Forcing people to support causes is bizarre. With all the other non-hockey causes the NHL has endorsed in the past, how many of them were screaming that not all NHL players supported them. There is only one cause that tries to make it all about them whether it is war, sports, education, religion,... Interesting to see that it is the one thing you focused on with an athelete being discussed on a sports hockey site

...then the Leafs won't win the Cup until after he retires. He's a great player but makes too much of the salary cap for the Leafs to add others. Matthews is a Franchise player and he also cripples the finances to build a contender in Toronto. You need at least 9 forwards and 4 dmen with a hot goalie to win. Leafs have 6, maybe 7, forwards, 1 dman and a half decent rookie backup learning. Somethings got to give. The Leafs current team chemistry can't survive 4 playoff series that could go 7 games each. The lack of depth puts too much weight on the stars and they wear out.
It all started when Dubas signed Tavares to an astronimical contract before the young players were ready.

Marner To Carolina
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kinger25</b></div><div>No im saying losing marner for two guys doesn’t make us any better</div></div>
Marner is making almost $11 MIL now which is basically what 2 ex-Leafs make combined in Hyman and McCann who are both on 40 goal paces again this season and both thought they were going to be Leafs. Hyman wanted to stay here badly on an 8 x $4.5-$5 MIL contract and retire a Leaf.
When Jones and other dmen were taking $9.5 MIL contracts, Rielly wanted to stay a Leaf and took $7.5 MIL x 8 years leaving up to $16 MIL on the table. THAT is wanting to play for the Leafs. NOT the contract Marner fought for.
If Marner leaves as a UFA we get all the cap space that he is going to fight for again to play for the Leafs because he wants to be here so badly. I suspect he is going to want $13 MIL + for 4-5 years to get one last payday before he retires. You can never get enough money for yourself in a TEAM based salary cap system if you are a Leaf star.
Look at Tampa Bay stars...and you can't say they took less because of taxes because playing around the league they still have almost 40% in income tax. Marner and Matthews didn't want to win a Cup, they want to only maximize their earnings while they are still able to play in the NHL.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ebmg</b></div><div>it mostly does. he has a cap hit of ~400k in the minors or something small like that. Wouldn’t be ideal but id rather than then have to watch his antics with horrible defensive play every night</div></div>
It's actually better than that...waived Reaves' cap hit is only $200,000 until 25-26. A buyout would cost us $450,000 against the cap until 27-28. Trading Reaves would cost assets which we need badly after the last few years of trading so many away. Best thing to do with Reaves I think is waive him like Simmonds and Clifford. Leafs have bottomless financial pockets for situations like this, Joffery Lupul, Stephane Robidas, etc.
William Lagesson, Noah Gregor, Max Lajoie can all be waived without ANY cap hit.
Klingberg, Bertuzzi, and Domi are a different story and Klingberg is especially a liability for the money. I hope this works out....Go Treliving Go!!

I see Joshua Brown as a tougher, bigger Bertuzzo, cheaper Gudbranson and cheaper, bigger and younger Luke Schenn. How much worse then those 6/7 dmen do you think he is? Or are you comparing Josh Brown to Cale Makar? Having a 6'5" 220+ lbs dman available for some of the tougher games would be nice depth. Not for a speedy, versatile bottom 6 roster player who plays with an edge and a prospect but a 4th RD pick would work.

We're going to miss him though. Although $2.75 MIL x 3 years is an overpay obviously. Having Jeannot, Maroon, Perry and all yelling at the Leafs bench and Schenn just leaning against the boards between the benchs was priceless.
Dubas investing draft picks and undrafted signings on players 5'10" and smaller was frustrating to say the least. Beefing up the forwards and defence is a must as well as seeing the current Leaf stars play with snot.

I really like Niederreiter but wish he was younger... but he would be good for 20 goals and 100+ hits. Too bad he is a UFA.
I really like Zadorov. Too bad he is a UFA.
I really LOVE Tippet. Would have to give up something of equal value to get him.
Leafs would have to retain as much as possible on Brodie and it still wouldn't fit for Vancouver's cap space. If I was the Leafs and Vancouver I would look at trading Robertson for Joshua. Robertson has MUCH better offensive upside but won't fit in the Leafs top 6 anymore and Joshua is the Leafs drafted player that was given away by Dubas for nothing but can play a 4th line role for the Leafs.
I really like Deslaurier but would pass because of his HUGE salary and with having Reaves now for 3 years. I would go for Comtois instead as MUCH less money.
Instead of Peake I would offer Liljegren for Schenn. :)
