The value for Byron might be fair but I still think Detroit should say no.
The Staal deal brought as a 2nd AND a player we needed. Byron is a bottom-6 winger and Detroit already have enough of those. If Byron was to be given a roster spot then someone else would have to be waived and risk being lost. I'd rather play Svechnikov and Smith, players that may have a future, over Byron that we know doesn't.
That would mean that Byron would have to be sent to GR for two years. Now the return of a very late 1st. (30% chance of becoming a NHL player) doesn't compare well with the 2nd for Staal (25% chance of becoming a NHL player). It's twice the $$ for twice the time and only a 5% higher chance to get a NHL player in return.
If I was was to be enticed to take on Byron the deal would have to include a prospect that has a good chance of making the roster in a year or two.
Byron + Romanov +2nd or Byron + 1st + Brook or Byron + Romanov + Brook are what would make me consider it. If MTL thinks that's too high then I'd simply say no thanks and use the cap on a more interesting target like Tyler Johnson which is a much better fit for us since we need a 2C.
