Any takers
Just because he was scratched for one game when they're desperate for a win, I don't think they're giving up on him.
Looking at the lines, it looks to me like they want to free Danault's line up to play more a more offensive and have Evans' line takeover some of the shutdown role; something he's better at than KK.
Jack Han did an interesting <a href="https://jhanhky.substack.com/p/getting-up-to-speed-with-kotkaniemi" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">review on KK</a> that's worth a read.
Personally, I think the Habs probably slowed his development by bringing him up too early, but he's still got lots of time to keep improving. If the Habs want to be real contenders for the next several years, they'll need 2C a lot more than some wingers.

Habs blow it up
If some of these trades were possible, it might be worth it, but there's almost no chance they can move Weber or Price's contracts. And in Price's case, the insane recapture penalty they'd face if he retires before he's 38 means they probably shouldn't even try.
They most likely will be a bubble team next season, but if KK can continue to develop to the point where he can be a true 2C and Berge can get him a better offensive winger than Byron, they have a good chance of making the playoffs. Price will be a huge question of course, but that's what Allen (or his replacement if he's taken) is for.
Add a PMD that can be a threat on the PP and this is a solid team.

Next season
I like Arima, but he's not worth giving up a first for. Better off letting Arima walk and keeping Byron and the first.
Besides, there's no cap space to sign Suzuki. Move Byron at the end of the season when he's on his last year and cheaper to move/buy out.

Habs offseason
I like the team, but I just don't think there's enough money to go around.
First, you need to bump Lehkhonen up a bit, his QO is 2.2m.
I also don't see St. Louis taking Byron. If you replace him with Brook in that deal, they'd probably take it. If we assume Byron gets moved in another deal for a draft pick, and Kulak walks at the end of the season, that leaves you around $5m to sign Suzuki, Patrick, Evans and Romanov.
Have to sacrifice a bit to free up at least a couple million more in cap space and then it might be a gamble on signing Caufield the next year. Also worth keeping in mind that the Habs have 4 NCAA prospects that could potentially sign at the end of their season and they may want the cap space to give at least one of them some NHL time.
Wonder if we can convince Price to go on LTIR until the playoffs...

I can't see the Habs taking on Butcher without retained salary. Even then, they're probably better off resigning Gustafsson or giving one of their prospects a chance.

A 3rd and a 5th or a late 2nd sounds about right to me. Though I have to think if they move him, they'd prefer to do it as part of a package for a scoring LW or PMD.

Seems like the Habs would just be giving away that first for no reason. You've got enough cap space to keep Byron on as a depth guy and he'll be cheaper to move in the next season when he's on his last year (they need the cap space then). Though Lehkonen needs to be bumped up to at least 2.2m to meet his QO.
It'd be a shame to give away Harris. I've got to think it wouldn't be hard to convince Seattle to take a 26 year old top six winger as long as he's ready to play again.

Habs fans who would you be intersted in bringing in next season
Cap space is going to be the major factor in what they do. If Danualt is resigned and Drouin is back in the lineup or he's replaced by a similar cap hit, about the only way they have money to sign Suzuki, Evans and Romanov is by letting Chiarot and Kulak walk and replacing them with ELCs or similar cap hits. That also probably means letting Armia walk, which is definitely going to hurt after the playoffs he's had.
I'd really like to see them get a good scoring LW and a PMD, but they'd probably have to avoid the big names and go for guys like Copp, Foegele or maybe DeBrusk (if they think they can sign him at a good number). On D, Dunn would be good if the trade price doesn't go too high.
I could see Bergevin signing guys like Janmark and Goligoski to short term deals to bridge the gap until some of their prospects that will be coming in the next 2-3 seasons are ready.

Need to make moves
Deangelo cleared waivers and they couldn't even get an AHL team to take him because of how toxic he is. There was a rumor the Habs were going to deal for him and the fan base practically exploded. Bergevin has to be crazy to sign that guy.
For the rest, I mean McGinn is a solid player, but I'm not sure he's worth a 2nd, 4th, Fleury and Kulak more than Byron. Losing Drouin for a rental (because they don't have the money to resign Risto) would definitely sting, but it might be the best deal available. I'd want to look at every other option first though.

Lines for Game 3
I mean, they're the underdogs for a reason. The Bolts lineup reads like an all-star team and they've been here before. The Habs main offensive line has a 21 year old center and a 20 year old winger that was playing NCAA 2 months ago. Even if they get swept (which I don't think they will), it's been a hell of a run. The Bolts looked pretty beatable last night though. Just need to get some offense going.
As for the lines: Suzuki was 60% in the dot last night and that line generated a number of good chances. Arima was a huge boost because he's so good with puck possession especially on the PK. I can't see them making any changes to the lineup, but if they do, it's likely bringing Tatar in for Lehkonen or Byron, but I doubt it.

Just not enough money for these moves. Lehkonen's QO is 2.2m, so that puts you well over the cap even if you don't carry 3 goalies.
I can't see Tatar coming back at this point. He's been a healthy scratch for nearly the entire playoff run.
Ristolainen would be a nice upgrade for the 3rd pairing, but they couldn't afford to resign him with Suzuki needing a new deal. Giving up Evans for a rental is a hefty price.
Mysak is probably 2-3 years away from being NHL ready (he just turned 19).

For the Habs to move Chiarot, it would probably have to be as part of a deal for McCann or Zucker (or Marino, but I don't see Pits moving him).

The Habs most likely reject that trade. They have a ton of LD prospects and would likely want a scoring LW, like Wood or Zacha, if they moved Chiarot.

Next Step Offseason
Been seeing a lot of trading Chiarot after last nights game, but Pettersson isn't an upgrade and arguably a downgrade since he isn't nearly as physical. The Habs also can't take on his term. In this scenario you'd only have ~$3 million to sign Suzuki, Evans and Romanov, then Caufield the next year.
Combine that with downgrading from Lehkonen to Archibald and its a net worse team, in my opinion.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsFuture</b></div><div>Do you think Graves out of COL is a better PMD option?</div></div>
Rafferty is a gamble that costs next to nothing and has high potential rewards.
Graves would be good if they could get him without giving up too many prospects or Dunn from St. Louis, but it could also make sense to sign an older guy like Goligoski to buy time until Harris or Norlinider are ready to step in. The hard part for Bergevin will be finding some scoring help while leaving enough cap space for Suzuki and Caufield.

I think there's been way too much emphasis on moving Byron's contract. Back at the trade deadline it might have have been worth it if it got a PMD or scoring LW, but at this point it just doesn't make sense. While guys like Armia and Lehkonen are good bottom 6 players, is the difference between them and Byron worth spending a first (much less a first and 2 NHL ready prospects)?
Unless they find a team that's willing to take Byron for a midround pick, the Habs are better off letting Armia walk or trading Lehkonen (both are likely underpaid in this scenario anyway, with Lehkonen needing at least another $200k to meet his QO) and riding out Byron's contract for at least one more year, when it will become far cheaper to move him or buy him out.

Keep the deep 4 lines going
That feels like a <em>lot</em> to give up for a 32 year old winger at 4.5m. A package like that is getting into Sam Reinhart territory. I'd much rather keep Poehling and see if he's NHL ready this year, then try to sign a UFA like Saad, Schwartz, Janmark or Coleman. Or maybe try to trade for a guy like Copp, Foegele or DeBrusk; they might be more of a gamble, but they're a lot cheaper and young enough to still be around when Suzuki, KK and Caufield are hitting their primes.
It'd be great to get Seth Jones, but only if its a sign-and-trade. Giving up all that for a rental would be nuts. Even then, I feel like Farrell has a chance to be a really special player and, while he might fizzle out and not amount to much, it just feels like a lotto ticket that's worth hanging on to.

Dreaming dont at me lol Still what you think
It'd definitely be a tough team to face and addresses a couple of the biggest needs on the team. I'd love to see a big gun like Landeskog on the left wing, but realistically I doubt he leaves Colorado and signing him to a big contract like that would make it pretty hard to sign Suzuki and Caulfield as their contracts come up. Cheaper options like Schwartz or Janmark seem more likely or possibly trading for someone a team is going to lose to Seattle like Duclair.
I like Manson on D, but I think resigning him is just going to be too expensive as long as Weber and Petry are around. What about going for someone like Fabbro; he's young enough to be cheap and Nashville will likely lose him in the expansion draft if they don't move him. Fabbro doesn't have the size that the Habs like on their blueline, but does have the puck-moving skills they need for the powerplay.

Can Drouin produce
I don't think its a question of <em>if</em> he can produce, but more about what's best for Drouin. Montreal media and fans are hard on any player, more so on a Quebec born player and most of all on a player that was brought in to be the franchise player. If the Habs can win the cup this year, that might cut him some slack for a bit, but honestly he's probably better off going to an American market where no one is going to recognize him walking down the street or shopping for groceries.

Keep seeing people saying he "quit on the team", but can't say I agree with that. I'm not sure I'd say Bobby Ryan "quit" on the Sens or that Robin Lehner "quit" on the Sabers -- we don't know the details around Drouin's absence yet, so saying he "quit on the team" is probably a bit much.
As for Tampa, saying he "quit on the team" might be harsh, but a reasonable opinion to have; many people felt the same about Dubois this year.
Drouin's value is definitely low right now and I doubt any team touches his contract without some details on his situation first. If he's going to be back and healthy, he's a 26 year old, half-point a game player with elite passing skills but trouble scoring. At 5.5m cap hit, he's a bit overpriced and Seattle might want a pick to take the contract, but not a 1st. Worst case, I think Montreal would have to retain a couple of million on his contract to trade him. Though I expect there would be a good number of teams interested in him and willing to take the full cap hit to give up slightly less in return. We'll probably find out for sure in about a month.

Improving With Cap Space

Yeah, I'm probably overvaluing Lehkonen because he's been so good in the playoffs, but I do think he's valuable player and would help St. Louis. Does replacing the 4th with Josh Brook make it fair?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Devil1122</b></div><div>Not enough for Wood. It would take a big overpayment to get him out of NJ. Butcher for Chairot swap is more likely</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Habs have enough young d-men in their pipeline to send young d-man along with some cap to NJD for Wood.
NJD needs young, defensive or two-way guys. L or R.
Preferably with skillsets that help break-out success rate and add to possession game.
(I know Habs have aimed for similar approach, so am guessing there are options that fit).</div></div>
Harris and Struble would fit that mould, but Harris has the option of going UFA at the end of the collage year and Struble is still a couple of years out. Norlinder would likely be the most valuable D prospect the Habs have, tho he's more of an offensive PMD and might spend another year in the SHL. Cale Fleury would be the best fit on the defensive side, but his stock is fairly low at the moment.
As for Butcher, I can't see him as a fit on the Habs at his cap hit. At half that, he'd probably be worth taking a chance on to see if he has a bounce back year, but Chiarot's grinding out 20+ minutes a night on the top pairing in the Stanley Cup semi finals, so it's hard to see them doing a swap.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Taz</b></div><div>The D-core is better with Chiarot than Dunn</div></div>
I don't agree. The Habs are running their top-4 into the ground to keep a guy like Gustafsson in the lineup to give them some offense from the blueline. While Dunn's had his struggles defensively, he's far more capable than Gus and would likely do well in the Habs system. Also, while the big lumbering D has worked great in the playoffs, the Habs have to actually make the playoffs next season, which will be hard in their division if they can't move the puck out of their zone.
I really like Chiarot and would rather keep him, but I think improving the LW and getting PMD is more important. Then again, this just an ACGM, so who cares what I think?

This definitely feels like a worst case scenario as far as Habs prospects go.
This is for the 23-24 season, so hopefully Yelonen, RHP, Mysak, Hillis and maybe Farrell can fill some of those forward spots.
On D, Brook, Guhle, Harris and Struble should all be NHL ready.
I do like the optimism for Suzuki tho. He'll have to play great next year to get that contract.
