Yeah I wouldn't trade McDavid or Kucherov for any player in the league one for one. Best two players in the league in my opinion.

It's 3 and 8, but people beat up Gardiner as if it's his job to be a defensive defenseman. That's just not who he is. He's slightly below average defensively and way above average offensively. Karlsson struggles defensively at times. So does Ristolainen. And Klingberg. And Krug. You get the point. Nobody is super upset with them because they aren't on the Leafs. Hainsey, on the other hand, is only an average third pairing guy. He needs to go or be replaced. People say Hainsey and Gardiner are giveaway machines. Yet Reilly gives away more pucks then they do. He also allows far more GA/60 than any other D except for Dermott, the other most highly touted Leaf D. Basically, I think fans degrade Gardiner too much without realizing that Reilly is playing in his role now and he's being used in a way that he's never been used in before. He'd be a beast on a team like Vancouver and Montreal who have an abundance of D to grind out the hard minutes for him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goulet</b></div><div>I think this was done with a strong hint of sarcasm. Only delusional Leaf fans think Marner can walk on water.</div></div>
Speaking of "can walk on water". A few evenings ago, went for walk down the marina and harbour on Georgian Bay. It was dusk, quite lovely, Noticed the water was somewhat ice covered by there was some open water.
On the far side of the harbour there was fellow walking on bay. I watched him for about 12 minutes as he pushing some kinda sled. I was prepared to call 911 as concerned that he would hit a soft spot in the ice, and fall through. Every year some dies falling through the ice as they take the short cut going from one side of the bay to the other, and usually at this time of the year when the ice isn't solid. But he made it to shore, all it well.
After reading your comment, I now know why the fellow didn't fall through ice/water. It must have been Mitch Marner because he can walk on water as many Leafs fans suggest.:)

Kucherov and Rantanen can only be mentioned with beer goggles on.
Term is a big factor as well as quality of linemate. Marner struggled last year with Bozak and JVR, as did Matthews with Hyman and Brown. They are fortunate to be put in positions this year that really max their production and many forget that. It's easy to look at the numbers and expect them to swing for the fence but the question has to be asked if they could replicate their successes elsewhere?</div></div>
Bingo! And despite the jokes re dumb jocks, hockey players aren't stupid.. they know when they're being set up for success and when they're not. As much as players want to get paid, they equally want to realize their potential. And in a team sport like hockey one needs good teammates to realize that. Hockey players know this, and it would take alot for me to believe they don't take that into consideration when contemplating their contracts. Jt coming to Toronto confirms this for me

Lets toy with Nylander getting his money
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sidstick87</b></div><div>- Matthews is going to want at the very least, the same as McJesus - $12.5-$13.5
- Marner > JT = MORE MONEY $11-$12

You have got to be trolling right now. Players dont just get a blank cheque. Matthews will be pushed to take about 11 mil (which is plenty for a now somewhat injury prone player), Marner is in the exact stat categories as Gaudreau was when he signed his deal at 6.75 which is inflated to about 7.5 right now. Also on Marner theres no way on earth he is getting more than Draisaitl. Plus Kapanen has absolutely negative leverage and will take what he is given or he will be traded.
I have no clue if it is the young generation of hockey fans or if it is just the whole fans in general but the way people just over look facts these days is mind blowing. To me just because Marner is playing with Tavares who is obviously going to inflate his stats a big does not get him reason to ask for more money. These are RRRRRR-FFFFF-AAAAAA players and are not at the point in their careers where they can leverage the max amount of money. Its just called business

Buffalo fans, Bills make the playoff, and they trade for Skinner, and now they think know the value of other teams players.
MTL127 posted a Dallas/Panarin trade 10 hours ago, trading a lot less to obtain Panarin. It was evaluated by neutral fans that Dallas was giving up way too much. By comparison this Panarin trade is a vast overpayment by the Leafs, but of course it isn't being elevated by neutral fans.

Nylander with bridge, Perf Bonuses paid
The biggest bridge deal ever signed was Kucherov 3 years at 4.766M$ per, less than 2 years ago. Kucherov then > Nylander now. So I could see Nylander getting bridged, but for 3 years (100% sure) and for nothing more than 4.766M$ per (which would be a little less than Kucherov, in cap hit %). That would be the best bridge deal he could/should ever get, unless Dubas is an idiot, which I absolutely don't think he is.

<strong>Johnsson has played 15 NHL games and has 5 total points in the NHL.</strong>
How in gods green earth does that get him $3,500,000+ ? That gets him $925,000 at BEST....unless Dubas wants to lock him for 3-4 years (which then costs $1,000,000 - $1,500,000).

YOU HAVE TO TRADE NYLANDER!!!
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>You don't know anything about hockey. Pittsburgh won the cup with Justin Schultz as their stud defender. The Leafs Defence is a lot better than what Pittsburgh had that year. Letang was hurt and didn't play a game. You don't need a stud defender if you have enough depth to roll 4 lines of power. TO is faster than they were last year. Deeper than they were last year, more experienced than they were last year. Reilly will be this stud defender you say they need. He's as good as Ellis, maybe not as good defensively (although it would be interesting to see how he'd play with a better partner than Hainsey) but he's better offensively.
To get a stud defender, the cost is more than what they'll contribute. Watch whoever gets Karlsson will be hurt by the trade. They'll sap much of their depth and if an injury hits, they'll be devastated.</div></div>
If losing 1 roster player devastates:tearsofjoy your roster than you have some major issues. And just because Morgan Reilly becomes elite in NHL 18, doesn't mean he will in real life. He is good offensively and not good defensively.

What the Kucherov deal means for the Leafs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>Matthews is a centre and a generational talent. He may score 50+ goals this year. He's getting 11.5 next year. Marner will now likely get closer to 9 million than he would have but Nylander is definitely over 6 million. Inflation and the Elhers signing will push his average up slightly past 6 million. Add whatever it takes to get him to 8 years and you're golden. The best part of giving 8 year deals to these kids is the core will be locked up for the next 7 years at a fixed rate. It makes it very easy to plan other contracts out since we know how long we have without star contract fluctuations.</div></div>
There's absolutely no reason for Matthews to get more than what Jack Eichel got last year. 8 years at 10M$ AAV is extremely fair and exactly what he should get. Drop that generationnal talent BS, this is reserved for Crosby and McJesus. Matthews isn't even close to these guys and will never be. He's a superstar, 100%, but nothing more.

I have no doubt Matthews will outscore Tavares this season, but it's not just about goals. It's about experience, leadership, some of those more intangible qualities that cannot be measured, or are harder to measure than goals. You through in this Kucherov signing (and yes, I realize TB has no income tax), who, at present, is a more elite offensive player than Matthews, and I think Matthews falls at $10 million. Now, that is my outlook if they are trying to get an extension signed over this summer. I am sure things will change if the extension is signed next season/offseason.

Leafs dont care about Karlsson
No deal from Toronto. Dermott is a top4 defenseman in his own right, so we aren't fixing much back there, and for that small upgrade we give up a 30 goal scoring matchup center on a steal of a deal. Just doesn't make sense.

Rielly fooooorrrr
Gardiner's xGA/60 was better than Reilly's, even on the road, where their usages were similar. Babcock's playing Reilly against other team's top lines because his usage philosophy is idiotic. In almost all areas, Gardiner and Reilly are comparable with Gardiner as slightly better. Gardiner's defense looks worse than it is because of his high-risk high-reward style in transition, but that style actually suppresses GA and xGA by preventing the Leafs from getting pinned in their own zone.
This high-risk style is also why people chastise him for not making simple plays: the simple, safe play is often the one that is less effective in transition and doesn't often lead to fast breakouts and rush chances.
