
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>whatsmyageagain281</b></div><div>Good one.</div></div>
You actually have a point. Upon further reflection, it would cost at least a 2nd, probably more to dump Murray. Timmins is worth a 7th, Voit maybe a mid round pick if being generous. So upon closer review, Nashville likely would not do this deal even if Fabbro was replaced by the very popular future considerations.

This is definitely a more balanced and tougher set of forwards. However, no one is going to take Murray for that small of a compensation package knowing Toronto is in a cap crunch, that defensive group is not going to cut it, and a 20 man roster is not going to work. I think Nylander and cap dumping Murray for a tough, rugged Dman makes Toronto a cup favorite. Even with that, they still need to find some defensive depth.

Do I really have to spell this out? That if Shanahan vetoed trades he didn't agree with, then he gave the final approval on if a trade could be done. He DID NOT veto trades he agreed to, he DID veto trades that he disagreed with. Is it really that hard for you to understand who had the ultimate say in all trades? You yourself posted that Shanahan vetoed trades. So explain to me how Shanahan didn't have the final say while at the same time he had the power to veto trades he didn't agree to.
