<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>“Don’t be an idiot”?!? I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that. Starting off a reply to an analysis of your obviously muddled math (which becomes even more adrift in the body of your comment) with “Don’t be an idiot” marks <strong>you</strong> as the moron, Sparky. Almost 50 years old and you want to come off sounding like a snot-nosed ignorant teenager?</div></div>
Nothing muddled about my math. We are perfectly fine with the cap. The "you guys can't afford him" when we are sitting at 25 million in cap space was the most idiotic thing that started it all. It is just a really stupid comment that deserved any and all retorts. No one knows who else we are going to sign, including you. Or whether we trade Leddy or sign a couple of one year deals that will open up more space (Flip, etc)...absolutely ignorant to make that claim this early in the offseason

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Next summer Martin ($2.5) and Greiss ($3.333M) come off the books; let's assume the cap goes up $3.5M. That makes $9.333M in cap space. Assume Barzal re-ups at $8,863,333 for a net increase of $8M. That leaves $1.333M left over to re-sign Pulock and Toews <strong>plus</strong> fill the two open roster slots. Even moving Nick Leddy probably won't get the job done. Bottom line: you guys can't afford Marner.</div></div>
Don't be an idiot. We are perfectly fine with the cap if we spend 80 plus million. Of course we are moving Leddy and that is 5.5 million right there. Like you mentioned, both Martin and Greiss come off the books, so that is 12 million. Komarov is an almost guaranteed buyout candidate, which is another 2 (hardly hurts us at all). That is 14 (and cap increase probably puts us at 17) before we even dabble at moving anyone else like Hickey, Clutterbuck, Beau, Bailey or eat some money to move Boychuk.
Barzal (9), Pulock (6) and Toews (3) are probably costing us 18, so we are almost there before it even begins. We are fine

He really tailed off last season after being traded, so I would expect his contract to come in somewhere between 4-5 years and 4-5 million. Maybe someone offers him 5/25 but I would be shocked if he gets a 6-year offer. 4/18 is probably where he will wind up and I wasn't too far from that

Hainsey only played last year because he was in Toronto. He’s not that good. He’s a 1-1.5m player. You think he should be making more than Chara?
Skinner scored 40 goals. 40 goals will get you 8.5+ no matter your assist total.</div></div>
It's another body in case Aho/Dobson struggle on Boychuk gets hurt again. Could be anyone in that 1-3 million range.
As for Skinner, I got you down from 9 to 8.5 (which is only 600,000 from where I had him) after just two comments, so you are hurting your argument. That being said I welcome using the 1.5 I overpaid on Hainsey going to Skinner's salary then lol

That’s too much money for Hainsey.</div></div>
Montreal doesn't need Shaw but could easily trade a 1 and him for Leddy. They badly need DEF help and he is from there. That is a more than fair offer (minus the 5th rounder if you want). Hainsey will get a 3 million offer somewhere because he had a really good year. If it is under 3, great....but he made that last year so even though he is 38, the amount isnt far off. Most predictors have Panarin getting 10-11, Duchene 9-10 and Skinner (who has never had 65+ points in a season) getting right at 8-8.5. No one has him getting 9 plus lol

There is 20 million in cap room for the following season. Not counting a likely Komarov buyout. We will have plenty for those three....as a matter of fact, I wouldnt be opposed to a structured 1-2 million deal for Toews now like we did with Mayfield...

Could something like this happen
Why would you want to invest so much in a RD. We have Pulock and Dobson/Wilde on the way....we need to be upgrading our offense. Trade Leddy/Hickey and make room for the younger guys. Extend Toews now, Pulock next season and get Aho into the fold this season and Dobson and then Wilde the next two years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ichbinian</b></div><div>I absolutely love the forward lines, but the D is very disappointing.</div></div>
That makes no sense, as the NYI under Trotz' system gave up the fewest goals in the league last season...and you are subtracting Leddy and Hickey (our two worse defenders) while adding Gunnarson and Aho (who is ready); not to mention having Dobson knocking on the door perhaps as early as next season....

Clutterbuck is all but untradeable right now as is Komarov for that matter. Bring the same offense back and yet totally change up our defense just for the sake of tinkering (not to upgrade offense)....did you see why we excelled this year but struggled in the playoffs?? Based on these moves, I would guess not

Greiss shared the Jennings and is a whole lot better than Koskinen, whom the Oilers f**ed up by giving him a big contract. It does say ideal though and you are probably right that it would cost a little more. Still think Ho-Sang just needs a change of scenery and has value

Beau isnt getting that kind of dough (2 yrs/5 million maybe), no need to re-up with Sorokin until we know his intentions, pass on Stevens, someone is going to offer Eberle more years than 3 sorry to say and counting on anything from Ladd at this juncture is foolishness (esp on your top line)....ntm promoting non-scorers Casey and Clutter to your third line doesn't help your offense any....in other words, barf city...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sammy_daws1997</b></div><div>$2M+ is not nothing and there is always someone willing to take bad contracts. Between the 2 of them its as much as you would save by trading Nylander and you arent trading top end players.
Everyone loves to hate the leafs and are quick to say they cant keep everyone, and sure they have some problems rn but they wont lose any of their core. After this year they will get $6.5M of cap space just from marleau alone and all the big guys will be locked up. This year is the only year where it will be hard and Dubas wont sacrifice the future for 1 year of possible success.</div></div>
you are in denial....you are likely losing Nylander or Kadri if you want to keep Marner, who is going to want his 10-11 million and may even be given an offer sheet. You aren't likely to trade Zaitsev when both Gardiner and Hainsey are UFA's and you dont have anyone else as depth behind Reilly and Muzzin. You are 5 million under the projected cap of 83 million (kind estimate) and that is with only 17 players. You arguably need two defensemen, and you have three RFA's (besides Marner but including Kapenen) that needs to get paid.
No, in all likelihood two of your three gunners (Nylander, Kadri, Kapenen) are gone if you are going to pay Marner, to say nothing about upgrading your blue line.....period
