A Neutral View on a Potential Eichel Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SuprDave45</b></div><div>I am by no means saying this is fair value, I agree it isn't.
But...a lot of people keep making the mistake of measuring Eichel's value like he isn't broken and demanding off the crazy train...
The longer Buffalo keeps demanding full value, the longer this is going to drag on and the lower his value will be. If I were the Rangers, I'd put out a statement that they've moved on. Most of the other suitors have already filled their needs elsewhere.
If they allow camps to open, or even worse the season starts? $h!t show!</div></div>
I understand where you are coming from. But Eichel is under contract for 5 years.
It is better to keep him then help a contender win a championship to get pennies on the dollar in return.
If teams don't wanna pony up that's fine. But Buffalo can just hold onto Eichel until his contract runs out

Artemi Panarin would turn a pure scorer like Hertl into a 40-goal scorer, matching these skill sets. At the same time, Strome would make a 30-goal scorer like Meier into a 40-goal scorer. Both Panarin and Strome have similar ice vision and passing ability. Hertl and Meier are nearly similar netfront scorers.
That's the styles these two teams can best incorporate, by making such a move.
Since the Sharks are also goaltending-deficient, adding Georgiev settles this need completely.

This absolutely does not fit SJ's needs.
- They don't need anymore goaltenders, they have 2 NHL goalies and no need for a 3rd okayish one.
- This does little to address futures, Zach Jones isn't special, and there are no picks.
- Strome serves little purpose for SJ, and they aren't going to trade a 1C for him just to be a future trade piece, that's just reckless and dumb.
I can tell you don't understand anything about SJ if you think Marcus Sorensen, a player who probably isn't going to be in North America next season, is going to be on SJ's top 6.

A one-for-one Strome/Hertl deal honestly works. The need for a playmaking center with leadership skills is the Sharks, while a big shooting power forward is the need of the Rangers.
Each player satisfies the other team's need, without destroying the total roster makeup. The Rangers might be inclined to move Zach Jones in this deal to offer him a long-term NHL opportunity, rather than bury him for years (potentially) in Hartford of the AHL.
That said, including Julian Gauthier isn't necessary; utilizing him in the Ranger roster brings a balance to it.</div></div>
omg lol. Hertl is 2x the player Strome is and it ain't close.

Rangers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SuprDave45</b></div><div>^ This..
Can't really put it any better.
If anything, DeAngelo is a more realistic target, he's gotta move for Nils anyway...that we can discuss. Just not for Honka, don't have any real need for a smallish RD with mediocre upside. How about a better C prospect, got any of those?
DeAngelo
Georgiev
for
Ryan Suzuki
Toronto's 1st
With Aho, Trocheck, Staal and Necas all on the current roster, you have less need at C than say the Rangers...who have no need at RD.
In return, you get a 60+ point 25 year old RD entering his prime and under RFA control for the next 3 seasons, and Georgiev.</div></div>
Reason why Deangelo wouldnt work is because we cant afford. DeAngelo would be paid 5+ mil to play on the 3rd pairing. Also we would then have to leave him unprotected in the expansion draft.
With Nils in the trade (although not realistic) it allows us to have him in the lineup on a Entry contract!

Rangers
Rangers fans generally agree that Nils is pretty much untouchable right now; that changes if DeAngelo is signed long term, but for now, Nils is basically our successor for that spot in the lineup, and having his ELC will be really helpful for the Rangers. I don't know that much about Honka as a prospect but just based on his age I would assume he's probably 2ish years away from the NHL in a best case scenario, and that doesn't really fit the Rangers' timeline. They're not really doing the whole "full rebuild, sell everything" thing anymore. Yeah we traded you Skjei for a 1st, but that was largely motivated by the fact Skjei had a NTC of some kind kicking in and we wanted to get rid of him before it did, similarly to Stepan back in 2017. I think the Rangers would be a bit more interested in some things that are a little more current, that are maybe a year if that from graduating to the NHL. I don't think they'd want to trade their futures for more futures, I think if they're going to sell futures, they'd rather be turning them into something different, probably current assets.
It's not a horrible idea, I think Georgiev to Carolina makes a lot of sense and I think Nils is a good prospect for you to think about if you're not really a fan of Joey Keane, but I'm not sure the return would be something that intrigues the Rangers.

price to calgary
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SuprDave45</b></div><div>Based on?
Because in this trade offer I don't see anything about retained salary, which will continue to be the single biggest obstacle in the way of trading him. 10.5m for a goaltender in today's cap environment is just way too much. The cap hit of the last three Stanley Cup winning goaltenders <strong>COMBINED</strong> was...ironically...$10,500,000! Teams don't build around goalies anymore, they build around superstars and supporting role/depth players. In the goaltending department, they compromise performance with affordability..think bang for the buck.
You also need to consider, that the theoretical team trading for Price would be a contender who needs a goalie...where is a contending team getting 10.5m in free cap space for the next 7 seasons? Calgary sure doesn't have it!
The reality is that if a trade is to be made including Price, Montreal will need to eat money as well as take a perceived "loss" when we talk about Price's value as a player..simply because of his contract. So we can forget this idea of "you can get more" or "he's the best goalie", because that value isn't going to show up in any real life trade for him. They should certainly get some quality in return, but not the same quality as they would if Price's quality as a player were the only variable.
And all of this is with the given assumption that he doesn't get hurt yet again. Oh...and that he waives his full no movement clause to go to Calgary...
I enjoy watching him as a fan of the game, and he is truly a phenomenal goalie, but that's where it ends. I don't see Montreal ever moving this guy.</div></div>

TIME TO OVERREACT
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SuprDave45</b></div><div>Team toughness is a much better deterrent. And even more to the point, Haley shouldn't be thought of as an enforcer, hes a grit player who is willing to fight... at best. he isn't scaring anyone into not taking a run at Panarin or Kakko.
Take the last pre-season game for example..
The entire third period, the Islanders took run after run at Ranger players... on one shift, their fourth line took turns with cheap shots on Lemieux. Their reward for taking liberties? Their 3rd best fighter got the pleasure of kicking Haley's @$$.
The guy has heart, but if your going to employ the flawed enforcer theory...at least make it a legit enforcer. Glass was better than this!
For their part, the Rangers showed some spark and and didn't back down, but the reality is their a bunch of shrimps who aren't very good at taking the body and are even worse at fighting when necessary. I would anticipate the organization moving fast to bring on a better fighter if and when one becomes available..or overpaying for one if their young blue chippers start getting bounced around.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aspina25</b></div><div>Not a chance he plays 70 games. Lemieux is already in the "enforcer" role. As soon as Chytil or Kravtsov are ready, he's the first guy to get waived.</div></div>
In 17-18 Haley lead the NHL in fights with 22 (9 more than Tom Wilson). He fought 3 times just this preseason. He might be the last player in the NHL who's sole role (Brendan Lemieux has other elements to his game) is to fight and to fight often. I'm not suggesting he's the best at it but he has a clear role and he is willing to do it more than anyone else and the entire league knows it. If he's on the roster he's in the lineup because of that trait.

Just having a little Trade Deadline fun
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SuprDave45</b></div><div>Yeah, I mean granted it might seem like a bit of a stretch to ask for Liljigren, Toronto could easily say he's "untouchable". But really, if you dissect each of the pieces being moved and put them into individual deals...the sum return has to be pretty high. The potential 1st rd pick alone could come close to a player on par (Liljigren was a 17th overall pick). It's not to say they wouldn't say no, just saying it isn't some outlandish offer. I would love to hear from some Leaf fans here.
I think Spooner's a better player than all the nonsense you hear out of Boston, he'd fit right in with Buffalo imo.</div></div>
Liljegren also fell quite a bit in his draft year. He was top 5 i think before getting injured or sick or something. I can't remember exactly.

Five stars, nice job. If a person first thinks a deal favors one team then reexams the trade and switches maybe it is a close trade. But just an observation. On the other hand since Spooner should be a Sabre if DATM had pulled the trigger, I would think Betterall would do that trade.
Let's make deal :cheers

Just having a little Trade Deadline fun
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SuprDave45</b></div><div>You're leaving out the deadline aspect of making the deal in the first place. Teams pay a steep price for rentals in the hope of winning a cup, which is Toronto's presumed motivation in the first place. This deal not only offers the rental = cup aspect, it also gives future pieces in DeAngelo and the 2nd/1st, so they get kind of a "cake and eat it too" deal. They also have Smith's services for 2 more seasons. I am not saying there isn't wiggle room to make the deal right, for sure....but it's in the ballpark.</div></div>
I see what you are saying and agree that the TDL aspect raising the stakes. My thinking though is TOR is really high on Liljegren and while Zucc may be the best player on the NYR roster I don't think his value, even with a 2nd (potential first) is high enough for TOR to part with one of their top D prospects at a time when they need D.
I also would love for Smith to have a bounce back season but his value right now is 0 if not in the negative.

It's nice to dream, but with the current state of Montreal combined with how poor a job Dallas would have to do to lose him...I just can't see Seguin going to the Canadiens. Just from an outsider's perspective let me ask, when does it become time for Montreal to rip the band aid off and start selling? I can't help but feel you're a pulled Carey Price hamstring away from another bad season. Reminds me a lot of the Rangers banking on Hank to somehow single-handedly win them a cup every year.
Speaking of the Rangers, Manhattan is about the same distance away from Seguin's hometown as Montreal is...they could try to...
Yeah no, just kidding! LOL</div></div>
I could see Seguin going somewhere else, I don't think anyone can really say that the Stars are serious contender. They missed the playoffs the past 2 years and I don't see much improvement from them this season. They have a solid 1st line and very little depth. So maybe Seguin sees no cup runs in Dallas and wants to test the market. That being said, there are far better opportunities to join actual contending teams and give himself a real shot at winning the cup. No Montreal, Edmonton and Calgary are not real contenders. At least not for a few years.
