Stamkos may re-sign if he takes a very team friendly deal. If not, oh well. He also hasn't been primarily a C for awhile, so as I said, Tampa doesn't need to trade for Dowd at a ridiculous price. Tampa has Point, Cirelli, Paul, Glendening, as well as a couple of promising centers that are close to getting promoted. Dowd for a.1st is a terrible overpay for most teams, and especially Tampa.

Lightning offseason
Too much for Stamkos. Tampa needs a legit top 4 dman to add. If Hanifin makes it to ufa, he'll be a member of the team on July 1. Stamkos may walk, but at thus point, Hanifin would have more value than Stamkos moving forward imo.

Tampa doesn't need a C, and likely won't next deadline either. They could very well move the '26 1st(and may have already done so if Calgary had taken their offer for Hanifin), but I don’t see it for Dowd.

Tampa declines. They reportedly looked into Dowd and thought the price was much too high(as did apparently any other team that inquired on him).

I think it's also possible that both Sheary and Jeannot are moved as well , in addition to Hanifin taking 500-750k less, in order to see about keeping Stamkos. Many on here seem to just assume Hanifin is just a lock to re-sign with Vegas, but that's far from any guarantee. Even if he does, there will be plenty of quality top 4 dmen more than likely hitting free agency this summer, and Tampa will likely be adding one.

Lightning 2023/24 Season Thread
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>lightning_mcqueen</b></div><div>Not sure what to think anymore to be completely honest. Bolts had a perfect opportunity to rebound in the second half of the season and we didn't take it. At this point, the quantity of losses and the quality of play is a little embarrassing, and I'm not sure how to react. This is a strong organisation, but it feels as if we've got no solutions and have given up. Furthermore, the Duclair trade was a rather bad move in my opinion. With the wildcard race tightening up, and the Bolts seemingly still faltering, I wonder about the future of the season and seasons to come. Any thoughts?</div></div>
It's been a rough season from many, but the core is still young enough and talented enough to be contenders for several years to come. The Duclair trade was fine imo if JBB is planning on re-signing him. They very much needed(and still need at least another) reliable middle 6 scoring threat. I am.more frustrated by not paying the assets needed to seal the deal on Hanifin, as for what he ultimately went for, Tampa could've definitely made the trade work. The fact that there was reportedly an extension in place with Tampa made JBB's.unwillingness.to once not pony up the futures needed very frustrating. He's taking a very large gamble that Hanifin will only sign with Tampa, as if he extends.with Vegas or someone else then it's a massive failure for him
Moving forward past this season, they need to add a good dman(whether that's Hanifin, or another potential ufa to be such as Walker, Pesce, Skjei, etc), they need to have that strong top 4 again. A change in defensive structure would also help imo(as would relieving the assistant who implemented it). Even with a change in system, though, many of the higher paid players,.at all positions.must get back to the levels seen from them during the deep playoff runs. Finally, if Vasy can't start consistently playing like the G that was given a 9.5 aav, it won't matter much how well the defense improves.
I think in terms of the F unit, Stamkos either takes a very team friendly deal, or he can walk. His play has noticeably declined this year, and he seems to now be a 3rd line pp specialist. 4-5 million aav tops, as they simply can't sink much needed cap space into a bloated retirement contract for him. I think Duclair will also be re-signed on an affordable short term deal, and the team can create 2-2.5 million more by moving Sheary and Jeannot while replacing them with a combination of lower cap hit ufa's and/or Syracuse promotions. Use the extra available space to sign one additional middle/bottom 6 F, or, if Stamkos is let go, use 4-5 million on one higher end middle 6 forward with top 6 upside, or 2 solid middle 6 contributors. A little bit of a retool would be good, and as much as Stamkos has been the face of the franchise for a long time, you can't sacrifice opportunities during this window to accommodate any one player(especially an older vet who is, unfortunately, showing signs of decline, especially 5v5).

(SJS/TBL) - Duclair, 2025 7th (SJS) for Thompson, 2024 3rd (TBL)
It was a good trade for both sides. Duclair is also more than likely not a rental given he was a player JBB and Co. were interested in for a while. He provides much needed forward depth in the middle 6. Thompson didn't crack the lineup when a spot was there for the taking given Perbix's play at times this year. He has some potential though, and is likely a solid 3rd pairing guy if he hits his ceiling. He'll likely get a good shot with S.J.,.who did well with no retention and a 3rd in addition.

Not even close. Most of the players on that list aren't close to Duclair, and most of the one's that ate close or maybe better are on teams that aren't selling or would extract an even higher premium. In the end, as I said earlier, Thompson wasn't going to be a top 4 in Tampa, and with Crozier playing well and magbe a move for someone like Carrier or Fabbro from Nashville,.not to mention any possible ufa's over the summer, Thompson was an expendable trade piece. JBB isn't getting fired and improved the team in one area that needed it, and hopefully, tomorrow, he'll address another.

Chaffee, merela, fleury, myers, koepke, and a few others were okay but had no where near the talent of goncalves, thompson, lilleberg, groshev, crozier and finley. Only time will tell but my guess is he plays top 4 for SJ to start next year and works into a top pairing beating out calen addison and has a 40 point season, he doesnt really have a lot of competition there. Duclair is fine, I dont think he should be resigned I think money could be reallocated better but it just pisses me off we gave him away when we didnt have to, duke should have cost a 3rd at most</div></div>
Maybe he does in S.J. because their right side is weak. Duclair had no trade protection and more than jjst Tampa was interested. He was always likely to get more of a 3rd. Although Tampa did overpay a little, if it's a player JBB sees as a piece beyond this year, a little extra was required to get the player.

It was an unnecessary overpay, duke should have gotten a 3rd max especially with no retention. I dont have as much a problem with getting duke as much as I have by how much we overpayed for him especially since this is a buyers market right now, how are we the only buying team that got fleeced?</div></div>
Key word, "potential". He may end up better than either, but he couldn't beat out any of the guys ahead of him for a spot. He probabaly has a future in the NHLas a solid 3rd pairing guy, but he was never going to be a top 4 in Tampa while this group was contending. Duclair, especially when he likely gets re-signed, provides a big need now. Thompson was one of the 2 or 3 most likely moved prospects before tomorrow, so it is what it is.

The trade is fine. I'm guessing Duclair is getting re-signed, and tbe team needed middle 6 depth far more than a decent, but not game breaking D prospect that likely tops out as a #5. The emergence of Crozier in addition to Cernak,Raddysh,Perbix, and with Schmidt coming up fast as well, left Thompson expendable. I would've rather moved him in a Hanifin trade, but this was a good add for Tampa at a position of need.

If Tampa could somehow get Chychrun half retained, then it might be worth exploring. I do think it would cost the team potentially more than what is in the above trade though, so it may be prohibitive. It would be quite something though to get Chych and then sign Hanifin or Walker as a ufa. A d-corp looking like
Hedman-Walker
Sergachev-Cernak
Chychrun-Raddysh/Perbix/Thompson
Or
Hedman-Raddysh
Hanifin-Serg
Chychrun-Cernak
Either would be quite formidable.

Hard to believe that Tampa couldn't or wouldn't have put together a better offer than this. Almost every single Tampa offer on here was better than what they ended up getting. I wish Brisebois had offered the '26 1st, one if Gauthier/Thompson, Perbix and a 3rd or 4th, as Hanifin would be a Bolt now imo.

Tampa can also keep both Stamkos and Hanifin next year, as the only way Stamkos should be re-signed is if he signs for something in the 5 aav range. If he wants something larger, he can get it elsewhere imo while Tampa uses that space to look at other ufa F options.

As long as Hanifin is getting extended for sure, then I would likely do this trade. Hanifin improves the blueline tremendously, and it keeps him out of potentially two of Tampa's biggest rivals for the foreseeable future. Some Tampa fans are assuming the team can just sign him over the summer, but there are other teams he will sign with. It's a very large gamble for Tampa to take, and a poor one imo vs moving a '26 1st and a prospect.
