Oh I guess I meant both but yes, it would be pure speculation on my part, but I do wonder if Verbeek sees a hotshot brash kid and thinks he’s not a team identity fit.

Markstrom is honestly one of the worst options out there due to age and contract.</div></div>
I like Gustavsson. Yup a 2025 first this offseason is a really valuable asset. I like when contenders use their first round pick in the offseason rather than at the deadline. You get a way better player for longer that way.

Similar to Killorn, players like this get really nice contracts from rebuilding teams. But I don’t try to nail contracts when I’m just trying to get a feel for depth charts like this team.
I think they should try to develop Zegras into what looks like a perfect fit on that second line. If they trade him they immediately start looking for his skill set the next day.

This is the big assumption that pretty much every Canadian media source has made as to why he’s in the rumour mill. The idea that his game doesn’t fit with the team Verbeek is trying to build. That’s what I mean by cultural fit.
Assuming this is not a figment of my imagination, are you saying you haven’t seen any of this speculation?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NJDevils1317</b></div><div>The problem with the 10th overall pick is, there is no goalie I deem worth that in a deal outside of Askarov, but I imagine NSH is moving on from Saros to move to Askarov. The issue with solid goalies like Ullmark and Saros are neither can be extended before the draft, so with no guarantees, I can't in good consciousness move that pick without a guarantee. Any talk of "well they can talk about a deal before" means nothing as there is no legal recourse to an agent pulling out of a verbal agreement.</div></div>
If the 10th OA asset is just too valuable, which is fair, you just risk not getting a goalie before the next season starts. I like the gamble; ignore the 24 draft as a deadline, make your pick, and then start talking to the teams with goalies to trade.
It’s the kind of risk that puts the GM’s job at stake though, if a trade doesn’t come together, and you enter the season without a strong goaltending duo on paper, that’s the end of your job if you don’t ascend to the contender status that NJD has/should have.

I’m pretty sure that the NJD GM agrees with you about there being other goalies out there. But I believe, when push comes to shove, the 24 first will be the asset moved by NJ. Could be a 25 first though.

Not great timing though for that strategy to work because the cap increases are probably outpacing the RFA cost increases. Teams more likely to keep their RFAs. .
Montréal hit a nice window of opportunity there and still didn’t come out of it all that much better (yet). But yeah I agree Arizona is going to hit a really nice window five years out when Simashev and Lamoroux are key players. And I think they start rising up as soon as next year depending on the offseason.

If I were Utah I would trade Lamoroux for Broberg. Much more certain upside. Way way safer floor. But I think EDM will settle for futures for Broberg in a cap dump type deal. Those kinds of teams won’t trade young assets. But if Broberg is going without a cap dump in mind I like the idea of a slightly younger (waiver ineligible) similar upside prospect.

But Reinhart 6 or 7 x $11 or something massive and Florida unwilling to pay him Tkachuk money. You never know.

Yeah I like using a winger to move up as a Flames fan and a team like WSH would also probably like something like this.
They have plenty of cap space. Mange might be sent no cap retained and it appears to work “ok”.
Anyways. Flames will have a lot of prospects going forward. So a move up to get a second higher-probability prospect this year makes sense to me.

His game has significantly developed during his time in Columbus and the effort he gives at both ends of the ice is hugely improved compared to where he was in 20-21 when he joined the team. The idea that he is slow is also provably false when looking at his Edge stats. The last two season he was in the 60-80 percentile of speed bursts of all categories while only playing 55 and 56 game seasons. With a full season those numbers only go up. He is a very fast player who appears slow due to his lankiness.</div></div>
This is very interesting. Thanks muchly! So would you say he’s increased his defensive IQ as well then? He’s not a liability in the D zone?

I wasn’t even recommending losing trades. Just for the record. The default assumption on the site is that the poster is trying to convey a realistic idea that they think is valid.
In this case I was trying to convey that the team could lose a lot of talent on paper (a lot!) and probably come out ahead if the Jackets started to slot players effectively.
Tks for posting!

Tks for all the responses. Not sure what to think of all the Chinakov love but I like the passion.

I’m not a Jackets fan.
I’m just frustrated from afar that they are trying to develop so many pieces that it results in those pieces not being able to develop.
Develop KJ. You’ve got Gaudreau. That’s plenty of left shot top six wingers. I’d much rather develop Sillinger on the third line and Chinakov is a bad fit there. I’m saying he’s expendable if Jackets management actually targets their teams talent for specific roles.

Yeah Tks for writing. I threw the Laine deal in there because it was interesting seeing that the Wild had some cap space for a “free winger” similar to the Bjorkstrand deal last summer.
Laine is a much better hold when you look at asset management from the perspective of him as a sole asset but honestly I think the value to the Jackets for all their other assets with addition by subtraction and finding a better top six asset than him (I would target Centre) is all around worth it for me.
And yeah, that kind of retention is bananas. But whereas the retention has its own value when you take a player’s cap hit below it’s fair market value, in Laine’a case it’s just retaining to try to get his cap hit down to what he’s worth today.
Hes a really bad player in today’s game. Way too slow. Way too disengaged. But man, that shot. If he could just back check and play positionally well enough to be a strong defender you could even live with his terrible up ice and back pressure but he can’t even defend the zone well. Painful.

Rumours of trades for offence - Necas Hutson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>exo2769</b></div><div>I'm going to disagree with with statement. And believe me, I'm a fan of the Holland MI native! I hope for his sake and MTL, he turns into a Quinn Hughes! The single EASIEST prospect to find these days is the undersized puck moving Dman. And that's BY FAR the easiest. Is he special amongst that group. I'm more agreeable with that...AND...is this situation in MTL perfect for his development. Yes absolutely. So maybe this is a technicality, but it's not easy to find Necas. It is easy to find an undersized puck moving dman. For his sake and MTL I hope he turns into a Quinn Hughes, but he could just as easily turn into a Ghost, Barrie, Erik Gustafsson.</div></div>
This is the thing that makes GMing in real life so so hard. The 10% chance that he’s Quinn Hughes is why you hold him. But then his first two to four years really hurt you either way. And the 80% chance he’s decent but a defensive liability is just too high a percentage to ignore. Especially with so much talent coming on that Montreal blue line. Logan Mailloux would be the kind of stud future QB that most fanbases would be drooling over. And he’s almost an after thought in the Habs’ team design.
I would be targeting Necas personally. But any big fast forward that is in the right age bracket that is cost controlled for years is a good enough piece to grab for Hutson IMO. This team is right there as a contender. So close. Such great pieces. I wouldn’t gamble on the 10% chance that Hutson is Quinn Hughes. I wouldn’t even do it if it’s a 49% chance.
If it’s a 75% chance like most Habs fans seem to expect than yeah, I’m way out to lunch!

Rumours of trades for offence - Necas Hutson
Great dialogue.
I’m not saying Wifi is the reason you trade Hutson but I am saying that building Stanley Cup contenders with small Dmen is very dicey.
Hutson’s age is not the problem obviously, it’s that a small dman developing sufficiently to not be a liability in the defensive zone is asking an enormous amount of him.
I just personally don’t think the juice is worth the squeeze with these stud QBs that anchor your third pair come playoff time. They are amazing AMAZING reg season pieces that are almost too painful to bear come playoff time.
I liked the responses that Necas just simply isn’t worth it. I like big fast forwards like Kempe and Necas. I get that his points don’t pop off the page. I think he could anchor a top six line as a centre much like Elias Lindholm was forced to do for the Flames.
Left Canes as a winger, similar career path.
If it’s not Necas, I just wonder out loud which centre with top six potential that plays a strong defensive game with speed is out there to dangle Hutson for? Maybe a team with cap constraints. Maybe a team desperate for a QB that is ok with the playoff liability. It’s a fun thought experiment.
If I can think of another besides Necas, I’ll post it.
Actually maybe Anton Lundell and Spencer Knight are an interesting package to target. That would be a blockbuster and a half. Gallagher or Anderson at half retained would sure look good down there as part of making the cap hits closer.

10-teamer NTC. So probably most of Canada and a few other spots (sometimes high tax, sometimes personal preference like NJ, etc etc). That leaves a lot of teams that would like Holl at 2 X $1.7M I figure.
I had assumed Yzerman was just going to further bury Holl and then possibly bury Petry. But the waivers status and Edvinsson making the team mean a move is more likely.
Here’s a longer list of teams I could see liking Holl at 2 x $1.7 w/o the Canadian teams and assuming roster holes this offseason:

And noway is Joe Velebo taking a 1 x $900,000 offer rumor has it that he'll get close to the Rasmussen deal probably 4 x $2,200,000.</div></div>
Tks - glad Veleno has turned a corner a bit this year. The fans wanted him out last offseason!
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Yeah, I think Roy is logical choice. Still have the cap and maybe don't have to Petry to make it work.</div></div>
I like Roy and watch him a bit but the slower dmen I always worry about term. He’s going to get six or seven years which is of course really risky.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pavelisgoat</b></div><div>I'd be satisfied with those deals but I do question if Seider has earned it this year. I know we put him in tough situations, but many games he just doesn't have the urgency he needs to play with, and gets himself out of position a lot thanks to Lalonees system.
As decent as Veleno was to start the season, I'd consider making him expendable as he may be one of the easier guys to clear off for both cap and roster spots reasons. Him and Fabbri. Both decent players but I think spots we need to improve internally on with likes of Kasper and Mazur/Sodes/Bergers.
Curious to see if Kane/Perron return and I'm guessing no chance on Sprong now that a good season turned into being a healthy down the stretch.
Ideally if we could retain half on Holl and dump him, we could consider an upgrade on D. But it's tricky with AlJo losing his waiver exempt status, we would still surely have to carry 8 D.</div></div>
This was the line of thinking that made me build out a roster and take a peak. I personally would target Pesce on something like 5 x $7.5M (high cap lower term)
And wanted to see if you need to move a dman to make the cap work.
You don’t really need to from a cap perspective but good point re: roster construction.
I don’t think it would be hard to find a home for Holl at half-retained. Calgary Vancouver and Seattle all come to mind immediately.
