Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 6 - Nearly Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Jim Balsille made an attempt to bring the Coyotes (or was it Nashville) to Hamilton much later than 1992...I'm guessing 2004. The city of Hamilton made a presentation in 1990 at the expansion meeting, but no owner, put up even 100,000 dollars to make a presentation. Hey I think a Hamilton team would have been successful, but obviously people with money.Ron Joyce of Tim Hortons. was a candidate didn't want to pony up the money.
As we saw with the Sens, and their expansion team, it was shell game, based upon the arena and real estate. Ottawa was lucky to hold onto their franchise the later owners bailed out the bankrupt Sens.
Even Tampa had financial problems with their initial owner. They were bailed out by the current owner too.
A former business associate, talked about bringing a team to Markham Ontario. He had the money for a franchise, (in the Seattle expansion) but wanted the city of Markham to give him the land for an arena, and to pay any operating deficients for the arena. The city said no.
Don Cherry? Don't know if relying facts in his book. Don is just is trying to portray his "blue collar image" of defending Canada and the people of Hamilton. The folks in Hamilton still blame Leafs ownership for whatever reason.</div></div>
Hamilton was an option for Balsile but if I'm remembering correctly, he actually wanted to move the team to Kitchener-Waterloo.
Remember NYI ownership issues before Charles Wong took over? Yeah disastrous.
Before Pittsburgh got Crosby/Malkin/the new arena there was talk of the Penguins leaving Pittsburgh.
Before Terry Pegula took over the Buffalo Sabres, they heading towards relocation too.
All under Gary Bettman. It's time...move on Gary.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsForLife</b></div><div>By alienating groups of people, are you referring to Canadian hockey fans? I know a team in Hamilton or Quebec City would bring in a lot more revenue than Arizona and maybe other existing teams. As for "inclusivity", it depends on what you mean. If you're referring to the "Pride Nights", remember that they were a disaster last season and Provorov jerseys sold out after he stood up against it.</div></div>
Pride Nights, Canadian hockey fans, the handling of the presence of racism at various levels within the NHL.
These things are all encompassing and really very easy to address but instead we have players leading the charge on these issues where the league should be the one taking the charge, especially if NHL HQ really believes that the league and sport is globally for everyone.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>It's immensely insane to call Woll inconsistent but give Sammy a pass. The only thing Sammy is 100% consistent at is giving up bad goals and sometimes floundering all together. Just look at his career playoff numbers. Even vs Tampa he had 2 really bad games. Vs Florida his numbers looked better but terrible goals killed him. He's not trust worthy. Never has been and this season is an exclamation point on that. It's nuts how everyone just ignores that.</div></div>
I was one of the first to call Sammy inconsistent but I'm also not blind to that either. Ride the hot hand until it's not hot. Woll has been inconsistent since his injury and no doubt he's the goalie of the future but game 1 starter is pretty clear.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I'm no fan of Bettman and the NHL executive. But the facts are the NHL owners, hire Bettman and his cronies. The owners have to power to get another commish. The NHL owners are the ones vote to allow franchises to join the league. Unfortunately there are so many owners who got into the league because of Bettman, they are his allies. Plus NHL owners just love dividing up the expansion fees with no respect that failing franchises cost money eventually.</div></div>
I realize that, it's just too bad these owners don't have long-term vision for success regarding franchises because if they did, they would make more money via fees, gate and TV revenue, nevermind the merchandise sales. It requires patience and vetting potential owners properly as opposed to what Bettman and company have done.
There's not just expansion failures. This commissioner can't even get inclusivity right which BTW would help bring in more revenue but hey, let's alienate groups of people based on how business has been conducted in the past.
A big eff you to that Arizona franchise.

In the end Woll has been struggling recently and should be no where near the starting job rn especially for the playoffs. Had an okay game tonight but still shaky at times and considering all factors his place is the backup rn.
You go with the goalie whose been hot as of late and its been Samsonov

Last year, earlier this season, his entire career to this point.....none of it matters because a hot streak between his collapses is all you see eh? Woll is the future and he is playing good and better with each game. He's also better and more consistent than Samsonov. More poised, better positionally and doesn't really get rattled like Samsonov does. Sammy isn't leading the team to a cup, Woll is the guy they hope does that for years to come. Starting Sammy is a mistake

You saw who he put after right; Kampf-Matthews-Nylander</div></div>
I mean this with the most respect possible...but WTF is a coach doing that THIS late in the season?
It's one thing to try things early in the season to try to find things that work, it's completely different with 10-ish games left. All I'm saying is...things should already be figured out and it's supposed to be about locking down on good habits so that when the playoffs begin, it's second nature and it's not something players are still iffy about.
It's maddening...

Since coming back from injury its been yikes and a half lets be real
3 of his last 4 starts first shot on net oh its in...We can blame ABC, how about make a save as man its a momentum killer and u can just tell how the game's gonna go. He honestly is reminding me of Sammy before the waivers and its concerning rn.
Honestly why i'm leaning to bringing back Sammy on a 1-2 year deal
As people were going Woll/Hildeby or Woll/Murray or Woll/Jones as the tandem next year
Oh boy NTU lul.
Woll's got a bright future but man rn he aint it especially come game 1 against whoever we face
Like for me just bringing back the same trio and Hildeby at 4 is fine</div></div>
Idon't think it's a guarantee that Sammy comes back, especially if he plays well in the remaining games and plays well in the playoffs. He may prioritize getting a big payday coming from having a season where he was actually on waivers but bounced back.
Also...he is an inconsistent goaltender. It's what he was in Washington and here it's been the same story so unless he comes back at the same cap hit as he is now, Leafs might be looking at other options.
Now as far as Jones goes...same deal to be the 3rd goalie, no problems with that.

Maybe coping isn’t the right word but there sure are a lot of #LeafsForever fans who are ok with the lack of a big addition (RD, C) this team needed.
For those who wanted (me) this team to stand pat at the deadline because they just have too many holes and got criticized for, those same people are now saying “well it’s up to the core 4 anyways, it’s ok they made depth adds”
Tomato tomato 🤷♂️

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NorthernLeafsFan05</b></div><div>So lets say the Leafs go out and get a guy like Jensen at the TDL. Where does that leave Liljegren? Lyubushkin was deliberately acquired with double retention, so I think he's definitely going to be a frequently dressed player for the Leafs. McCabe has been utilized at RD a lot recently, and then the new guy (in this case Jensen) would presumably slot in next to Mo. So whats the deal with Lili? Do we see another Sandin-like trade? Does he get dealt to a team like Minnesota (who are reportedly willing to trade a guy like Dewar)?
I really dont want to trade him, but it seems far too likely at this point. If we were planning on using him, there wouldn't be such a huge emphasis on getting another defenseman. I think his time here is coming to an end. Sending him to Minnesota for Dewar and a 2nd would be fine</div></div>
I'd fire Tre on the spot if he suggested making a fairly lateral swap on D to go from Lily to Jensen, making the big add on D Boosh and simultaneously getting WAY older.

I 100% agree, I just have no idea what the Leafs are trying to do here with Liljegren. Slight typo in my post as well, I meant something like Dewar and a 1st (thus the comparison to Sandin). Keefe's constant belittling of guys like Robertson and Liljegren is extremely infuriating. Give the guys an actual spot and quit screwing around with their deployment every game. Not sure why Keefe doesn't just pair Liljegren with Rielly, to me that is the obvious solution to our problems.

Also with Kaliyev reportedly being shopped, I would have major interest in bringing him in as well. Physical scorer that can fill Robertson's niche. Thats a guy that is due to break out any time soon, and Roy can be easily extended by Toronto. Id be super happy with a deal like that</div></div>
To add to this, Roy + Kaliyev and then a Duclair trade would set this roster up very nicely. Roy would be 50% retained by a third team to make the cap work, and the trade packages would largely consist of picks + non-roster players (like Abruzzese, Timmins, maybe but hopefully not Steeves, etc.) with the exception of Robertson
Bertuzzi - Matthews - Nylander
Duclair - Tavares - Marner
Knies - Domi - Kaliyev
Holmberg - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Rielly - Roy
McCabe - Liljegren
Benoit - Brodie
Woll
Samsonov
That is a roster with ample secondary scoring and a pretty stout defensive group. Duclair and Marner would be a dangerous duo

The cameras in that arena are closer to ice level than all the other arenas in the league. Of course it's also a minor league arena so that has everything to do with it.
Was listening to the Overdrive show and they were talking about if/when Matthews is headed to the Hall of Fame, footage from that game would probably be part of his highlight package and how it would be sad seeing that a memorable moment for Matthews happened in a minor league arena with around 4K fans only.
During the second intermission ofthe game, Justin Bourne joked about this game being a private ceremony for Matthews. LoL
This is so embarrassing for the NHL.
