Definite no from Oilers POV

The oilers don’t benefit from this trade at all.

Matthews has cracked 70 points once. McDavid is on pace for 125. We get a middle six center, and then a bunch of spare bits. Our roster looks far worse.
Ha, and you said I'm biased because my username is HailMcJesus? You made this trade, for god's sake. You're the biased one.

Is this a joke? Connor McDavid is miles ahead of Auston Matthews right now.

Good thing you retained $134K of Matthews salary, otherwise this would have been a no-go for sure.

I love it from a Leafs perspective. Get rid of Kadri and Brown, and for all the hype surrounding Matthews, that kid has a long way to go.

Looks like Chiarelli trade...

Over exaggerating to fit your bs narrative. Hold this L bud.
I think you guys need to actually look at (comparable) stats before you scream .....
McDavid plays 4.5 minutes per night more than Matthews + he gets 1 extra minute of PP time.
Him and Drai play more than any other forwards in the league (forward depth issues?)
Below are "all situation" production stats (I didn't include even-strength or primary-point stats ... but they do make Matthews look better than these one):
2018-19 SEASON
Points Per 60 Minutes | McDavid =
3.951 =
3rd in the NHL
Points Per 60 Minutes | Matthews =
3.531 =
10th in the NHL
Goals Per 60 Minutes | Matthews =
1.815 =
3rd in the NHL
Goals Per 60 Minutes | McDavid =
1.408 =
27th in the NHL
2017-18 SEASON
Points Per 60 Minutes | McDavid =
3.669 =
6th in the NHL
Points Per 60 Minutes | Matthews =
3.363 =
10th in the NHL
Goals Per 60 Minutes | Matthews =
1.815 =
2nd in the NHL
Goals Per 60 Minutes | N. Kadri =
1.432 =
19th in the NHL
(bonus)
Goals Per 60 Minutes | McDavid =
1.393 =
26th in the NHL
2016-17 SEASON
Points Per 60 Minutes | McDavid =
3.464 =
5th in the NHL
Points Per 60 Minutes | Matthews =
2.866 =
15th in the NHL
(rookie)
Goals Per 60 Minutes | Matthews =
1.661 =
4th in the NHL
(rookie)
Goals Per 60 Minutes | N.Kadri =
1.413 =
18th in the NHL
(bonus)
Goals Per 60 Minutes | McDavid =
1.039 =
77th in the NHL
Goals Per 60 Minutes | C.Brown =
0.902 =
106th in the NHL
(bonus + rookie)
So when we look purely at overall point production as everyone is suggesting .... they're quite evenly matched.
- Matthews scores more and McDavid gets more points.
- I think points are more important than goals (check for McDavid)
- But the scoring gap has been wider than the point gap over 3 years (check for Matthews)
- Kadri has also scored at a higher rate than McDavid over the past 3 seasons.
With that in mind:
1. Matthews
even strength production looks better than this (when compared to McDavid).
2. Matthews
primary point production looks better than this (when compared to McDavid).
3. Matthews
advanced defensive stats look better than this (when compared to McDavid).
4. Over the past 3 seasons
Kadri has out produced every Oiler except McDavid + Draisaitl (with 3 more years at 4.5M).
5. Over the past 3 seasons
Brown has out produced every Oiler except McDavid + Draisaitl + RNH (for 2.1M + RFA expiry).
6. Matthews + Kadri + Brown would have all been among the Oilers best defensive forwards during this period.
So ya ... this trade should make the Oilers better right now and in the future (Matthews is younger than McDavid and there are added futures).
And it's fair to state that points don't grow linearly with ice-time .... but they'll clearly jump with an extra minute of PP time and 25% more TOI.
FINAL NOTE: Kadri is not "crap" .... he's as good as RNH (I watch both). Babcock shoved him into a shut-down role and he does it well.
