Probably costs a 3rd for the hawks to take mcginn. No real need for more bottom 6 players.

The west is still pretty stacked. Not sure this group can jump 6 other teams to get in the playoffs. Three virtual rookies on the blue line?
Hawks pass. McGinn hasn't been a useful player since his days in Carolina. Ducks have plenty of cap space. Just buy him out.
And Stamkos isn't moving his family to LA for that contract.

If the Ducks Move On from Zegras
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TZ11</b></div><div>I think Ducks fans would be unhappy with any return tbh. No one wants to see Zegras traded, the Ducks are so much better with him on the ice as we've seen at the end of the season, even though the points didn't show it before these last 10 games or so. Although it's important to note that he was still battling the effects of an injury before he came back towards the end of the season. I just don't see there being a deal that fans of either team would like. On paper this is more than Zegras is worth but he's such an important part of the Ducks' roster and the returning pieces are probably once again pushing the timeline back. Anaheim wants to get out of the rebuild, this would probably extend it by a decent bit. I'm not saying this is an unfair deal towards the Ducks but the fans would probably be unhappy with any deal.</div></div>
Same injury that kept Logan Couture out basically all season!
I do agree we certainly don’t want to see Z gone but he does also make us better when he is on the ice like you said. When he is behind the goal line, you can sometimes see at least 3 heads turn to him to try and see what he isn’t doing since he can create plays in so many ways

Thank you for your honest responses. Both Andy_Dick & TZ11. Appreciate the candidness and the intellectual stimulation. (Many emotion-driven fans on this site, which isn't bad lol, but really glad to see two very logically argued reasonings to understand what's going on both sides.) Thank you.

Anaheim Ducks signed Troy Terry (7 Years / $7,000,000 AAV)
<div class="tweet"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Troy Terry is so fun to watch. Unbelievably nifty with the puck. </div>
Easily one of my fav players outside of the Leafs.
Bit of a down year last year but this contract should age just fine.
Over the last 2 seasons, Troy Terry leads the Ducks in:
Goals (60)
Points (128)
Even Strength Goals (47, leads by 14!)
Even Strength Points (101)
Game Winning Goals (10)
Shots (380)
Top 30 in EVG over that span, ahead of Crosby, Kreider, Stamkos, DeBrincat. Not bad.

The deal everyone was hoping for. Very team friendly, locked him up long term but not too long.
I'd have given him an extra million to round it up to 50, but hey, I guess the 142k each year was a deal killer :tearsofjoy

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>There is no way they expect him to play out this contract. He will be 34 at the start of the season. He went the College route, so he has less miles on his body than a player who came up in Canadian Junior and jumped right to pro, so I guess there is a possibility that he maintains his play a bit longer than a normal player, but I wouldn't bank on it.
If you see him as a big difference maker like Giroux in Ottawa, then I guess it is justifiable.</div></div>
For most 34 years olds I'd agree. But one of Killers biggest strengths is his ability to stay healthy and he's always in great shape

Imo the franchise cornerstone is Zegras and Fantalli</div></div>
Doesn't matter who they're drafting, McTavish is also a franchise cornerstone. A lot of GMs in the league would kill to have Zegras/Fantilli/McTavish/Terry/Drysdale. No way they trade any of those 5.

Toronto gave up the best player in this deal. If the response is Marner isn’t a playoff preformer neither was Tkachuk before he was traded.</div></div>
Marner is the best player now, sure. But McTavish is 19 and a franchise cornerstone. Why on earth would a rebuilding Anaheim team do this? The whole purpose of a rebuild is to build around young players like McTavish.

A decent UFA dman wont do much, rather than get you a decent asset or two. I cant see a Klingberg situation happening again with Anaheim, again, unless Anaheim decides to overpay. This I can’t really see happening.
Stecher and Hamonic aren’t good, but that’s kind of the point.</div></div>
The fanbase won't support being intentionally bad, and small market teams can't afford to tank like big markets can (Looking at you Toronto). We expected not to make the playoffs, but not be in the Bedard hunt at start of the season. Now that the mercenaries are gone, the team is starting to come together and is playing better hockey. Adding competent defensemen, allowing the kids time to develop, but overall doing better next year is the goal. We still finish bottom half of standings in 2024, but we need to set the stage to do better, not leave the guys we need to carry is in a loosing environment then decide to snap our fingers one day and suddenly they do well. There's a mental aspect of development we need to consider.

This is where we disagree. The Ducks don't need to try to be bad again, they need to take a small step forward and a competent defense would be that step.

This is a weaker UFA class, and I don’t know if the better dmen in the class are willing to go to a rebuilder, unless ANH decides to overpay.
Stecher and Hamonic can be flipped for mid-late assets by the TDL, clearing space to call up Zellweger and Mitts.
</div></div>
We'll see how the cap space shakes out. Guys go where they can get paid to a certain extent (eg Klingberg). At a minimum I think they'd resign Shattenkirk over a guy like Stecher.
There are also more than a few options in trade if Verbeek is willing to part with a pick and or prospect. Boston in particular is HARD up against the cap. The Rangers. The Oilers. I really don't think the Ducks will have to settle for scraps as bad as Stecher and Hamonic.
EDIT - Been there done that with Lettieri. There's no reason to go back him, he's nothing but a marginal AHL/NHL bubble guy that gets in the way of a younger guy like Leason.

I think you are a bit rich on Z and T's contracts, looks about right otherwise. I imagine perrault stays down until Henrique is moved, and then Fantilli makes the roster next year once Silfverberg is gone.
I think we are much more aggressive buyers of defensemen in FA.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Trade UP to take Reinbacher? Wouldn't that be trading down to ~10th?
Yeah, there's not a ton of RHD available, but if Verbeek can get a guy like Mayfield to come be Fowlers partner, even maybe Dumba (not the greatest defensively, but throws huge hits and is one mean customer, great in the room, really pumps the guys up, wouldn't be a bad signing). Helleson would be good, but I think giving him 1 more year to marinate in the AHL would be beneficial before calling him up to 3RD.
100% agree, give me Graves and Mayfield. Consolation prize is pick up Reilly from Boston a-la Kulikov deal, and sign Dumba to a reasonable 3-4 year deal. I'm really struggling to think what defensive RHD would be available from a team for trade, maybe we can get Hakanpaa back from Dallas, but he is signed cheap, hard to think he will be a cap casualty. Connor Murphy maybe? Ristolainen's contract fits, but is Risto the answer? Maybe Cody Ceci from Edmonton? 2-4 years would be ideal for term left if we pick someone up.</div></div>
I would kick the Tires on Severnson (NJD) but your right RD and goalie market is very weak this year. Honestly there isn’t a deep or strong position in FA period this year.

We're gonna stiff the third overall draft pick out of 100 grand a season? Sheesh.
The rest of it looks okay -- I have differences of opinion about some of the lines, but who cares about that right now? -- for what it is: a developing plan for Draft Day Plus One. I like everyone's suggestions (including yours, in the Team Description, which some may have overlooked) about some free agent actual-defender defenseman/men. Count me on board.
