Nope, I get. People who think that the leafs win this trade are the same type of people who are ok with the leafs losing to their own Zamboni driver.

*edit looks like you just signed him. Well either has some other plans on D or he dropped the ball here.</div></div>
With Liljegren, Hollowell, Duszak, J. Subban, Lindgren and E. Rasanen maybe Dubas feels he has enough Right hand D prospects now, and need left. Went from one extreme to another. But from all I read they did try to sign Kaski, he was just more familiar with Detroit from his college days.

Detroit should be announcing the Kaski signing shortly, maybe Teemu is consolation

Leafs Pietrangelo Toughness
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>superbrett</b></div><div>This. It will take at least Kapanen, Liljigren a 1st and another piece or two especially if the Leafs are looking to dump a contract like Zaitsev's. Look at the Mcdonaugh trade between Tampa and NYR last year as a template. Pietrangelo is more valuable then McDonagh. Although and the Leafs wouldn't be able to take on a JT Miller type while also looking to dump Zaitsev's contract. If they were to mirror the NYR/Tampa trade from last year:
Liljigren (I think he is a better prospect then Howden who was either #2 or 3 in Tampa's top 10 last year, although I may have my Leaf glasses on)
Kapanen (On par with Namestikov coming from a life long London Knights Fan)
Adam Brooks (I couldn't find Libor Hajek on any top prospect list and I don't really know much about him. Brooks is the 12th top prospect for Toronto according to leafsnation)
2020 1st round pick (2019 is gone)
2020 2nd round pick (become 1st in 2021 if Toronto wins SC)
For
Pietrangelo (Better than McDonagh)
If Robby Fabbri was better or Jaden Schwarz was worse
As it stands they DO need to add that Cap Dump and they can't afford another forward contract back that doesn't expire at the end of this year. It'd be a tough one to get done. Maybe they don't need to add the conditional 1st/prospect and take back someone like Pat Maroon(another London Knight Alum!) So it would be:
Liljigren, Kapanen, Zaitsev 2020 1st round Pick 2019 3rd round pick
For
Pietrangelo, Maroon
Is that fair or do the Leafs need to add more? I know Maroon has a limited NTC. I tried to follow that trade template from last year. I don't know if Zaitsev is at the place where he has negative value yet but for this trade to work he needs to be traded. Maybe each team could take $1 mil back so the he is only $3.5 mil for the next 5ish years?</div></div>
I think that the above trade equates to Pietrangelo + cap dump for Zaitsev, THREE 1st round picks, a 2nd (potentially ANOTHER 1st), and a 4th?
Only 1 of the firsts should be required (Kapanen, Liljegren or the pick) IMO.

Is Trading Mathews a Bad thing
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I don't get it....for a decade the Leafs were trash, never had a legit #1 centre and we would all cling to the unrealistic hope that the next great toronto-born UFA would sign here to save us.
Leafs finally bottom out...draft themselves 3 studs in Nylander, Marner and Matthews...becomes competitive enough to finally convince the superstar hometown kid to sign here as a UFA....and now that it's time to pay these guys...we want to trade them away for futures? Why? The cap space? Let's enjoy what we have for a change
I'm fine if you love Necas and Bean but, IMO, this is poor asset management</div></div>
It is a tough one. Are his contract demands going to blow the cap and make the team less competitive next season? Are the reports from Mckenzie and Freidman true and Matthews only willing to look at a short term contract to get to UFA? Matthews seems hard to read …. he has looked uninspired in stretches this year and last year. Is it Babcock? Is he injured? I would be worried that if he is offered a max offer sheet this summer, he would accept.

They are cap compliant, however this tool doesn't calculate cap space on a prorated basis like the main page does. Their cap space multiplies as the season progresses.</div></div>
Yes, I missed that cap space is cumulative and calculated daily, which explains why they are so diligent is sending trevor moore down on off days. I wonder if the choice to trade Leivo over Holl or Marincin also had to do with his cap hit being higher.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>Yep. Gimme a sec I need to find the link for the schedule A bonuses. There’s a bunch of categories worth $212,500 each and you can earn a max of 4 of them for a total of $850k. Categories and targets differ based on FW or DEF.
Matthews’ $2m performance B bonus is based on articles from sports writers which I haven’t been able to verify, but the consensus seemed to be top 10 in ppg or Gpg were his most attainable targets.</div></div>
It will be harder for Oz to hit his if he is benched the rest of the year lol.

Leafs need either Dermott or Rosen to take over for Gardiner next year. If neither of them can, then one of the core forwards has to get moved to stay under the cap.

I think that is way too much of an overpay from the leafs. Zaitsev, Johnsson and a 1st for Petriangelo is the most the leafs should be considering IMO. For Nylander, Johnsson and a 1st I would hope for a bigger return with a winger (Sanford / Kyrou) and later round draft picks coming back.
